Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 103,239, dated May 17, 1870.

A is a cylindrical tube, representing the barrel or outer case of my sand and air chamber.;`
The lower end of the chamber is hermetically closed by a cover or bottom plate, B,
which is convex externally, and bears on one side of its cent-er a male screw, 0,'with an ex ternal lip or flange, called the trap-screw, fitting in a female screw borne by the cover. Theiobject of this screw is, that on being removed the sand separated from the upflowing current of water, having subsided and settled on the bottom piece, G, may be withdrawn.

This diaphragm D is borne by a tube, E,
called the lowertube, whose lower end passes through the lower cover or bottom, B, is fastened there, and projects beyond it an inch or more. The upper end of this lower tube passes through the diaphragm a little one side of' its center, is firmly fastened there, and the top tube-.opening opens on the upper side of the diaphragm.
F is the upper tube, and its lower end passes throughto the lower side of the diaphragm, (opening there below,) a little one side of the center of the same, and is firmly fastened to it. The upper end of this upper tube, F, passes through the upper cover, G, of the chamber, being fastened there, and projects an inch or more beyond the upper surface of this cover, there thus being a double support to the diaphragm D.
Operation.
To use this device of mine, I connect the upper tube, F, with the tube of a pump, and the lower tube, E, with the upper end of a tubular well. Y
Working the pump, the following action takes place: Both connections having been hermetically sealed, the air is withdrawn from the chamber. The water, &c., ascends in the lower tube, E, and, being discharged at the upper aperture of the same, runs down the radial iiutings of the diaphragm, and falls into the lower division of the chamber.
The sand, &c., owing to its superior gravity, falls down onto the lower cover, B, whence it is at pleasure withdrawn by means of the trapscrew C.
The center of this body of water in the lower division of the chamber is free from sand, the force of the current not being sufficient to draw the sand up again, and it is at the center, or
rather very near to it, that the lower end of the upper tube opens. Through this aperture the water, clear and free from impurities, passes Vup to the pump. Thus one function of my device is fulfilled.
The upper aperture of the lower tube, E, is slightly above the level of the lower aperture of the upper tube, F, and the surface of the water contained in the chamber is coincident with the top of the lower tube, thus leaving a space above the diaphragm filled with air, which Vair operates to regulate and equalize the flow of the respective ascending currents in the tubular well and in 'the pump, in the usual manner of airchambers connected with pumps, which is the second object of my de-` vlce. n
