BURTON W. SWEET, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HARRY Z. SANDS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
DETACHABLE TELEPHONE-SUPPORT.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, BURTON W. SWEET, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and ,useful Improvements in Detachable Telephone-Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in separable supporting members specially designed for removably mounting` a telephone instrument in convenient position for use, as at the end of an extensible pivoted arm.
lhe object of my invention has been the production of a device of this character, which shall be simple, light and cheap, and to this end it preferably is formed of sheet metal. In my application, Serial No. 362,874, I have described a sheet metal eX- tensible arm, with which I have chosen to show my present improvement directly associated in the accompanying drawings. My; said improvement is equally adapted for useli in removably supporting one or more tele--l phone instruments in any position required,1 and I may briefly refer to the features' thereof in a preliminary way, by stating that one member of said separable supportpv comprises an arm-section preferably flanged to strengthen the same, and formed from an i itegral sheet metal blank. In a socket, provided in said member, the second member readily fits; the same comprising a cylindrical portion seated in said socket, and a laterally extending wing or wings with which the telephone instrument is permanently connected. Thus said instrument will be securely held by the socketed member, but may be instantly taken in the hand' for use, and returned to the socket-member when out of use.
Further details of construction will be more readily gathered by making reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, forming a part of this specification, wherein Figure I is a view in side elevation partially broken away, showing the sheet metal supporting arm and the telephone support of my invention. Fig. II is an enlarged detail, showing the removable member in side elevation and partially broken away. Fig. III is a top View thereof. Fig. IV is a perspect-ive view of the socketed arm-section or support. Fig. V is a cross-sectional view Specification of Letters Patent.

thereof; and Fig. VI is a plan view illustrating the employment of a plurality of said arm-sections for .the support of a corresponding number of telephone .instruments.
Throughout each of the several figures of the drawings, I have employed the same character of reference to indicate similar parts.
Referring first to Fig. IV, it is seen thata socketed bracket, or arm-section a, is formed from an integral sheet metal blank of suitable shape, and affording rearwardly extending ears a and reinforcing top and bottom flanges a2. lIhese latter stiffen or strengthen the walls of a substantially cylindrical sockets a3 open at the front, and permit of relatively light construction, without impairing the strength of the bracket. The co-acting separable member l) is formed of an integral blank of sheet metal, affording a cylindrical portion o', web b2, and two laterally extending wings o, through which screws c extend to secure the telephone instrument or standard c rigidly thereto. Preferably a pin bolt b3 with a rounded or tapered terminal is inclosed within the cylindrical portion Z9 of the separable member, although this is not essential, if the metal be still3 enough to avoid collapse or deformation. Une or more of the flanges a2 may also be dispensed with under like conditions, but preferably these features are employed as herein shown and described.
The ears a are rearwardly connected by a pivotal bolt CZ, with the adjacent armsection c of the pivoted extension-arm, or if no pivotal motion of the outer arm-section is desired, this joint may be made rigid simply by tightening said bolt.
Where a plurality of telephone instruments are to be accommodated upon a single arm, as indicated in Fig. IV, one of said arm-sections may be made longer than the other, as a4, in order to avoid interference, while the several arm-sections preferably are pivoted so that any one of the telephones may instantly be turned into position for use. In the extension-arm, shown in Fig. I, which equally with other suitable means, may be employed to carry my improved separable supporting appliance, the armsection e is united by a pivotal joint f with the inner arm-section g, which in turn is carried upon a pivotal joint h by means of a static-nary sheet metal bracket j. Each of these arm-sections e and g is formed of a single strap of sheet metal, preferably key stock, bentv to afford integral sockets at either end, with a rigid intermediate body portion, thereby affording a strong and 'servicable eXtensible arm.
From the foregoing, it Will be seen that the telephone instrument, When mounted for support upon my separable sheet metal bracket members, is readily turned upon its lpivotal mountings into any desired position for use, While held securely in place, or on the other hand if the telephone user Wishes to take the instrument in his hands for greater convenience, the separable members admit of instant detachment for this purpose, since one member lits loosely Within the socket of the other. Where a plurality of such instruments are employed, as Where local or intercommunicating instruments are required, as Well as a long distance tel ephone, for example, each of these instru*y ments is instantly available, and having its .own receptacle, the connecting cords thereof are not liable to become tangled, twisted or broken. As before, the pivoted arm-sectionsv permit the telephones to be turned indivduing zl. In a device of the class described, the combination With a socket member formed of an integral sheet metal blank affording a substantially cylindrical socket or recess cut by a lateral opening or slot, and overturned flanges adjacent to the top and bottom thereof, of a separable coacting supporting member shaped from sheet metal to afford a cylindrical engaging part presented to the socket member, and an integral attaching part or lug for the supported inf strument, substantially as set forth.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a socket member formed of an integral sheet metal blank, comprising` a substantially cylindrical socket portion having a vertical opening and an attaching part therefor, of a separable co-acting supporting member formed of an integral sheet metal blank, comprising a substantially- Signed at Cleveland, this 8th day of March, A.
