Abstract
Description
The invention relates to the use of monoterpenes as air fresheners and insect repellants in funeral services and in the sanitary sector.
Air fresheners (deodorants) should bind or mask unpleasant smells. They are also said to be advantageous as an insect repellent, especially against flies and mosquitoes.
Both in the sanitary area and in the funeral service, smells usually occur, which can be extremely unpleasant for those working there, especially in the warm season. The simultaneously occurring insects are a nuisance and pose health risks.
Deodorizing agents are used as antidotes, which up to now largely contained p-dichlorobenzene in the sanitary sector and only in funeral services.
This is no longer justifiable from a toxicological and ecological point of view. Even if p-dichlorobenzene is only classified as less toxic, it must be assumed, as with all chlorinated aromatics, that secondary products of this have a toxic effect on humans and other living beings and, in the course of combustion processes, dangerous decomposition products, probably even those that can be classified as very toxic Dioxins can lead.
In addition, the odor-improving effect is limited, since p-dichlorobenzene smells very unpleasant and unpleasant.
A deodorant is known which is preferably used as an air purifier and in toilet facilities and which comprises a "camphor compound" (cf. WO 85/00980). The "camphor compound" is borneol, isoborneol, camphene or camphor and is used in an amount of 1 to 50% by weight. The deodorant also contains detergents, poly waxes and fillers.
EP 285983).The suitability of pure isoborneol as a moth repellent agent is also known (cf. EP 285983).
It has now been found that the desired effect as an air freshener and insect repellent is achieved well by a monoterpene derivative alone. Borneol, isoborneol, camphor or isobornyl acetate, preferably isoborneol, are used, these monoterpenes not requiring any further additives.
Borneol 5800-7200 mg/kg
Isoborneol 4300-6200 mg/kg
Isobornylacetat über 10000 mg/kgThese monoterpenes are harmless from a toxicological and ecological point of view, as the following information shows:
LD₅₀ (rat, oral): camphor over 5000 mg / kg
Borneol 5800-7200 mg / kg
Isoborneol 4300-6200 mg / kg
Isobornyl acetate over 10000 mg / kg
Im Ames-Test zeigen Kampfer, Isoborneol und Isobornylacetat kein mutagenes Potential. In the Ames test, camphor, isoborneol and isobornyl acetate show no mutagenic potential.
In saturated solution they show a degradability of approx. 90% in 5 days.
When burning with sufficient oxygen supply, the formation of dangerous substances is not to be expected.
Borneol, isoborneol, camphor and isobornylacetate can be used as an air freshener in funeral services or sanitary deodorant alone or as a mixture in the following packaging forms:
as coarse or finely ground powder,
as coarse-grained granules,
as a casting or pressing body,
as a liquid or in the form of a solution (eg in ethanol), the rapidly evaporating solvent only serving for uniform and good surface distribution, but not as an active ingredient.
While castings or compacts should improve the ambient air and keep repelling insects, the spreadable material is spread over a larger area for a more intensive effect. However, the effect is better when spraying, pouring or brush application of a solution, e.g. of 55% isoborneol in 25% isobornylacetate and 20% ethanol, since after drying (evaporation of the solvent) a soft film-like coating remains with a strong odor-binding effect.
If an olfactory variation is achieved, the addition of fragrances is possible.
