To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonen G. VAOHON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l Veathcr-Strips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in weather strips and the object of this improvement is to provide a simple and effective means for sealing the joint between a window or door frame and masonry wall to which it is fitted.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a fragmental sectional View of a wall fitted with a window frame and provided with sealing means embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged section of the resilient member and the yieldable material used in the construction, and illustrating the means for securing the same.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprises a wall 3 to which a window frame 4 is fitted. The window frame 4 is provided with a staff-bead 5 secured in the usual manner. Said wall, window frame and staff-bead are of conventional design. In ordinary construction wind, dust and moisture pass through the joint between the wall and the window frame entering the room inclosed at a point indicated by the arrow 6 in Fig. 1. It is the purpose of my invention to provide a device which will prevent such passage.
The window frame and masonry after setting invariably separate enough to provide a space. I provide the resilient member 7 having a foot portion secured to the under side of the staff head 5 by means of screws 8, or their equivalent. The top edge of the resilient member 7 is rebent or curved Specification of Letters Patent.

to hold. the edge of the resilient material used to seal the joint between the staff head 5 and the wall. I prefer to use unt-anned lamb skin for this purpose, securing the skin 9 thereof in the rebent edge of the resilient member 7 with the wool side 10 engaging the masonry wall 3, the resiliency of the member 7 effectively maintaining the wool 10 in close engagement with the surface of the wall 8 thereof preventing the entrance of air or moisture. in Fig. 2, l have shown the resilient member 7 and wool 10 in relaxed position and in Fig. 1 in compressed position as used in the finished construc tion.
In applying my improvement the window or door frame is fitted in the wall in the usual manner and the staff bead 5 either temporarily secured to the window casing 4 or left off until after the masonry has been completed. When the wall has sufficiently set the resilient member 7 is secured to the staff bead 5, substantially as indicated in the drawings, and placed in position against the window frame 4: with the wool 10 engaging the wall 3 which effectively seals the joint.
l/Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1,
therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In combination with a wall and a window frame therein, of a staff-bead secured to said window frame adjacent said wall; a resilient member, ll.-shaped in cross section with one leg secured between said frame and staffbead and its other leg disposed between said staff-bead and said wall, the portion between the staff-bead and wall being provided with a tubular turned edge; and a yieldalole material between said Wall and resilient member and having its edge clamped in said turned edge, the latter being of a diameter equal to the thickness of said yieldable material under slight compression and adapted to protect the outer edge of said yieldable material, substantially as described.
