Die Erfindung betrifft saugfähige Produkte, insbesondere saugfähige Verbände, Binden und Gebrauchsartikel mit
verbesserter Aufsaugung und Zurückhaltung von Flüssigkeiten und Verfahren zu ihrer Herstellung« Die Erfindung
ist insbesondere auf Gebrauchsartikel wie Menstruationstampons, Damenbinden, Saugrollen und andere saugfähige
Produkte für Zahnärzte sowie andere Materialien, die Körperexsudate und vom Körper gebildete Flüssigkeiten
aufsaugen und festhalten, z„B, Windeln, Wundverbände,
Unterlegkissen für Krankenhäuser, Tupfer, Operationstücher, Bandagen usw. gerichtet.
Baumwolle, Reyon, Holzzellstoff und ähnliche natürliche
und synthetische Cellulosematerialien werden seit langem in großem Umfange für die Herstellung von Flüssigkeiten
aufsaugenden und festhaltenden Verbänden und ähnlichen Produkten verwendet und erwiesen sich für viele Zwecke als
befriedigende Es wurden jedoch seit langem zahlreiche andere Materialien untersucht und als möglicher Ersatz
oder Verbesserungen für diese cellulosischen Materialien in Erwärgung gezogen.

Beispielsweise beschreibt die USA-Patentschrift 3 005 456 die Verwendung von Carboxyalkylcellulose,
insbesondere Oarboxymethylcellulose und Carboxyäthylcellulose insbesondere für Menstruationstampons,, Es ist jedoch
zu bemerken, daß die Verwendung dieser Carboxyalkyläther
von Cellulose normalerweise auf solche Äther begrenzt ist, die einen maximalen Substitutionsgrad von etwa 0,35 Carboxyalkylresten
pro Anhydroglucoseeinheit in der Cellulose haben» Jenseits dieses Substitutionsgrades pflegt die
Carboxymethylcellulose übermäßig wasserlöslich zu werden,,
Es wird angenommen, daß hierdurch die Saugfähigkeit und das Festhaltevermögen für Flüssigkeiten auf einen äußerst
geringen, unerwünschten Wertf fällt0
Es wird angenommen, daß wasserlösliche Carboxymethylcellulose mit einem mittleren Substitutionsgrad von mehr
als 0,35 bei Berührung mit einer Flüssigkeit schnell oberflächlich benetzt wird, schnell quillt und agglomeriert

Es wurde nun gefunden, daß es durch eine geregelte Wärmebehandlung
von wasserlöslichen Carboxyalkyläthern von Cellulose in Faserform, z.B. Carboxymethylcellulose, bei
ausgewählten erhöhten Temperaturen und für bestimmte Zeiten möglich ist, die Carboxymethylcellulosefaser so
zu modifizieren, daß sie wasserunlöslich wird und im gepreßten Zustand ausgezeichnetes Saug- und Festhaltevermögen
für Flüssigkeiten bei allen Substitutionsgraden aufweist, ohne eine Neigung zu Agglomerierung, Zusammenbacken,
Gelbildung oder Aufhebung der Dochtwirkung zu

zeigen. Als Ergebnis erwies sich faserförmige Carboxymethylcellulose
mit Substitutionsgraden von 0,40, 0,70, 1,00, 1,30, 1,40 und höher als äußerst gut geeignet zum
Aufsaugen und Pesthalten von Flüssigkeiten«
In den Abbildungen und in der folgenden Beschreibung
werden "bevorzugte Konstruktionen und Ausführungsformen
von Gebrauchsartikeln, denen die Erfindung zu Grunde liegt, dargestellt bzw« beschrieben»

Die Erfindung wird nachstehend insbesondere in Zusammenhang mit Carboxymethylcellulosefasern als Material zum

Aufsaugen und Zurückhalten von Flüssigkeiten in einem
bestimmten Produkt, nämlich einem Menstruationstampon,
beschrieben, jedoch geschieht dies lediglich zur Veranschaulichung.
Die Erfindung ist nicht hierauf begrenzt, sondern in gleicher Weise auch auf die anderen hier genannten
Gebrauchsartikel sowie auf Fasern anderer Äther von Cellulose, z.B. Carboxyäthylcellulose, Carboxymethylhydroxyäthylcellulose
oder andere Celluloseäther-, die den Carboxyalkylrest enthalten, oder, genauer gesagt, auf ihre
Natriumsalze anwendbar..Hierauf wird nachstehend näher
eingegangen.
Fig. 1 zeigt eine Damenbinde 10 mit einer oberen Schicht
und einer unteren Schicht 14 für die Aufsaugung und Zurückhaltung von Flüssigkeiten. Zwischen diesen Schichten ist
ein gepreßtes Faserkissen 16 angeordnet. Die oberen und unteren Schichten 12 und 14 sowie das gepreßte Faserkissen
16 sind mit einer äußeren textlien Hülle 18 aus einem Faservlies oder einem Gewebe wie Gaze oder einem Gewirke
umhüllt, das in üblicher Weise über die Enden der Binde hinaus verlängert ist, wodurch die üblichen Befestigungsbänder 19 gebildet werden. Ein solcher Aufbau ist ein Beispiel
für eine Ausführungsform einer Damenbinde und soll hier in erster Linie die Anwendung der Erfindung auf Damenbinden
veranschaulichen. Eine Begrenzung hierauf ist nicht beabsichtigt. Beispielsweise werden zahlreiche Damenbinden
und andere Saugkissen für diese Zwecke ohne die üblichen Befestigungsbänder hergestellt und mit anderen Mitteln in
ihrer Lage gehalten. Alle diese Schutzartikel lassen sich in der gleichen Weise durch die Erfindung verbessern.
Fig. 2 zeigt ein Faserkissen 20 mit mehreren parallelen
geprägten Bereichen 22, die getrennte Teile aus verdichteten Fasermassen innerhalb des Kissens bilden. Dieses
Kissen 22 kann in den Kern von saugfähigen Produkten, z.B. Damenbinden der in Fig. 1 dargestellten Art, einge-

arbeitet werden, wobei es eine oder mehrere der Schichten 12, 14 oder 16 bildet. Ebenso kann das geprägte Kissen
in die aus saugfähigem Material bestehenden Kerne von Windeln, chirurgischen Verbänden, Bettunterlagen in
Krankenhäusern, Tupfern, Operationstüchern, Bandagen uodgl«
eingearbeitet werden» Die parallelen geprägten Bereiche 22 im Kissen 20 sind lediglich ein Beispiel einer möglichen
Ausführungsfornio Beliebige gewünschte Prägemuster können eingepresst werden. Selbst eine Prägung über die
gesamte Fläche durch Kalandrieren ist möglich, wobei die Oberfläche des Kissens 20 praktisch mit keinem Muster
versehen wird,,
In Fig „3 ist ein Menstruationstampon mit einem hohlzylindrischen
Behälter oder Applikator 32 und einem kleineren, zylindrischen, konzentrisch angeordneten Kolben oder
Ejektor 34, der verschiebbar im Applikator 32 angeordnet ist, dargestellt« Eine zylindrisch geformte, verdichtete,
Flüssigkeit aufsaugende und zurückhaltende Fasermasse oder ein Kissen 36 ist in den Applikator 32 eingelegt
und läßt sich durch Einschieben des Kolbens 34 in den Applikator 32 so herausschieben, daß das Saugkissen 36
in eine Körperhöhle eingeführt wird, wo es sich den Konturen des Körpers anpasst und die Menstruationsflüssigkeiten
aufnimmt, aufsaugt und zurückhält, J3ine Schnur 38

die nach dem Verfahren gemäß der Erfindung wärmebehandelt, modifiziert und verbessert

vor, wie sie in der TJSA-Patentschrift 3 005 456 beschrieben

Carboxymethylcellulose ist zwar im allgemeinen mit Sub*·
stitutionsgraden bis nur etwa 1,4 im Handel erhältlich, jedoch werden in der Fachliteratur Verfahren zur Herstellung
von Carboxymethylcellulose in Faserform aus Baumwollinters mit Substitutionsgraden bis 2,50 und 2,77
in einer mehrstufigen Carboxymethylierung beschriebene Eine Beschreibung dieser Verfahren findet sich in
"Carbohydrate Chemistry", Band III (Cellulose) (1963), Seite 322-327.
Die vorstehend genannte Veröffentlichung beschreibt die Verwendung von Baumwollinters als Ausgangsmaterial für
die Herstellung von Carboxymethylcellulose0 Natürlich
können auch andere Ausgangsmaterialien, insbesondere Reyonfasern und Holzzellstoff, verwendet werden»

Carboxyäthyloellulose wird im Grunde nach dem gleichen
Mechanismus wie Carboxymethylcellulose erhalten, außer
daß Monochlorpropionsäure und Natriumhydroxyd an Stelle
von Monochloressigsäure und Natriumhydroxyd verwendet
werden.

Carboxymethylhydroxyäthylcellulose wird hergestellt, indem
zuerst die Hydroxyäthylierungsreaktion und anscbliessend die Carboxymethylierungsreaktion durchgeführt wird.
Eine Betrachtung der vorstehenden Strukturformeln zeigt, daß zwar die Ausdrücke "Carboxymethylcellulose","Carboxyäthylcellulose"
und "Carboxymetbylhydroxyäthylcellulose" hier gebraucht werden, jedoch ein genauerer, aber längerer
Ausdruck darauf verweisen sollte, daß sie im Handel erhältlioh sind und normalerweise als Natriumsalz dieser
chemischen Verbindungen verwendet werden. Andere Alkalisalze, die im Handel nicht so leicht erhältlich sind,
aber ebenso gut verwendbar sind, sind die Kalium-, Lithiua-,
Rubidium- und Cäsiumsalze.
Die Pasern von Carboxymethylcellulose werden gemäß der
Erfindung modifiziert, indem sie für eine Zeit von etwa 1 bis 20 Stunden bei einer Temperatur von vorzugsweise
etwa 120° bis 17O0C gehalten werden. Die Reaktion ist
exotherm. Zwar kann bei niedrigeren Temperaturen "bis hinab zu etwa 1100C gearbeitet werden, jedoch muß die
Dauer der Wärmebehandlung dann auf etwa 30 Stunden oder mehr verlängert werden. Dies ist wirtschaftlich unvorteilhaft.
Ebenso können höhere Temperaturen von etwa 2000C oder sogar Temperaturen, die sich der Bräunungstemperatur von
etwa 2260C nähern, für eine Dauer von nur etwa 10 oder
15 Minuten oder weniger angewandt werden, jedoch ist dies ein schwieriger Prozeß, der genauere Kontrollen und Regelungen
erfordert, um örtliche Überhitzung oder andere schädigende Einflüsse zu vermeiden.
Die Wärmebehandlung kann unter Druck durchgeführt werden, wobei sich die Temperatur- und Zeitbedingungen in bekannter
Weise entsprechend ändern.
Die bemerkenswerteste Veränderung besteht darin, daß die Carboxymethyloellulosefasern nach der Wärmebehandlung
wasserunlöslich werden und zwar in Wasser um mehrere 100$ quellen, hierbei jedoch nicht das charakteristische

schlüpfrige Gefühl von "benetzter, unbehandelter Carboxymethylcellulose
ausbilden. Sowohl die unbehandelten als auch die wärmebehandelten Carboxymethylcellulosefasern
sind in 6$iger Uatriumhydroxydlösung lösliche Die Bräunungstemperatur
der wärmebehandelten Carboxymethylcellulosefaser
bleibt im Bereich von etwa 226 bis 2280G, und
die Verkohlungstemperatur ändert sich ebenfalls nicht wesentlich gegenüber dem ursprünglichen Bereich von etwa
252 bis 2530C bei der unbehandelten Form. Die wärmebehandelte
Carboxymethylcellulose hat ein spezifisches Gewicht von etwa 1,59 g/ml„
Die erhaltenen wärmebehandelten Fasern zeigen insbesondere im gepressten Zustand bei Behandlung mit Wasser bei
Raumtemperatur eine riesige Absorption und Zurückhaltung von Wasser bei gleichzeitiger ausgezeichneter Quellung,
jedoch ohne die geringsten Anzeichen einer Agglomerierung,
Gelbildung, Zusammenbackung oder Zerstörung der Dochtwirkung O
Wenn beispielsweise faserförmige Carboxymethylcellulose
vom Substitutionsgrad 0,8 verwendet wird, verliert das wärmebehandelte Material bei Behandlung mit Wasser bei
Raumtemperatur nicht seine Faserform, obwohl es um mehrere 100$ quilltο Die gequollene Fasermasse fühlt sich nicht
schlüpfrig oder gelatineartig an, wie es für unbehandelte Carboxymethylcellulose mit ähnlichem Substitutionsgrad
bei Behandlung mit Wasser bei Raumtemperatur charakteristisch isto
Wenn gepresste Kissen aus der wärmbehandelten Carboxymethylcellulose
vom Substitutionsgrad 0,8 bei Raumtemperatur in Wasser gelegt werden, zeigen sie eine äußerst
hohe Aufsaugung und Dochtwirkung. Gepresste Kissen aus Carboxymethylcellulose vom Substitutionsgrad 0,8, die
nicht wärmebehandelt worden ist, saugen, wenn sie bei Raumtemperatur in Wasser gelegt werden, auf Grund der

Der genaue Mechanismus der Modifikation der Carboxyalkyl-Cellulose
ist noch nicht völlig zweifelsfrei geklärt, jedoch wird angenommen, daß ein gewisser Grad von innerer
Veresterung zwischen den Carboxytesten der Carboxyalkyl- '
reste und den verbleibenden nicht umgesetzten Hydroxylgruppen der Hauptcellobioseeinheit oder Anhydroglucoseeinheit
stattfindet. Als solche kann sie allgemein als eine vernetzende, innere Veresterung zwischen benachbarten
Ketten der wiederkehrenden Cellobioseeinheiten oder Anhydroglucoseeinheiten
eingestuft werden.
Für eine typische Einheit einer solchen vernetzten, innen
veresterten Carboxymethylcellulose (mittlerer Substitu-'

Die Werte in Tabelle II zeigen, daß der Tampon aus den nicht wärmebehandelten Carboxymethylcellulosefasern
(Substitutionsgrad 0,8) ein. korrigiertes Potentialverhältnis von nur 0,39 hat, während der wärmebehandelte Tampon
aus CarlDoxymethylcellulosefasern (Substitutionsgrad 0,8) ein korrigiertes Potentialverhältnis von 9,24- hat. Dies
stellt eine fast 24-fache Steigerung des Saugvermögens dar.
Ein Vergleich mit den beiden Vergleichsproben aus Baumwollfasern
zeigt, daß der wärmebehandelte Tampon aus Carboxymethylcellulosefasern ein korrigiertes Potentialverhältnis
von 9,24 hat im Vergleich su nur 2,66 beim Tampon aus Baumwollfasern. Dies entspricht einer Steige-

gegenüber Wasser hat sich veränderte Die wärmebehandelten
Carboxymethylcellulosefasern sind nunmehr wasserunlöslich und alkalilöslich (6$iges Natriumhydroxyd). Sie haben
ausgezeichnetes Saugvermögen für Wasser (weit besser als Baumwoll-, Reyon- und unbehandelte Carboxymethylcellulosefasern).
Sie agglomerieren nicht, backen nicht zusammen und bilden kein Gel, das den Durchgang von Wasser in den
Kern der Fasermasse verhindert. Sie vermögen auf mehrere "\0Όο/ο zu quellen» Bei Einwirkung von Druck fließen die
wärmebehandelten Carboxymethylcellulosefasern nicht wie
ein Gel, vielmehr haben sie das Aussehen von teilweise gequollenen lasern» Dagegen fließen nicht wärmebehandelte
Carboxymethylcellulosefasern bei Einwirkung von Druck wie ein GeI0
Ein halbquantitativer Test wird durchgeführt, um die relative Saugfähigkeit für Flüssigkeit und das Rückhaltevermögen
für Flüssigkeit von 1) unbehandelten Carboxymethylcellulosefasern
(Substitutionsgrad 0,8), 2) unbehandelten Baumwollfasern und 3) wärmebehandelten Carboxymethylcellulosefasern
(Substitutionsgrad 0,8) zu ermittelno Die Ergebnisse sind in Tabelle VI genannt«

Die Werte in Tabelle VI zeigen, daß die Probe, die die wärmebehandelten Carboxymethylcellulosefasern (Substitutionsgrad
0,8) enthält, ursprünglich die 2,25-fache Flüssigkeitsmenge gegenüber der Vergleichsprobe aus Baumwollfasern
aufsaugt und dann die 6-fache Flüssigkeitsmenge gegenüber der Vergleichsprobe aus Baummwollfasern
zurückhält«, Die unbehandelten Carboxymethylcellulosefasern
(Substitutionsgrad 0,8) waren löslich und zeigten keine wirksam Aufsaugung.
Es ist nicht wesentlich, daß die saugfähigen Materialien nur wärmebehandelte Carboxyalkylcellulosefasern enthalten.
In vielen Fällen werden sogar Gemische der Carboxyalkylcellulosefasern mit saugfähigen Fasern aus anderen Materialien
bevorzugt» Diese anderen saugfähigen Fasern oder Materialien können in Anteilen von nur etwa 10 Gew„-$ bis

hinauf zu etwa 90 Gewo~$ einbezogen werden, wobei die
bevorzugten Bereiche zwischen etwa 25 und 75 Gew«-$ liegene Als andere Fasern und Materialien können beispielsweise
Baumwolle, Reyon, Holzzellstoff, zerkleinertes Seidenpapier oder anderes Papier einbezogen werden0
Falls gewünscht, können andere Materialien und andere Fasern, die nicht unbedingt saugfähig für Flüssigkeiten
sind, in ähnlichen Gewichtsanteilen (die im vorstehenden Absatz genannt wurden) einbezogen werden, um ganz bestimmte
Eigenschaften auszubilden« Als Beispiele solcher anderen Materialien und Fasern sind unbehandelte Carboxymethylcellulose,
Celluloseester, Z0B. Celluloseacetat, Polyamidfasern beispielsweise aus Nylon 6, Nylon 6,6 und
Nylon 12, Polyesterfasern, z.B. solche- der Handelsbezeichnung "Dacron" und "Kodel", und Acrylfasern, Z0B.
die Fasern der Handelsbezeichnung "Dynel" und "Orion", zu
nennen. Ferner kann im Rahmen der Erfindung die wärmebehandelte modifizierte Carboxyalkylcellulose einen Teil
von komplizierter geformten saugfähigen Materialien bildeno
Beispielsweise kann sie als konzentrisch und zentral angeordneter, gepresster Kern von Menstruationstampons
verwendet und von einer zylindrischen Hülle aus anderen saugfähigen Fasern oder Materialien umgeben werden0 Sie
kann ferner als zentral angeordneter, gepresster Kern des Saugkörpers von Damenbinden oder Windeln oder saugfähigen
Unterlagen dienen,. Eine weitere Möglichkeit ist ihre Verwendung in mehrschichtigen, laminierten, gepreßten
Materialien mit anderen Materialien oder Fasern in saugfähigen Wundverbänden und Produkten«

Claims (9)
1)] Saugfähige Artikel, insbesondere Verbandmaterialien
und Binden, mit verbesserter Saugfähigkeit für Flüssigkeiten, gekennzeichnet durch einen gepreßten
Körper, der aus saugfähigen Pasern eines Alkalisalzes von Carboxyalkylcellulose mit einem mittleren Substitutionsgrad
von mehr als etwa 0,35 Carbpxyalky!resten
pro Anhydroglucoserest in der Cellulose besteht, wobei die saugfähigen Fasern des Alkalisalzes der Carboxyalkylcellulose
einer Wärmebehandlung, durch die sie in Wasser bei Raumtemperatur unlöslich, jedoch guellbar
geworden sind, unterworfen worden sind.
2) Saugfähige Artikel nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß der saugfähige Körper Teile enthält, die auf eine Dichte im Bereich von etwa 0,75 bis 0,85 g/cm
gepresst sind.
3) Saugfähige Artikel nach Anspruch 1 und 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß der saugfähige Körper aus einem Gemisch der saugfähigen Pasern eines Alkalisalzes von
Oarboxyalkylcellulose mit anderen natürlichen oder synthetischen saugfähigen oder nicht saugfähigen Pasern
bestehto
4) Saugfähige Artikel nach Anspruch 1 bis 3, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß das Gemisch zu etwa 1.0 bis 90 Gew„-$ aus saugfähigen Pasern eines Alkalisalzes von Carboxyalkylcellulose
besteht«,
5) Saugfähige Artikel nach Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß das Gemisch zu etwa 25 bis 75 Gewe-$ aus
saugfähigen Pasern eines Alkalisalzes von Carboxyalkylcellulose bestehto
6.) Saugfähige Artikel nach Anspruch 1 bis 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet,
daß sie als saugfähige Pasern aus einem

Alkalisalz von Garboxyalkylcellulose Fasern aus Natriumcar"boxymethylcellulose mit einem mittleren
Suhstitutionsgrad von mehr als 0,35 Ms etwa 1,4 enthalten.
7) Saugfähige Artikel nach Anspruch 1 in Form von Katamenialvorrichtungen.
8) Saugfähige Artikel nach Anspruch 1 "bis 7 in Form von
Menstruationstampon, die den gepressten Körper im Saugkern des Tampons enthaltene
