Description
The invention relates to a method for determining the Nitrogen oxide content in a measuring room, in particular the Combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine according to the The preamble of claim 1. Such a method is from US Pat. No. 4,765,736.
In optimizing the combustion process in Kraftmaschi There is a conflict of objectives. By high combustion Temperatures increase the efficiency, but also the strong temperature-dependent generation of nitrogen oxide he increased. In internal combustion engines with excess air, such as z. As diesel engines or gas turbines, is a catalytic Reduction of the nitrogen oxide (NO) as in the gasoline engine with ge regulated catalyst not possible.
Through a precise temporal and spatial control of the Combustion process, the NO development ge ge to hold. Essential for this is a Knowledge about the course of combustion, for which the NO-Ge halt as well as its spatial and / or temporal distribution offer particularly advantageous information.
In Applied Optics, Vol. 16 (June 1990), p. 2392 bis 2404 is a method for determining the NO distribution in Combustion chamber of an engine indicated la serinduzierte fluorescence exploits.

The invention is advantageous both as a diagnostic tool for development and maintenance as well as for the permanent rain ment of internal combustion engines, the latter called use case of particular importance for transient Operating conditions such as load change, cold start u. ä. is. Particularly advantageous the possibility of Ortsauflö solution of the measurement results within the measuring chamber.

The principle of frequency modulation spectroscopy has been described in the literature, e.g. IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, QE-20, no. 9, ( 1984 ), pp. 1045-1050 with references, and provides a very sensitive detection method. The choice of a harmonic of the NO molecule, before preferably the fourth harmonic with a Absorpti onslinie at about 1.3 microns in conjunction with a III-V semiconductor laser as a light source made possible by the use of technically mature optical waveguides and optical components used for this purpose simple and mechanically insensitive construction, which is particularly suitable for use in motor vehicles.
Essential to frequency modulation spectroscopy is that an amplitude-modulated detector signal occurs, if the absorption or dispersion in the gasge mixed for the two side lines of the modulated lasers mission is different, while a uniform change change by z. B. absorption of soot particles not to egg ner such detector signal modulation leads.
The measurement can be based on transmitted or returned scattered light done. At the transmission contains the detected signal is along the line of sight of Ein Crosspoint and decoupling point integrated influencing of the measuring light in the measuring chamber. A spatial resolution can by separate measurements simultaneously or successively along several different lines of sight and combination of separately obtained measurements are made. meh Other lines of sight can be separated and / or displaceable Einkoppelpunkte and / or decoupling be set points of the measuring space. Under exploitation of symmetries in the measuring space can with few lines of sight to be got along. A high number of line of sight can by means of computer-assisted tomography method to a spatial resolution can be linked.
A spatial resolution can also be crossed by a ray len, where a beam is a powerful stimulus beam and the other beam the actual measurement beam is. The excitation beam changes in the of he illuminated the optical properties of the gas or gas mixture z. B. by Absorptionsssätti or strong effect. By modulation, in particular Pulse modulation of the excitation beam can its influence in Crossing volume lifted out with the measuring beam and dar closed on the composition in the crossing volume be sen.
Another preferred measure for spatially resolved Determination of the NO content consists in the detection of the backscattered light in conjunction with a Runtime analysis. A direct term discrimination such as B. the LIDAR measuring principle requires because of the small Path length differences a very high processing time wall. The runtime evaluation therefore takes place in the after following described preferred embodiments by a coherence length coding or by a time linear sweep of the modulation frequency.
In coherence length coding, as in FIG. 1, an interferometer, e.g. B. a Michelson interferon ter used.
According to the principle of frequency modulation spectroscopy, an RF oscillator generates a high-frequency signal of the modulation frequency fm, which modulates a semiconductor laser HL. This results in the emission spectrum of the laser two at a distance ± fm symmetrical to the main line lying side lines. The modulation frequency is chosen so that one of the two side lines with the Absoptionslinie the NO molecule z. B. coincides for the fourth harmonic. The modulation frequency is preferably in the range of 10 GHz. The high modulation frequency is advantageous for the sensitive detection of pressure-broadened absorption lines.
The light emitted by the laser is transmitted via a Lichtleitfa ser L1 to a fiber optic coupler beam splitter K1 added leads, which leads the light evenly on a to the measuring room dividing fiber L2 and a compensating fiber L3.
The coupling of the fiber L2 to the measuring space R, for example example, a combustion chamber of a piston engine, takes place advantageously via a gradient index (GRIN) lens G1.
The end of the balancing fiber L3, which is about the same Length has like the fiber L2, is mirrored. That from the Measurement space backscattered via the lens G1 in the fiber L2 Light and that after reflection in the equalizing fiber L3 returning light is common across the coupler K1 directed to the fiber L4 and a second fiber optic Coupler K2 supplied with the endflächenverspiegelten L5 fiber, the variable range of sliding mirror Sp and fiber L6 (if necessary with another GRIN lens G2) so like the output fiber L7, a Michelson interferometer order forms.
As long as there is no nitrogen oxide in the measuring room, it remains the balance of the two spectral sidelines as well in the backscattered and running back on the fiber L2 Get light. When NO occurs during the course of Ver This balance is canceled and burned the backscattered light shows one by the NO absorption or dispersion caused amplitude modulation with the Mo modulation frequency fm, which is also on in the off Input fiber L7 of the photodiode PD supplied as a detector Light continues and as a modulation of the electrical output output signal of the photodiode occurs. By demodulation this diode signal with the modulation signal in the mixer M becomes quantitative for the presence of NO in the measurement space obtained evaluable signal. By means of the phase shifter PS can be the absorption (in-phase portion) or the disper (quadrature portion).
A spatial resolution within the measuring space, which has the extension D in a beam direction, by adjusting the coherence length Lc of the semiconductor laser HL he follow. A measurable constructive or canceling interference of the backscattered light with the light returning in the compensating fiber light takes place in the interferometer only if the transit time difference of the interfe rierenden optical signal components is not substantially greater than the coherence length of the laser light. The transit time difference in the interferometer results on the one hand by the position of the movable mirror and on the other from the backscatter position within the measuring chamber. The mirror position is therefore correlated with the backscatter position in the measuring space R. Within a range of the transit time shift determined by the coherence length Lc, the interference leads to ΔL = 0 to a profile of the receiver signal of the photodiode over the mirror shift x with a plurality of minima and maxima ( FIG. 2).
It is essential now the realization that even with a constant mirror position due to turbulence, fluctuations and other rapid changes in the measuring space the receivers gersignal very quickly changes the position on the sketched in Fig. 2 curve and therefore a höherfre quent alternating signal component is included in the output signal. This alternating signal component can be filtered out after demodulation in the mixer M by a high-pass filter HP and serves as a measure of the presence of nitrogen oxide in the correlated by the mirror position x portion of the measuring space.
This gives you the opportunity to move through of the mirror and evaluation of the alternating signal components in the demodulated signal a spatially resolved determination of the NO content. The coherence length of the laser and thus the spatial resolution is in certain Limits by measures known per se for line pulp Adjustment possible with lasers. The coherence length is for a line width of about 10 GHz at around 3 mm.
In the method with time linearly modified modulation Frequency is the modulation frequency within a ge compared to the amount of modulation frequency small range df changes at a constant rate, for example between 10 GHz and 10.5 GHz (df = 0.5 GHz) in 100 μsec.
The resulting sawtooth waveform of the modulation frequency is outlined in FIG. 4B. Since the frequency range df is also small compared to the width of the absorption lines, the absorption within this range can be assumed to be constant.
The time-varying modulation frequency fmv is sketched as in Fig. 3, for example, by mixing a fixed modulation frequency fmo (eg 10 GHz) from a Festfre frequency generator FG with the tuned frequency (eg 0 to 0.5 GHz) of a controllable oscillator VCO generated in a mixer MF. This modulation frequency fmv is superposed on the DC voltage control signal of the semiconductor laser HL. The modulated light of the laser is fed via a Fa ser L11, a coupler K3 and a fiber L12 the measuring space R. The rückge scattered from the measuring space in the fiber L12 light is fed via the coupler K3 and an output fiber L13 a photodiode PD as a detector. The electrical output signal of the detector is set in a further mixer MD with the modulation frequency fmv vice. Because of the time-linear change of the modulation frequency results in the mixture in MD a Signalan part at a difference frequency .DELTA.f, which depends on the transit time r of the optical signal and thus the location x of the backscattering within the measuring space R. The duration of the electrical signals and the optical signals in the Fa fibers is to be taken into account and preferably to compensate. By spectral analysis of the output signal of the mixer MD can be obtained from the difference frequency ## f pending measurement signal and from a determination of the nitrogen oxide content depending on the location x are made within the measuring space. This variant of the method is partly similar to the FM-CW method known from radar technology, so that details of the modulation and evaluation can be taken partly from this area.
