Abstract

Fe, Ni and Co rods are used (1) as electrodes (cathodes) for heavy water electrolysis in energy prodn. by cold fusion; and (ii) in pickling in deuterium acids (Dcl, Df, DBr, D2SO4, DNO3) and their dil. aq. sdms. for energy recovery by .-fusion'. The rods pref. have an austenitic structure, may be hollow and may contain up to 30 wt.% of addns e.g. Cr, Tr; Zr and Mn to inhibit pickling embrittlement. ADVANTAGE - Energy is recovered in electrolytic and pickling processes by deuteruim diffusion into the crystal lattice of the Fe, Ni or Co and fusion to tritrium or helium wiht accompanying heat prodn.

Description

It is known that in the electrolysis of heavy water ( 2 H 2 O) the resulting deuterium ( 2 H) diffuses in a palladium electrode (cathode) and fuses in whole or in part to 3 H, with energy gain.

This method of energy production is because of the high Pd price uneconomical. Also the process of electrolysis is uneconomical.

The present invention circumvents these difficulties by the surprising finding that the electrode (cathode) is Fe, Co or Ni, optionally with additives which increase the 2 H resistance, such as Cr, Ti, Zr, Mn and others (resistance to heavy hydrogen), used.

B. in 2HCl, 2HF, 2HBr, 2H2SO4, 2HNO3, unverdünnt oder verdünnt mit 2H2O.The present invention allows a further simplification by eliminating the electrolysis and replaces a simple pickling process z. B. in 2 HCl, 2 HF, 2 HBr, 2 H 2 SO 4 , 2 HNO 3 , undiluted or diluted with 2 H 2 O.

Both during electrolysis and pickling, 2 H migrates into the crystal lattice of the Fe, Ni, and Co steels and melts to 3 H (tritium) or He under the appropriate heat release.

The heat can e.g. B. from the inside of a hollow electrode or from a hollow pickling rod made of the metals according to the invention or alloys of the Fe group (Fe, Ni, Co) without pressure or with liquid or gaseous heat carriers are removed under pressure will.

When pickling, the fusion heat development z. B. by ver different concentration of heavy hydrogen acids be managed.
