Description

A. JAOOBSON.
ELECTRIC SWITCH. APPLICATION FILED 1120.4, 1911.
1,030,185. Patented June 18, 1912.
ELEGTBC LSSSS.
replication Recor-.uber e, ESM..
To all whom it may concern-f Be it known that I, ABRAM JAooBsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lanesville, in the county of Essex and State of llisssechnsetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in lectric Switches; and l do hereby declare the tot lowing to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the seme.
This invention relates to switches, and has for its object to construct s switch which will permit. a new set o bitteries to be switched into vthe circuit, namely, the circuit in connection with the internal coinbustion engines, without previously remov ing the old or wor v, batteries vfrom the circuit.
lt is a further object of the present invention to provide a means whereby the circuit may be changed from the magneto to the batteries, and vice versa witlioutcausing s miss in the lire ot the' engine during the change.
lvl/"ith the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the. construct-ion, combination and arravn'ement of parts, all as hereinafter more fully described, claimed. and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein: i
Figure l is aperspective view of a switch. constructed in accorda-nce with the present invention; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken along line 2-2 ot Fig. l.
The switch forming the subject metter ofA the present invention comprises a plate of insulating material provided st each con ner with o. spring or other suitable contact` member. A pair ot switch contact members are centrally provi for the plete, each contact member lia-ving rigidly secured thereto n horizontal bar. rlhe corresponding end of thesehoriZont-il bars here a. switch pivotally connected thereto, as will hereinafter be more nlly described.
Reference being more particularly to the drawings, 10 indicates en insulating plate of any suitable non-conductive material, said plate having et the transverse terminals thereof the Contact fingers ll and lla, one set of contact fingers il leading to either the magneto (not shown) or a new set et batteries, while the contact members 11a ere connected to the wires leading'y 'to the original set of batteries.
Speccetion ot Letters letent,
i Centrally disgosed with respect to the alined contact members 1l and lla, on each longitudinal side of the plate 10, is a central contact member l2. These Contact members are connected with wires which lead to the spark glug oit the internal combustion engine in any suitable way. Each contact `member `l?, has rigidly secured therein o. bar l which. has its terminals 13a and 123b odset inwardly, as illustrated in Fig. l, A switch ifi piroted to the terminals il of the bers 13 through the instrumentality'ot the arms le ci' seid switch, and is ot such construc- .tion that said arms ere 'adapted' to engage the Contact members l1. similar switch l'is pivotslly connected to the terminals 13a of the ber 13 through the medium oil the arms ia of said switch, said arms adapted to be engaged by the contact members lla. F rom the foregoing it will clearly be seen that when the elements of the device are in the positions ns illustrated in Fig. l, the current dows 'from the original set or" bettories (not shown) to the contact posts or members il through the arms 15a, through the terminals 13a oi' the bars 13 and contact members l2, and thence to the ignition device or" the engine. lWhen it is desired to change from the originel set of batteries to the magneto or to a new set of batteries when the originel set becomes' useless, the switch le is moved downwardly until the ernis le@ thereof engagethe contact members ll. rlfhis movement is mede previous to the removal of the switch l5 from engage ment with the contact members lla. Thus, when the Snitch le is engaged by the contact members lla the current will {iowfrom said contact members,- to the arms ist ot said switch, the terminals 13b of the Contact members l2 and thence to the ignition de- Vice of the enffine not shown. it will clearly be vunderstood that by the provision of this dcnble switch it is impossible 'for the engine to miss tire while transferring from one series of electrical supply to another, as is the case when a single switch is used.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim ss new, and desire to secure oy il. S. Letters Patent, is:v
in a switch, the combination with a base constructed ci insulating materia-l, contact l members located centre-ily and adjacent to the loncitudinsl sides ot seid base. bor car- Iried by each central contact 'member sobi stentielly parallel to the longitudinal sides set terminals of said bars, each switch adaptof lsaid base having the terminals theieot l ed to oopeiate with one paiid of ooi'ner con- Oifset inwardly, a Contact post located acltact posts.
jacent to each corner of said base, each pair In testimony whereof I aiilx my signature thereof along the longitudinal sides of the in presence of two Witnesses.
base being in direct alineinent with one ot' ABRAM JCOBSON, the Central Contact members, and indepenclently operating switches carried by the offibn s:
lV t esse JOHN E. PETERSON, IDA M. PETERSON.
