Be it known that I, EDWIN T. GREEN- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, and
resident of Kiamesha, county of Sullivan, and State of New York, have made a new and useful Invention in Staple Blanks or Strips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is directed to an improvement upon a staple blank or strip disclosed in a prior patent granted to me on the 1st day of January, 1907 and bearing No. 839,836, in which patent I have described the manner of giving increased strength to strips of this nature by interconnecting the staples only at their lateral edges and backs, whereby the strip when made of relatively light metal will not tend to twist or bend so much as do staple blanks ordinarily of this nature and having only a single web back. I have ascertained in the extended use of this type of completed staple strips that if the strip be made of relatively light metal and provided'with a single web back, as is usual, there is great tendency for it to bend or twist, or both, when inserted in machines like those used for severing and driving staples. In fact to such an extent does this twisting or bending effect take place that the legs of the adjoining staples become often very much disturbed from their normal or parallel position so that in severing and driving the. staple to be acted upon by the plunger they are not driven straight downward as they should be,-but are often acted upon by the driving plunger in such manner as to drive the legs into the openings in the outlet from which the staple emerges, thereby choking the machine to such an extent as to temporarily put it out of commission. My invention disclosed in the before-mentioned patent overcomes this difficulty to a certain extent because of the stiffening effect between the angular parts of adjacent staples, but even these improved staples are open to-the same objection in a measure, although not as much so as are staples connected together by a single web or back located in the axial center of the strip. I
The present invention, therefore, has for its object, to provide a staple blank or strip which shall always maintain parallelism of the individual staples throughout and enone at a time, assuring always that the severed staple shall be driven downward in the direction that it should be driven and thus prevent any choking or disturbance of the machine.
My invention will be understood by referring to the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a staple blank or strip on an enlarged scale constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 represents the web or back of the staple strip which joins the staples together in one integral piece so that their backs 2 are parallel and their legs 3 are at right angles thereto and parallel with each other.
The novelty in this invention consists in giving to the web or back when the strip is stamped out of the meta, a corrugated or grooved form in the direction of its length so as to greatly increase the stiffness of said strip against'bending in any direction. This strip is stamped by a die in a manner well understood and said die, when it completes the operation, leaves the legs and back all stiffness that it. requires considerable effort on the part of one handling it to bend it as a whole. -When the strip, therefore, is fed into the machine in the well known manner every staple advances in absolute parallelism with its fellow and in the act of severing and driving each staple the user is assured that it will be severed and driven directly downward, thus avoiding any liability of choking or in any manner preventing the operation of the machine.
.I do not limit myself to the specific form of staple blank or strip disclosed in the accompanying drawings as obviously its form or shape may be departed from in many ways and still come within the scope of my claims hereinafter made, my invention contemplating broadly the maintaining of every part of the strip in absolute parallelism with such mechanical rigidity that ordinary handling of the strip will not tend to in any manner distort the shape thereof.
Although I prefer to use a strip with a single stiffening corrugated web 1 I do not limit myself to this form, but prefer it for the reason that it is :much easier to sever in the act of usingthe same than a strip having a double Web form like that shown in my before-mentioned patent.
Having thus described my invention What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. A staple blank or strip provided with a plurality of integrally connected staples and having a longitudinally corrugated Web or back, substantially as described.
2. A staple blank or strip-comprising a plurality of staples integrally connected together by a web or back having a downward corrugation in the direction of the legs of the staples, substantially as described.
3. A staple blank or strip comprising a plurality. of staples integrally connected together by a Web or back located in the axial center thereof and grooved or corrugated in the direction of the length of the legs, substantially as described.
a. A staple blank or strip comprising a plurality of staples integrally connected together by a Web or back of concave form, substantially as described.
