The present invention has numerous ac?- vantages over the protectors or coverings oi the prior art in that it is composed of in expensive material, may he very econon'iically made, is not bulky or cumbersome. re quires no attaching devices to secure it place on the hat, is very light and sightly, and is particularly efficient for the purposes intenclai.

liig'ure 1 shows a hat in eleva tinned on the heat? and with the pi ,..anj1le character prefer to employ 11 in the construction of the protector, I have found it advisable, in some instances to pro vide stays or reinforcing devices at those parts of the edges of the protector which are subjected to great strain. In Figs. 6 and 7 llhave shown stays g, at the junction of the flaps f with the body of the protector. I prefer to insert these stays interiorly of the protector, so that when the protector is on the hat, the stays will be protected from the weather.

From the foregoing description, it will be observed that the protector is simple in construction, easily and economically manufactured, that it can be expeditiously applied to the hat, and that it is, necessarily, particularly efficient in operation and yet avoids numerous disadvantages adherent in prior constructions.

-While the protector is more particularly adapted for use in rainy or stormy weather, yet it is of great utility as a protector to feathers and other delicate ornaments on a hat from wind and dust, such as are ordinarily encountered e. g. in automobiling.

The material from which the protector is made may, if desired, be semi-transparent, whereby the hat, showing .therethrough, will produce a pleasing; effect.

The device can be manufactured so cheaply as to enable it to be sold at a trifling cost, at news stands, hotels, railroad stations, etc, and its construction is such as to permit of its sale in the well-known vending machines.

\Vhile the inveriion has been particularly describedwith reference to its application to womens hats, and while this will naturally be its main field of use, it will be understood, of course, that the article, when slightly modified in proportions and shape, is capable of use on mens hats.

Having thus fully described the invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a protector for hats, having a body portion for enveloping. the hat, said body portion being of sufiicient extent that its edges may be folded over the brim and infolded within the crown of the hat, whereby said protector may be secured in place.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a protector for hats composed of semi-transparent water proof paper for enveloping a hat and having free edges foldable within the crown of the hat for securing said protector in place.

3. As a new article of manufacture a protector for hats composed of water proof paper adapted to envelop a hat and pro vided with means entering the crown of the hat, whereby it may be secured to the hat by the customary hat pins employed to hold the hat on the head.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a protector for hats composed of water proof material, having a body portion for incasing a hat, said body portion being-provided with extension flaps foldable within the crown of the hat, for securing said protector in place.
