ZIMRA T. BEATTY, OF QUINCY, MICHIGAN.
BOX-LUCK.-
Application filed 0otober25, 1912.
Be it known that I,.-Z1M1ni BEATTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Quincy, in the countyiof Branch and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Locks; .and I do declare the following to be a fllllyOlGflI', and exact description of the invention, such as will. enable others skilled in the artto which :it appertains to make and .use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in looking catches for boxes and other receptacles.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, strongand efficient device of this character which will reliably lock a cover to a receptacle aifo-rdimgg' protection against accidentalopening-of the cover and capable of enabling the receptacle to which it is ap,
plied to be easily sealed.
.lVith this and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, and the combination .and arrangement ofparts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a :portion of a box with this improved lock applied, parts being broken out; Fig. 2 is a horizontalsection taken on the :line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken .on the line '3-3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a similar view taken on the line of F 1; Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a perspective view taken from the inner side of the latch member of the "lock; Fig. 7 is a similar view of the catch member.
In the embodiment illustrated A designates the body of the receptacle and B the cover. A. catch 3 is fixed to the inner face of the cover being preferably formed integral with an attaching plate 4 and extending at right angles from one end of said plate. for the passage of fastening elements and is provided with a slot 5 for a purpose to be described. The catch 3 is formed with a beveled nose 6 and a notch 7 to provide for its ready engagement with a cooperating spring pressed latch 8 mounted on a plate or casing 9 secured to the receptacle A.
The casing 9 is L-shaped in cross section and comprises a plate 10 having a narrower plate 11 extending at right angles from one Specification of Letters Patent.
This plate 4 has suitable apertures Patented July 1, 1913.- Serial No. 727,790.
toward the plate 10 to form a gulde for a coiled spring 15 :to be described. This strip 12has a tongue 16 extending laterally from its inner edge at'theendopposite said offset end 13 which is arranged-over an opening 17 in the plate 10, said tongue forming a fulcrum for the latch 8. The end Walls of the slot 17 are beveled as shown in Fig. 2
being inclined inwardly from the outer edges of the slot to coiiperate with inclined outer faces 18 on an outwardly bent or bulged portion 19 at one end of the latch 8, the tongue 16 fitting in the recess on the inner {face of said bulged portion. The strip 12 also hasia recess 20 in its inner edge intermediately of its-ends to receive the nose 6 of the catch when in operative position (see Fig. 1").
The latch 8 is formed from a strip of metal with the out bent portion 19 above'described at one .end and having its intermediate portion offset to provide a catch engaging element 21 which is preferably inclined inwardly as shown at 22 for engagement by the notch 7 of thecatch 3 (see Figs. 2 and 4.). The free end of this latch 8 is arranged in the same plane as the bulge in its other end and has a seat 23 on its inner face in which one endof thecoiled spring 15 is seated. The other end of said spring encircles the guide lug 14 on the strip 12 .(see Figs. 2, 5 and :6). This spring 15 exerts its tension to hold the latch 8 yieldably in engagement with the catch 3. The end of the latch having the seat .23 therein is made .in
the form of a push button 24 which is nor- .mally seated in an aperture 25 in the plate 10 and is adapted to be engaged from the outer face of said plate and depressed against the tension of the spring 15 to release the offset portion of the latch from engagement with the catch member 3 when it is desired to open the box.
The plate 11 has an aperture 26 arranged opposite the recessed portion of the plate 12 and the offset portion of the latch 8 to permit the insertion therethrough of the catch 8 which is secured to the top of the receptacle to which the lock is applied. This plate 11 also has an opening 27 arranged near one end and which is adapted to register with an opening 28 in the plate 10 to provide for the passage of the wire 29 of the seal. These openings 27 and 28 also register with the slot 5 in the catch plate 4 and the wire 29 is passed therethrough when the seal is applied as shown clearly in Fig. 3.
As shown in Fig. 1 the casing 9 is secured to the front plate of the box the cover ofwhich is to be secured by this look, the plate 10 of said casing being engaged with the outer wall of the box and the plate 11 arranged over the upper edge thereof. The attaching plate 4 of the catch is secured to the lower edge of the box top B as shown in Fig. l with the catch 3 arranged in position to enter the opening 26 when the top is lowered and thereby permit said catch to snap into engagement with the latch 8, whereby the cover is securely locked to the box. To release the cover the push button 24 is depressed which disengages the ofiset portion 22 from the catch 3 and permits the top to be readily lifted and the catch with drawn through the recess 26.- After the box has been locked by engagement of the catch member on the top with the latch member on the box the wire 29 is passed through the slot 5 in the plate 4 and the slots 27 and 28 on the plates 10 and 11 and the ends of said wire are brought together and sealed as shown at 80 and the box consequently can not be opened until said seal is broken.
WVhile I have described my invention with more or less minuteness as regards details and as being embodied in certain precise forms, I do not desire to be limited thereto unduly any more than is pointed out in the claims. On the contrary, I contemplate all proper changes in form, construction and arrangement, the omission of immaterial elements and substitution of equivalents as cir cumstances may suggest or render expedient.
I claim as my invention:
1. A box fastener comprising a casing having an opening in one wall thereof, a
latch member pivotally mounted at one end on the inner face of said casing and having its free end disposed in said opening, said latch member having a catch engaging portion intermediate its ends, a spring engaging the inner face of the free end of said latch to hold it normally in looking engagement, said casing having an opening in its wail adjacent said latch carried wall, said opening being arranged opposite the catch engaging portion of said latch and a catch adapted to be inserted through said opening and engage said latch.
2. A box fastener comprising a casing L- shaped in cross section, one wall of which has alined longitudinally spaced openings, a latch in the form of a metal strip having a bent out portion in one end fitting in one of said openings and a head at its other end seated in the other of said openings, said strip having an offset intermediate portion, a fulcrum for said latch extending transversely across the inner face of said bent out portion, a spring holding said head yieldably within said opening, said casing having an opening in its wall opposite the offset intermediate portion of the latch and a catch for insertion through said opening for engagement with said latch;
3. A box fastener comprising a casing, a strip secured to the inner face of one wall of said casing and having a tongue extending laterally inward from one edge thereof and one end offset, said casing having an opening opposite the offset portion of said strip, a latch pivotally mounted in said casing with its head seated in said opening and having a recess into which said tongue extends, said tongue forming a fulcrum for said latch, a coiled spring hearing at one end against the inner face of said head and at its other end against the offset portion of the strip, said casing having an opening therein opposite said latch and a catch having a hook shaped end for insertion through said opening and for engaging said latch.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- IlGSSBS.
Copies-of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
