To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX ARNDT, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at the city of Aix-la-Ohapelle, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Testing Air or other Gases; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the ing drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofthis specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for test ing air and gases by means of the variation in color of a liquid reagent.
A primary object of my invention is to provide apparatus of this type in which a small quantity of the liquid reagent is automatically obtained at definite intervals of time from a supply of the reagent and automatically supplied to one or more testing bodies, down which it trickles and changes in color corresponding to the nature of the gas or air to be test-ed for the time being.
Some illustrative embodiments of my invention are represented by way of example in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a vertical sectional elevation showing one form of apparatus, and Figs. 2 and 3 are like views showing modifications.
Referring firstly to Fig. 1, e designates a receptacle containing the liquid reagent 6, whose level can be kept approximately constant. A tube leads from the receptacle 6 to the bowl 6 over which is suspended a flexible body g, e. g. a tape or ribbon, in the path of a scoop d which is connected by a rod 0 with a crank b revoluble about an axle a driven by clockwork U. v
A number of basins i are arranged in a row at certain equal distances apart below the body 9. A thread f f f f, F, f is attached to each basin, respectively, and de pends therefrom to the next lower basin. These basins i may all be secured on a frame 72,, or the top one may be attached to the bowl 6 This form of my apparatus works as follows :The liquid reagent e may be a soda solution colored with phenolphthalein. When the axle a is driven by the clockwork U the scoop d dips at certain intervals into the bowl 6 and when rising takes liquid reagent out of the same and delivers it to the rlbbon g. The same flows from this in drops 2% into the first basin 2', is taken up by the thread f and drops therefrom into the basin f and so on.
If the apparatus is in pure atmospheric air the reagent retains its original violet coloration until it arrives at the lowest drop 6, whereas in the impure air of a room, on the contrary, one piece of thread after another from below upward loses its coloration, asithe impurificationof the air increases, owing to carbon dioxid and other impurities, so thatthe air is exceedingly bad if (ithe top piece of thread f appears violetre Instead of a number of pieces of thread 7,

Referring now to Fig. 2, the axle a rotates a disk I) once an hour by means of clockwork U. This disk has on its periphery a number of teeth 5 adapted to engage with the arm 6 of an angle lever b, b which can rock about the fulcrum 6 Each tooth b when engaging with the arm 5 lifts the scoop cl out of the reagent in the bowl 6 and then allows it to dip into the reagent again.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3, the clockwork again drives the axle a and toothed disk 6 whose teeth 6 rock the angle lever b, 12 around its fulcrum b so that the rod 0 is raised and allowed to fall by each tooth and thereby causes the scoop or spoon cZ alternately to be lifted out of and immersed into the liquid reagent 6 in the bowl 6 The spoon d rock's about a pivot al and is driven by means of a pin (Z and the rod 0 attached to the latter. When the spoon is immersed and rocked it scoops up a small quantity of the reagent and delivers it to the body or ribbon g.
I claim- 1. Apparatus for testing air and gases, comprising in combination, a vessel containing a liquid reagent, a bowl containing liquid reagent connected therewith, a scoop, means for immersing the scoop into and lifting the same out of liquid in the bowl, and a flexible body arranged in the path of the rising scoop for receiving and delivering in drops the liquid raised by the scoop from the bowl.

Apparatus for testing air and gases, comprising in combination, a vessel containing a liquid regeant, a bowl containing liquid reagent connected therewith, a plurality vof superposed basins arranged adjacent said bowl, a thread depending from each basin to the basin next below and from the lowest basin, a scoop, mechanism com-- prislng a clockwork-driven crank and a rod liquid reagent connected therewith, a scoop,
clockwork-driven mechanism for immersingthe scoop into and lifting the same out of liquid in the bowl, a flexible ribbon-like body arranged in the path of the rising scoop for receiving and delivering in drops the liquid raisedby the scoop from the bowl,
and a thread arranged under the bottom end of said body for receiving the drops of liquid.
4. Apparatus for testing air and gases comprising in combination a means for containing a liquid reagent, means adjacent said liquid reagent containing means to re ceive small quantities of the reagent, means to regularly and periodically deliver small quantities of the reagent from theco-ntaining means to the receiving means, and a series of members forming a long guiding path for the reagent to which said receiving means delivers and by which the reagent 'is exposed to the action of the air or gas and dropped from one to the other of said members.
5. Apparatus for testing air and gases comprising in combination a bowl for con-' taining liquid reagent, means to maintain the level thereof constant, a flexible ribbon adjacent said bowl, means to periodically deliver small quantities of reagent from the bowl to the ribbon and means forming a long vertical path to which said ribbon delivers the reagent.
