Abstract
Description
The useful life of artificial joints, z. B. Hip joint prostheses is limited. The reasons for the need for prosthesis removal and reimplantations are loosening, dislocation, fractures and infections. By far the most common cause of an implant failure with subsequent replacement surgery mentioned in the literature is the abrasion-induced dissolution of the bone tissue (osteolysis) in the hip joint. Abrasion particles originating from the artificial joint or remaining bone part cause foreign body reactions in the body tissue and result in resorption of the bone, ultimately causing the loosening and failure of the prostheses. These wear particles arise at all interfaces of the joint components as well as between bone and implant. Abrasion particles are mainly due to the friction of the components on each other (also called sliding pair), which are made of metallic and ceramic materials.
Artificial joint replacement is made in the vast majority of cases of metal, ceramics or plastics or combinations of these materials. To prevent the sliding between these components, some additional plastics are used. With the currently used sliding bearings, with the exception of ceramics, significant amounts of abrasion material are still produced. The ceramic-ceramic sliding pair is characterized by a high wear resistance. However, the risk of breakage of ceramic components is significantly increased due to the lower fracture toughness of this material.
Therefore, it is the object of the invention to provide a novel surface structure of artificial joints, which have significantly lower wear due to their tribological surface properties.
Die Unteransprüche geben die vorteilhafte Ausgestaltung der Erfindung an.The object is achieved with the features of the main claim. The dependent claims indicate the advantageous embodiment of the invention.
According to the invention, one surface of the prosthetic part of the joint, which interacts frictionally with a complementary surface of the other part, is provided at least partially with microstructured depressions. Preferably, the region of the microstructure comprises the entire surface of the articular surface communicating with the complementary part and / or both of the articular surfaces. However, the depressions according to the invention may also be limited to a smaller area of the joint, for. B. on the interfaces of the joint. On the one hand, such a hip joint prosthesis provided with depressions designed, for example, as grooves ensures a better distribution of the synovial fluid on the surface and thus improves the gliding ability of the complementary surfaces. In addition, in the recesses abrasion particles, which arise in the friction of the surfaces to each other, collect in the wells and preferably transported away direction and thus prevent progression of the abrasion process
The depressions formed as grooves are designed such that they are 10-150 μm deep and 25-250 μm wide and preferably form geometric patterns such as squares, chessboard, spirals, dimples, diamonds, diamonds or screw structures. Joint surfaces with curved paths (eg spiral) have proven particularly advantageous, the depth of the grooves being 50 μm and the width of the grooves being 25 μm.
Joint surfaces, which form a checkered pattern-like structure whose width and depth are identical, also show a low degree of abrasion.
The microstructures according to the invention on the prosthesis surface can be produced by means of laser processing. It is also possible to etch the grooves in the surface or to coat by spraying.
