FLASH-LAMP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'rro R. TUCKER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new. and useful Improvements in F lash- Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a signal device, and has for its object a mechanism arranged to be detachably secured to the arm of a person,andameans for closing an electric circuit for illuminating a flash lam by astraight or outstretched motion of t 1e arm.
1,5 A further object of my inventionis to provide a flash lamp in proper connection with a battery, the same being arranged to be detachablyapplied on the wrist or fore-part of the arm of a person, and a means where- 2 by contact is made and the light flashed by an outstretched position of the arm.

The invention in detail consists of abattery housing 8 provided with a hinged bottom 9, and in the battery housing is a partition 10 in which is located a central con tact 11, with which communicates the flashlamp 12. In'this battery housing is located a battery 13 provided-with a' horizontal contact 14, and avertical contact 15, this battery being of the ordinary construction, and the horizontal contact 14 arranged of spring material so that its end will remain in cons'tant contact with a disk or plate 16 con nected to a post 17, which in turn. is in rigid connection with the center contact 11;
theseparts being insulated from the horizontal partition 10 by insulating material 5 0 18 (see Figs. and 6). The upper portion of the housing is pro vided with a bin ed cover 20, its forward end provided wit said cover in closed position, and the 'bottom 9 is likewise constructed, having a spring latch 22 which holds the battery in proper relation with' the contacts.

a latch 21 for holdin an opening 23 through which the vertical contact 15 projects, and'in theup er compartment of the battery casing, an conveniently located, is aspring contact 24, its end 25' riveted, or otherwise secured to. the casmg, while its free end 26 is arranged to be brought in contact with the vertical contact strip 15, and operation is imparted in order to bring the parts into communication, by a cord, or like device 27 attached to an ear or projection 28 formed on the sprin contact 24. The opposite end of the cord is provided with a clamp or fastening device 29,-
by which said cord is conveniently attached to the garment of the operator, and the end- 26 is only brought in communication with the contact strip 15 by the straightening or outstretching of the'arm as shown by dotted lines in Fig.- 2.
The device is held in position on the wrist' or forepart of the arm of the operator by the spring arms 30, and said spring armsare of such resiliency as to-fit over the wrist or forepart of the operators arm without in any way'discommodlng the movement of the arm. I do not desire to limit myself to this manner of fastening the apparatus to the arm. I may equip the device with a strap, or band which-can be adjusted on the arm,
or by 'meansof a pin, which can be passed through-the garment or coat sleeve, or other fastening mechanism, which I might .find
to be mostconvenient, comfortable and desirable. 4
The essential feature of my invention is to equip a'device to be used by chaufleurs, and to be conveniently placed on the wrist or fore-part ofthe arm, and by properly.
adjusting the cord, a contact is created and a flash light given as a signal to the driver of a following automobile, by-merely outstretching the arm, thus indicating to the following chaufieur that the party giving the signal either desires to stop, or turn to the right or left as is his intention; these signals of course are governed by rules laid down by ordinances governing automobile traflic. I
Another feature of the device is that the light is automatically flashed by the straightening of the arm, and gives the chauffeur ample light on the mechanical parts of the machine when it is necessary for him to work on the engine to repair any of the parts, and the light will remain in constant illumination as long as the arm is in approximately a straight position. Having fully described my invention, what- I claim is 4 Y 1.-A signal device comprising an elongated battery housing, a battery located therein, a flash-lamp located in said housing, a contact point located in the battery housing connecting'said battery-with the flash lamp, a spring contact located in the battery housing for completing a circuit and a flexible connectionwhe'reby the spring contact is operated for closing a circuit, and a clamping means located on the housing for supporting the device, substantially as specie A si'gnal device comprising a battery housing, a partition located therein, a batte'ry' located in thelower part of said hous- '30 ing, aflash-lamp supported in the upper part of saidliousing, a contact located on the partition and contacting with the flash-lamp and one pole of the battery, a spring contact located in the upper portion of the housing-and arranged to be brought in contact with the second polefof the battery, and a clamping means located on the housing by which the device is supported preferably on the forearm of a'person, substantially as ing',a' flashlamp located in the upper por tion of the housing and above the partition, a hinged bottom located on the under side ofjthe housing, a hinged top located on the upper end .of the housing, a contact located on thepartition communicating with the flash lamp and one pole of the battery, a
spring contact mounted in the upper portion of the housing and arranged to be brought vpole of the battery, a spring contact located in the upper portion of the housing and arranged to contact with the opposite pole of the battery, a hinged door located on the bottom of the housing, a hinged door located on the top of the housing, a clamping means whereby the housing is supported and a cord by which the spring cont-act is operated for completing a circuit for illuminating the lamp, substantially as specified.

A signal device comprising an elongated approximately rectangular casting; a partition located therein forming two compartments, a battery located in the lower compartment, a flash lamp supported in the upper compartment, spring arms radigting from the upper compartment; a contact supported on the partition with which one pole of the battery and flash lamp contacts, a
spring contact located in the upper compart-- ment and arranged to communicate with the opposite pole of the battery, and a cord con nected to the spring contact and passing through the upper compartment and designed to be attached to the arm of the user, by which contact is completed by the outstretching of the arm, and the flash lamp illuminated, substantially as specified.
