Description

The present invention relates to functionalized diene polymers having improved processing properties in the unvulcanized state and hysteretic properties in the vulcanized state in elastomeric compositions comprising silica as filler, in their application in tire casings and a new process for the preparation of said functionalized polymers.

Since fuel economy and the need to protect the environment have become a priority, it is desirable to produce polymers with good mechanical properties and as little hysteresis as possible so that they can be used in the form of rubber compositions. usable for the manufacture of various semi-finished products used in the constitution of tire casings such as, for example, undercoats, rubbers between rubbers of different kinds or for calendering metallic or textile reinforcements, sidewall rubbers or treads and obtain tires with improved properties, in particular having a reduced rolling resistance.

To achieve such an objective, numerous solutions have been proposed which consist in particular in modifying the nature of the diene polymers and copolymers at the end of polymerization by means of coupling or staring or functionalization agents. The vast majority of these solutions have essentially focused on the use of polymers modified with carbon black as reinforcing filler in order to obtain a good interaction between the modified polymer and carbon black because the use of fillers reinforcing whites, and silica in particular, has been found to be inappropriate due to the low level of certain properties of such compositions and consequently of certain properties of the tires using these compositions. In addition, the use of silica raises processing difficulties due to silica / silica interactions which tend in the raw state to cause agglomeration of the silica particles before and even after mixing and thus to increase the consistency of the compositions. rubbery, in any case to make the implementation more difficult than the implementation of carbon black. As examples of this prior art, we can cite US Pat. No. 3,135,716 which describes the reaction of living diene polymers at the end of the chain with a polyfunctional organic coupling agent to obtain polymers with improved properties. US-B-3,281,383 which describes as coupling or grafting agents of living diene polymers polyepoxides, polyisocyanates, polyamines, polyaldehydes, polyketones, polyanhydrides, polyesters, polyhalides among which polyhalogenated silicon compounds. US-B-3 244 664 which describes, as coupling or staring agent, diene polymers of tetraalkoyxysilanes. French patent FR-A-69 24444 which describes, as a staring agent, compounds comprising either the group -0-C (0) -0-, or the group -0-C (0) -RC (0 ) -0- and which leads to diene polymers having improved processing properties and properties in the vulcanized state. In US-B-4,185,042, the use of silicon compounds comprising an epoxide group has been described as coupling agent and / or star of diene polymers in order to prepare coupled polymers and / or stars. The coupling and / or staring agent is present in an amount of 0.05 to 4 moles per mole of living polymer or copolymer and it is reacted with the living polymer under operating conditions leading to a coupling reaction and / or star. The coupled or star polymers described in this patent have the properties of both an elastomer and a thermoplastic. No reference is made to charged mixtures and nothing allows a person skilled in the art to think that such coupled or star polymers could be of interest for compositions comprising silica as reinforcing filler. More recently, in the European Polymer Journal, Vol. 17, 1981, pages 213 to 220, A. Crespy and MJ Abadie describe polystyrene and polyisoprene oligomers functionalized by opening the epoxy ring using 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTSI) obtained by pouring drop by drop the live oligomers prepared by anionic catalysis on the functionalizing agent then by deactivating with methanol. It is specified that the yield is improved when the GPTSI is dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (THF). On pages 221 to 227 of this same volume, these authors describe certain polymers functionalized by GPTSI which are obtained by first preparing the polymer by anionic polymerization, then subjecting it to a metallation using naphthalene lithium in excess then by pouring the living polymer dropwise onto an excess GPTSI solution. The functionalization process described by these authors is totally unusable industrially.

The interest of using silica as reinforcing filler in elastomeric compositions is old but the use of silica as reinforcing filler remained very limited because of the drawbacks mentioned above and this despite the attempts made to remedy the deficiency of the properties exhibited by such compositions. Thus, it has been proposed to use functionalized diene polymers in place of non-functionalized polymers. By way of example of such a prior art, mention may be made of European patent application EP-A-0 299 074 which describes a diene rubber composition filled with silica based on a diene polymer functionalized with using a silane having a non-hydrolyzable alkoxyl residue. European patent application EP-A-0 447 066 describes a composition loaded with silica containing a diene polymer functionalized using a halogenated silane compound. Despite the improvement in the properties obtained with the use of such functionalized polymers, the silica compositions described in this prior art have not proved to be usable for constituting tire treads because the properties exhibited, although improved, nevertheless remain insufficient compared at the required level. This interest in compositions reinforced with silica has been revived recently with the publication of European patent application EP-A-0 501 227 which discloses a sulfur-vulcanizable rubber composition obtained by thermomechanical work of a conjugated diene copolymer and of an aromatic vinyl compound prepared by solution polymerization with 30 to 150 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of elastomer of a particular precipitated silica obtained according to the process which is the subject of European patent application EP-A- 0 157 703, which presents an excellent compromise between several contradictory properties and which for the first time allows the marketing of tires having a tread loaded with silica effectively possessing the excellent compromise required.

It is known to those skilled in the art that functionalized diene polymers which confer very advantageous properties on compositions containing silica as reinforcing filler are obtained with the tetraalkoxysilanes and in particular the tetramethoxysilane (TMSI) used in as functionalizing agents. This results, for example, from US Pat. No. 3,244,664, already cited, which mentions orthosilicates and describes compositions exhibiting improved properties using polymers modified with tetraethoxysilane.

The teaching that the tetra-alkoxysilane components are the most potentially interesting for reacting at the end of the chain with respect to silica also results from patent application EP-A-0 299 074, already cited, making itself reference to Japanese patent application JP-A- 56/104,906 describing tetraalkoxysilane functionalizing agents, and which teaches that although these compounds very significantly increase the properties of polymers, but that the polymers thus functionalized when subjected to stripping with water vapor to remove the polymerization solvent undergoes a macrostructural evolution which leads to severe degradation of the potentially advantageous properties. In addition, this development is very difficult to control.

It is therefore desirable to obtain functionalized diene polymers having substantially the same level of properties as those functionalized with TMSI which is potentially the most reactive of the tetraalkoxysilanes but by means of a well controllable process allowing the implementation of the means classic industrialists, particularly the steam steam stripping operation.

The present invention aims to obtain functionalized diene polymers capable of imparting improved properties, in particular of hysteresis and reinforcement, to elastomer compositions containing silica as reinforcing filler.

The invention also relates to new rubber compositions containing silica as reinforcing filler based on functionalized diene polymers having satisfactory raw processing properties and improved properties in the vulcanized state, in particular better hysteresis and better reinforcement.

The invention further relates to tire treads and tires having improved properties including reduced rolling resistance.

The number Np is obtained by the mass ratio of polymer on molecular mass in number of the polymer, the latter being determined by osmometry or tonometry.

As the polymerization initiator, any known anionic or non-mono-or polyfunctional initiator can be used. However, an initiator containing an alkali metal such as lithium or an alkaline earth metal such as barium is preferably used. As organolithium initiators suitable in particular are those comprising one or more carbon-lithium bonds. Representative compounds are the aliphatic organolithians such as ethyl lithium, n-butyl lithium (n-BuLi), isobutyl lithium, polymethylene dilithium such as 1,4-dilithiobutane, etc. Compounds Representative containing barium are those described for example in patent applications FR-A- 2 302 311 and FR-A- 2 273 822 and the certificates of addition FR-A-2 338 953 and FR-A-2 340 958 whose content is incorporated here.

By number of active sites is meant the number of sites actually available to mitigate the polymerization.

The polymerization is, as known per se, preferably carried out in the presence of an inert solvent which can for example be an aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon such as pentane, hexane, heptane, iso-octane, cyclohexane or an aromatic hydrocarbon such as benzene, toluene, xylene.

The polymerization can be carried out continuously or batchwise. The polymerization is generally carried out at a temperature between 20 ° C and 120 ° C and preferably close to 30 ° C to 90 ° C. It is of course also possible to add, at the end of the polymerization, a transmetallation agent to modify the reactivity of the living chain end.

It is essential that the addition of the functionalizing agent to the living polymer be done by means of an appropriate mixing which aims to reach the highest level of micromixing before the two constituents can significantly react with one another in appreciable amounts in order to to obtain a degree of homogeneity such that it allows substantially only the reaction of a single reactive site of the living polymer with a single group SiOR² of the functionalizing agent. To this end, the characteristic mixing time must be less than or equal and preferably much less than the characteristic reaction time between the two constituents and moreover less and preferably much less than the characteristic molecular diffusion time of the constituents present.

Conviennent particulièrement les dispositifs de mélangeage qui dissipent des puissances volumiques de l'ordre de 0,1 à 100 kW/m³/unité de viscosité dynamique du mélange réactionnel en Pa.s et préférentiellement qui dissipent des puissances volumiques comprises entre 1 et 10 kW/m³ /Pa.s.Mixing can be carried out by any suitable means, in particular using any static mixer and / or any dynamic mixer known to those skilled in the art. Particularly suitable are mixing devices which dissipate volumic powers of the order of 0.1 to 100 kW / m³ / unit of dynamic viscosity of the reaction mixture in Pa.s and preferably which dissipate volumic powers between 1 and 10 kW / m³ /Pa.s.

Being well known to those skilled in the art that the mixing temperature of two constituents capable of reacting chemically with each other is one of the parameters which strongly influence the speed of chemical reaction of the mixed constituents and the physical properties of the resulting reaction fluid of mixing, the person skilled in the art for producing functionalized and / or substantially functionalized diene polymers having predefined properties will of course adapt the various parameters to one another and in particular the mixing temperature, the mixing device, the intensity mixing and the choice of the RM ratio, it being understood that from an industrial point of view, it is economically advantageous to approach the value RM = 1.

The process according to the invention thus allows great flexibility in obtaining and orienting the functionalization reaction, to the detriment of the coupling and / or star reaction. The functional character of the polymer can be quantitatively determined by a person skilled in the art by appropriate techniques known to a person skilled in the art for assaying the number of moles of silicon, of epoxy function present, such as NMR, colorimetry, etc ... regardless of the mono or polyfunctional nature of the polymer.

Les polymères diéniques fonctionnalisés selon le procédé conforme à l'invention présentent simultanément un rapport PF ≧ 0,85 et PV ≧ 0,90.The reality of the functionalization reaction can be highlighted by the 2 reports PF and PV. The diene polymers functionalized according to the process according to the invention simultaneously exhibit a ratio PF ≧ 0.85 and PV ≧ 0.90.

The reality of the coupling and / or star reaction can be demonstrated by means of either the apparent star jump (SEA) or the viscosity jump (SV). In the case of a monofunctional initiator, the SEA is equal to the ratio of the molecular weights of the functionalized polymer / non-functionalized polymer. The higher this ratio, the more it expresses a significant coupling or starring. The viscosity jump is equal to the inherent viscosity ratio of the functionalized polymer, that is to say of the polymer recovered after reaction with the functionalizing agent, over the inherent viscosity of the living polymer stopped with methanol. A ratio 1 for the viscosity jump expresses a reaction of pure functionalization. The higher this ratio, the more it expresses the presence of a coupling or star reaction. The inherent viscosity (dl / g) is measured at 25 ° C. in solution at 1 g / liter in toluene.

La fonctionnalisation peut également être réalisée en plusieurs étapes pour conduire à un polymère diénique substantiellement fonctionnalisé, c'est-à-dire à un polymère possédant au moins 70 % de molécules répondant à la formule II (Y)m-R¹-Si(OR²)₂-P lorsqu'on utilise un initiateur monofonctionnel ou au moins 60 % d'extrémités de chaînes répondant à la formule III (Y)m-R¹-Si(OR²)₂-P' lorsqu'on utilise un initiateur polyfonctionnel, dans lesquellesThe functionalization can of course be carried out with a compound or more compounds corresponding to the general formula I. The functionalization can be carried out in a single step to yield a fully functionalized diene polymer. The functionalization can also be carried out in several stages to lead to a substantially functionalized diene polymer, that is to say to a polymer having at least 70% of molecules corresponding to the formula II (Y) m-R¹-Si (OR² ) ₂-P when using a monofunctional initiator or at least 60% of chain ends corresponding to the formula III (Y) m-R¹-Si (OR²) ₂-P 'when using a polyfunctional initiator, in which

P represents the chain of the diene polymer and P ′ an end of the diene polymer chain in the case of a polyfunctional initiator. , preferably from 80% to 100%, and at most 20% of star or coupled chains. When a modification of the living polymer is carried out in two or more stages, the functionalization reaction must always take place last after the coupling and / or star reaction for there to be functionalization of the living chains not stopped during from the previous step or steps. It is of course possible within the framework of a functionalization in several stages, two or more, to functionalize the living polymer with a functionalizing agent different from those corresponding to general formula I such as for example suitable derivatives of benzophenone or of tin, an alkoxy-silane compound, halogenated or not, etc.

It is also possible to use in the first stage a compound of formula I as coupling and / or staring agent just as it is possible to use in the first stage any coupling or stellar diene polymers described in the prior art, in particular those, such as tin derivatives, having an affinity for carbon black. Thus it is possible to obtain substantially functionalized polymers which are particularly advantageous for imparting improved properties both with respect to silica and with carbon black to compositions containing both silica and carbon black as reinforcing fillers. .

Of course, one or more antioxidant agents can be added to the reaction mixture before recovery of the functionalized polymer. The functionalized polymer is separated from the reaction medium by conventional techniques, that is to say either by coagulation, or by entrainment in water vapor of the solvent, or by evaporation by any means whatsoever, for example evaporation under vacuum then drying if necessary.

The process according to the invention, unlike that of the prior art, can be used industrially economically not only because of the rapidity of the functionalization reaction of the living polymer which is compatible with an industrial process but also and mainly in due to the fact that it allows the subsequent elimination of the polymerization solvent present in the functionalized polymer by entrainment with water vapor, conventionally called stripping, and this without a macrostructural evolution of the functionalized polymer being manifested, which is reflected for example by a considerable increase in the Mooney viscosity, contrary to what is the case and well known to those skilled in the art with the TMSI otherwise considered by those skilled in the art as the silane functionalizing agent leading to the most reactive functionalized polymer with respect to silica and to compositions containing silica as a filler with excellent properties, especially at the hysteresis level. The process according to the invention makes it possible to obtain functionalized diene polymers having a Mooney viscosity which can extend over a large scale of between 10 and 150 and preferably between 30 and 100.

Of course, the total content of the various bonds is always equal to 100%.

The polymers functionalized with the functionalizing agent corresponding to general formula I have a particular ability to be used to form rubber compositions comprising silica as reinforcing filler. They have and confer on non-vulcanized compositions containing at least partially or exclusively silica as reinforcing filler satisfactory processing properties, in particular an extrudability or a drawing ability using a extruder compatible with tools industrial. Furthermore, these polymers make it possible to obtain vulcanized compositions having improved mechanical properties as well as reduced hysteresis, which makes them particularly suitable for use in the manufacture of tires. Preferably, compositions based on diene polymers having from 80% to 100% are suitable. of functionalized polymer chains.

This beneficial effect in terms of properties is obtained with all the precipitated silicas known to those skilled in the art having a BET surface area of less than or equal to 450 m2 / g, a CTAB specific surface area of less than or equal to 450 m2 / g even if this improvement is more pronounced with a highly dispersible precipitated silica. By highly dispersible silica is meant any silica having an ability to disaggregate and to disperse in a very large polymer matrix observable by microscopy, electronic or optical, on fine sections. As nonlimiting examples of such preferred highly dispersible silicas, mention may be made of those described in European patent applications EP-A-0 157 703 and EP-A-0 520 862 or the silica Zeosil 1165 MP from the company Rhône-Poulenc, the Perkasil KS 430 silica from Akzo Company, Hi-Sil 2000 silica from PPG Company.

The beneficial effect is obtained regardless of the physical state in which the silica is present, that is to say that it is in the form of powder, microbeads, granules, beads and whatever the specific surface of silica. When both silica and carbon black are used as reinforcing fillers in compositions, improved properties are always obtained in the vulcanized compositions. It is of course also possible to use blends of different silicas and to use other white fillers.

As carbon blacks, all carbon blacks are suitable, in particular all the blacks commercially available or conventionally used in tires and particularly in tire treads. The amount of carbon black present can vary within wide limits, it being understood however that the improvement in properties will be all the more important as the level of silica present is high. The amount of carbon black present is preferably equal to or less than 200% of the amount of silica present in the composition.

I.The functionalized polymers can be used alone in rubber compositions or in blending with any other diene elastomer, in particular with any elastomer conventionally used in tires and in particular in treads. It is however obvious that the greater the proportion of conventional elastomer present in the composition, the less the improvement. This is why the conventional elastomer, such as natural rubber, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, a butadiene-styrene or butadiene-styrene-isoprene copolymer, etc. may be present between 1 and 70 parts by weight per 100 parts of functionalized polymer according to the invention. This conventional elastomer can of course be itself an elastomer fully or partially functionalized with a functionalizing agent other than that used in the process according to the invention or be a coupled or star-based polymer including with a compound corresponding to the general formula I.

The compositions in accordance with the invention can obviously also contain the other constituents and additives usually used in rubber mixtures such as plasticizers, pigments, antioxidants, sulfur, vulcanization accelerators, extension oils, one or more agents coupling or binding of silica and / or one or more silica covering agents such as polyols, amines, alkoxysilanes, etc.

The invention is illustrated without implied limitation by the examples which should not constitute a limitation of the scope of the invention.

Exemple 1Example 1

The purpose of this example is to describe a discontinuous embodiment of the process for preparing a functionalized polymer according to the invention.

Tous les polybutadiènes possèdent une teneur en liaisons-1,2 de 23 %, une teneur en liaisons-trans-1,4 de 44 % et une teneur en liaisons cis-1,4 de 33 %.In this example, 6 identical tests are carried out, except for the variable amounts of functionalizing agent used in each of the tests. In a 10 liter reactor under nitrogen pressure, 6.35 l of toluene are introduced as solvent then 500 g of 1,3-butadiene and finally 250 ppm of THF as promoter of vinyl bonds. Then added n-BuLi in an appropriate amount to neutralize the impurities present in the reaction medium after which 0.00300 mole of n-BuLi is added representing the amount of active initiator to initiate the polymerization. This is carried out at 60 ° C for 48 minutes and the measured conversion rate is 100%. All polybutadienes have a 1,2-linkage content of 23%, a trans-1,4-linkage content of 44% and a cis-1,4 linkage content of 33%.

In the reactor containing the polybutadiene having a living C-lithium end, GPTSI * is added with intense stirring in variable quantities appropriate for each of the tests. The functionalization reaction is carried out at 60 ° C. In the context of control test 1, methanol is added in place of GPTSI in an amount such that there is a methanol / initiator ratio equal to 2. Three minutes after the addition of GPTSI or methanol, 0 is added. , 5 parts per hundred parts of 4,4'-methylene-bis-2,6-ditertiobutyl phenol elastomer as an antioxidant agent. The polybutadiene obtained for each of the tests is coagulated in methanol and dried at 50 ° C under reduced pressure for 36 hours.
(*) GPTSI sold by Hüls under the trade name DYNASYLAN GLYMO.

For each of the polymers, the final inherent viscosity, the Mooney viscosity (1 + 4 at 100 ° C.), the molecular mass in number (Mn) determined by osmometry, the epoxy and silicon atom rates, the apparent star jump and viscosity jump.

Le spectre ¹H RMN du polymère est caractérisé par un massif à 2,9 ppm correspondant au déplacement chimique du motif CH-0 de la fonction époxy et par un massif à 0,5 ppm correspondant au déplacement chimique du motif SiCH₂.The measurement of the levels of epoxy function and of silicon atoms is carried out as follows: for each of the tests, 10 g of the modified polymer are taken which are subjected to extraction by several dissolution cycles using disulphide carbon and then coagulation in methanol in order to eliminate the presence of any residual agent corresponding to formula I, that is to say which would not be linked to the polymer. The ¹H NMR spectrum of the polymer is characterized by a solid at 2.9 ppm corresponding to the chemical shift of the CH-0 unit of the epoxy function and by a solid at 0.5 ppm corresponding to the chemical shift of the SiCH₂ unit.

The results show that when the RM ratio is equal to or greater than 1 there is exclusively as in test 6 or substantially as in tests 3 to 5, a functionalization reaction unlike the coupling reaction which takes place mainly in test 2 in accordance with the state of the art constituted by patent US-B-4 185 042. The SEA of the polymer prepared according to test 2 is high but nevertheless lower than that which is mentioned in this patent and which is ≧ to 2.

Exemple 2Example 2

The purpose of this example is to describe a continuous mode of execution of the process for the preparation of a functionalized butadiene-styrene copolymer according to the invention and the influence of the mixing and of its intensity on the functionalization reaction.

En sortie de réacteur la conversion mesurée est de 88 %.Toluene, butadiene, styrene and THF are continuously introduced into a 32 liter useful capacity reactor with turbine type agitator in a mass ratio of 100: 10: 4.3: 0.3 and a solution of 530 micromoles of active n-BuLi per hundred grams of monomers. The flow rates of these different solutions are calculated to have an average residence time of 45 minutes with vigorous stirring. The temperature is kept constant at 60 ° C. At the outlet of the reactor, the measured conversion is 88%.

The SBR copolymer contains 26% of incorporated styrene and a content of 41% of 1,2-bonds for the butadiene part.

At the outlet of the reactor, the functionalization agent is added to the polymer at the inlet, either of a conventional static mixer (MS) comprising 26 elements and a volume of 250 ml, or at the inlet of a dynamic mixer (MD ) of 250 ml fitted with an agitator regulated at a rotation speed of 3100 revolutions per minute. 8 tests are carried out with variable amounts of GPTSI. The functionalization reaction is carried out at 60 ° C. In the context of control test 14, methanol is added in place of GPTSI in an amount such that there is a methanol / initiator ratio equal to 2. In addition, for each of tests 7 to 11 carried out with a ratio RM ≧ 1.00, a control test, indexed b, is carried out in which the copolymer is stopped with methanol with a methanol / initiator ratio of 2 as in the four tests 7 to 11 but using an amount of active initiator suitable for obtaining a copolymer having substantially the same inherent viscosity as the functionalized copolymer from each corresponding test. For all the tests, after 2 minutes, 0.8 part per hundred parts of copolymer of 2,2'-methylene bis (4-methyl-6-tertiobutylphenol) and 0.2 part of N- (1,3-dimethyl) are added. -butyl) -N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine as antioxidants. The copolymer is recovered by the conventional stripping operation with water vapor of the solvent and then dried in an oven at 50 ° C. The inherent viscosities are measured before the stripping operation.

Figure imgb0005
The results are reported in Table II.
Figure imgb0005

The results of tests 7 to 11 show that the functionalization is greater when the mixing of 2 constituents is carried out using a dynamic mixer, that is to say when the intensity of the mixing is large; this makes it possible to operate with an RM ratio approaching 1, a ratio which is economically advantageous from an industrial point of view.

The values relating to tests 8 and 9 show that there has been almost exclusively a functionalization reaction on silicon while those relating to tests 12 and 13 show that there is a significant coupling and / or starring and mainly by opening of the epoxy function.

This example shows that by a judicious choice of the mixing process, it is possible to exercise control over the value of the molar ratio RM and consequently direct and control the functionalization reaction.

Tests 7 to 11 also show, by comparison with the polymers, corresponding control tests of the same inherent viscosity before stripping, that the polymers functionalized according to the process according to the invention do not lead to an evolution of macrostructure during the stripping operation as evidenced by the Mooney viscosity index.

The purpose of this example is to prepare a butadiene-styrene-isoprene copolymer functionalized according to the process according to the invention.

The flow rates of these different solutions are calculated to have a residence time of 45 minutes. The temperature is kept constant at 75 ° C. At the outlet of the reactor, the measured conversion is 81%. The SBIR terpolymer contains 25% of incorporated styrene, 33% of incorporated butadiene having a content of -1,2 bonds of 25% while the content of 3,4 bonds for the isoprene part is 20%.

At the outlet of the reactor, the GPTSI is added to the inlet of a static mixer, comprising 26 elements and a volume of 250 ml, to the living polymer.

The functionalization reaction is carried out at 60 ° C. In the context of control test 16, inethanol is added in place of GPTSI in an amount such that there is a methanol / initiator ratio equal to 2. Exemple 4Example 4

I.The purpose of this example is to describe the preparation of copolymers functionalized with different functionalizing agents in order to demonstrate the excellent properties of rubber compositions containing silica as reinforcing filler and comprising a polymer functionalized with a functionalizing agent corresponding to the general formula I.

Les 7 polymères possèdent la même microstructure que ceux préparés à l'exemple 2.7 polymers are prepared according to the synthesis method described in Example 2 and which is distinguished from it only by the fact that the amount of active initiator used is adjusted so that the value of the Mooney viscosity index of each functionalized polymer is 70 ± 3. The inherent viscosity was measured before and after functionalization before stripping to be able to determine the jump in viscosity SV. The 7 polymers have the same microstructure as those prepared in Example 2.

To carry out 5 tests, the following functionalization agents are used:
  • for test A, GPTSI
  • for test A ', the ECETSI
  • for test B, propyltrimethoxysilane (PTSI)
  • for test C, 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (CPTSI)
  • for test D, the TMSI.

Pour les 7 essais, on a utilisé le même mélangeur statique que celui décrit à l'exemple 2.To carry out the last 2 tests which are control tests, GPTSI is used for test E as a staring agent under the conditions of patent US-B-4,185,042 while for test T, an SBR is prepared which is simply stopped with methanol. For the 7 tests, the same static mixer was used as that described in Example 2.

The polymer functionalized with TMSI is collected as described in Example 1 and not as described in Example 2 because the use of TMSI as a functionalizing agent and not as a coupling or staring agent leads to an inevitable evolution of macrostructure during the stripping operation, as evidenced by the values of the measured Mooney viscosities which range from 78 to 107 in accordance with an evolution well known to those skilled in the art.

It is observed at the level of the properties in the vulcanized state, on the one hand that overall the mechanical resistance of the functionalized compositions A and A ′ is very close to that of the composition D and slightly higher than that of the compositions B and C, which is favorable in terms of wear resistance of a tire fitted with a tread formed by such a composition, and on the other hand that the hysteretic properties both at high and at low deformations are improved compared to those exhibited by compositions B and C and very close to those exhibited by composition D, which is favorable for reducing the rolling resistance of a tire fitted with a tread formed by such a composition and to form a tread underlayment or a sidewall rubber. It is found that the functionalized copolymers A and A ′ have properties clearly superior to those of the SBRE polymer spangled using GPTSI as well as the SBRT polymer stopped with methanol.

In other words, the polymers and copolymers functionalized with a functionalizing agent corresponding to general formula I make it possible to obtain compositions having substantially the same rubber properties as those obtained with a composition based on a polymer functionalized in laboratory using TMSI but while not leading to changes in macrostructure during the stripping operation.

Exemple 6Example 6

The purpose of this example is to show that the improved properties are obtained whatever the specific surface of the silica and whatever its form of presentation.

In this example, two series of tests are carried out, one using microbeads in the form of precipitated silica having a BET specific surface of 85 m2 / g sold by the Rhône Poulenc company under the name Zeosil 85 MP and the other using a precipitated silica in the form of granules and marketed by the company Degussa under the trade name Ultrasil VN3 and which has a specific surface CTAB of 170 m2 / g.

For the two series of tests, with the formulation described in Example 5, three compositions are produced with the functionalized copolymers A and B prepared in Example 4, the third composition being produced with the same non-functionalized SBRT copolymer serving of control composition.

It can be seen that whatever the specific surface of the silica and whatever its form of presentation, microbeads or granules, the compositions using the functionalized copolymers A generally have interesting reinforcing properties (MA300 / MA100) and above all properties hysteretic to strong and to small deformations significantly improved compared to those exhibited by the other compositions. Thus, the compositions according to the invention based on polymers and copolymers functionalized with a functionalizing agent corresponding to general formula I are particularly suitable for constituting treads and tires having improved properties in terms of resistance to wear and rolling resistance.
