To allwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL R. WEDLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in thecounty of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nasal Tampons; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description 'of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in nasal tampons.

The object of this invention is to-provide a device of the character indicated by means of which any desired remedy may be applied directly to' the inner surface of the nose or held in the nasal passages so that it may be inhaled and carried through the connectingpassages.

A further object of my invention is to render said device capable of being utilized as an air-strainer or dust-shield to prevent dust or other foreign matter being drawn through the nasal passages and taken into the lungs.

With these objects in view and to the end of attaining other advantages hereinafter appearing, this invention consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described in this specification, pointed out in the claims, and illus- 'trated in the accompanying drawings.

Referring to said drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a tampon embodying my invention. Fig. '2 is a sectional view of one of the pledgets on an enlarged scale and the retaining cup therefor. Fig. 3 is a section on line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. at is a perspective view showing one step in the manufacture of the device as will be more fully hereinafter explained.

Again referring to the drawings, 4 indicates the frame or connecting member of my device. This member consists of a length of fine Wire which is bent in the form of a yoke and preferably made flexible so that the spacing of the leg-portions 5 of the member can be adjusted to suit the thickness of the septum or dividing wall between the nostrils of the nose.

lint or anysimilar material. In forming a pledget a tuft of cotton or lint is prepared having a length equal to about twice the depth the pledget is to have-when com- 'pleted and the tuft is then folded'on itself before being placed in the cup.

In assembling my device I proceed as follows: The end of each leg 5 of the frame .4; is passed up through the opening 7 in the cup 6 which is to bemounted on the leg and the tuft which is to form the pledget at the center thereof and the leg is then drawn the end of the said leg is then looped around down in the cup, drawing the'folded portion of the tuft into the cup and seating it in the bottom thereof. The free end of the leg will then project through the opening in the bottom of the cup and the said projecting end is bent up on the outside of the cup, as shown at 9, after which the wire is pulled down so as to tighten theloop around the tuft. When the loop is tightened around the tuft the threads or filaments composing the tuft will conform to the shape of the cup which will cause the upper or outer ends or portions of the tuft to flare out so that the diameter of the pledget at its end is considerably larger than at its base. Therefore when the pledgets are inserted in the nostrils the outer portions thereof will snugly and resiliently engage the walls of the nostri s.

It will be readily seen that by my construction I am able to mount the tufts of lint or cotton or the like which form the pledgets so that they do retain their natural resiliency and are not compacted into a wad. Therefore when the tampon is inserted in the nose the pledgets form a perfect dustshield, but in no way interfere with easy respiration through the nostrils. Also by my construction it is possible to readily renew the pledgets from time to time as it may become necessary.

What I claim is 1. In a nasal tampon, the combination of a flexible U-shaped frame, a cup mounted on each leg of said frame and a pledget secured in each cup, the fibers of the pledgets flaring. upwardly and outwardly for the purpose set forth.

2. In a nasal tampon, the combination of a flexible U-shaped frame, a cup mounted on each leg of said frame and a pair of pledgets, each pledget consisting of a tuft folded at its center and detachably secured at the fold in one of'said cups.

3.
