Description

智能电子节目指南存储器管理系统和方法
本发明涉及涉及一种存储器管理系统和方法,且更具体地说是涉及用一种智能系统和方法,用于根据存储在电视电子节目指南(EPG)存储器中的节目安排信息的当前使用,来分配有限的电视EPG存储器资源。
已知的EPG系统给电视观众提供了形式方便的屏幕上节目安排信息。在所谓的交互EPG中,EPG的操作处于用户的控制之下,因而用户可以以任何顺序来浏览安排信息,从屏幕上菜单来选择当前或未来所要看的节目,订购收费节目和根据需要进行其他有用的操作。在Bennington等人递交的、序号为08/119367的、题目为“电子电子节目指南安排系统和方法”的共同未决申请(以下称为“Bennington等人”),描述了一种先进的EPG系统的一个例子,该申请在此被作为参考文献。
多数的EPG是按照以下方式进行操作的:节目安排信息,有还有应用和/或系统软件,通过广播、电缆、直接的卫星或某些其他的适当传输形式,被传输传送到位于观众的房子上的设备(通常是“顶置盒”)。该顶置盒包含有存储器,从而能够保持节目安排信息以在将来进行观看。存储在顶置盒中的节目安排信息被定期地更新(例如以连续、每天、每周、每两周的方式)。在顶置盒中的一个编程微控制器与观众的电视机相配合,以显示存储的节目安排信息并响应于用户发出的信号实施EPG的其他功能。这些功能取决于具体的EPG的先进程度。
在其中安排信息被存储在用户房子的设备中的存储器中的所有这种EPG中,存储器的存储容量是主要的考虑。存储器的大小将决定观众在任何一个时刻所能够观看到的节目信息的量,因而直接影响着EPG对观众的感觉价值。成本和实际尺寸的考虑对顶置盒的存储容量产生了实际的限制。因此,必须有某种机制来管理这种有限的资源,从而使EPG对用户的感觉价值达到最大。
在此方面,象在某些已经提出的EPG中那样简单地删除变得过时的节目信息在观众服务区中为每一个可得到的频道的新节目安排信息提供空间,在使价值对观众来说达到最大来说,并不是最有效的。对于给定的观众来说最有价值的节目信息,一般地说不等于信息所覆盖的时段中所有可得到的频道的完整安排。例如,用户没有购买的保险频道的安排信息,对用户的价值就比例如主要频道(例如ABC、CBS、NBC、CNN)的安排信息小。如果EPG允许观众把一或多个“最喜欢的频道”装载到EPG中,观众显然将对这些频道的安排更为感兴趣。
因此,需要一种智能EPG存储器管理系统—它能够考虑到存储在EPG中的各种节目信息的不同的价值,从而使EPG对观众的价值达到最大。对这种需要的一种已经提出的解决方案,在授予Hallenbeck(以下称为"Hallenbeck")的美国专利第5,038,211号中得到了讨论。在Hallenbeck的EPG系统中,安排信息在三个单独的传输中被传输给了观众,其第一个被EPG中的用户配置信息预过滤器用来判定是存储还是放弃随后的传输中的信息。
然而,EPG存储器管理的这种选择接收方案有至少两个缺点。第一,安排信息的传输必须利用专门的协议来进行,这使EPG提供者侧的服务更为复杂。第二个缺点,是预过滤器不能给节目安排信息分配效用的中介值。通过对效用进行初始的二进制确定(有价值—存储;无价值—拒绝),Hallenbeck的EPG可阻止潜在的有用信息到达观众。另外,Hallenbeck的预过滤没有考虑节目信息的价值通常随着时间而改变这一事实,因而在某些不适当的情况下对信息的未来效用作出了超前的判定。换言之,就Hallenbeck的EPG在接收到送给观众的节目信息时对未来的价值进行评价方面,其预过滤器方案可能拒绝太多的信息。
因而本发明的目的,是提供一种EPG存储器管理系统,它不需要特别的传输协议。本发明的进一步的目的,是实施一种EPG—它在开始时把观众服务区域的安排信息存储起来,并随后允许该节目信息根据其当前的效用来取一个连续范围的值,从而能够在系统需要自由的存储空间时实时地识别和删除存储在存储器中的最无价值的信息。
借助一种存储器管理系统和方法—其中节目安排信息在单个的传输中被传送给观众,实现了根据本发明的这些和其他的目的。用于相应的时间的节目安排被初始存储在EPG存储器中,因而能够被观众所取用。在下一个安排更新之前,本发明的系统执行两级存储器“内务处理”操作,以为更新的信息腾出存储器空间。首先,系统进行存储器的高级扫描,以识别过时的安排信息(过时的节目)。如果在此扫描之后,没有足够的存储器用于下一个更新,则系统进行一个二级存储器“筛选”操作—其中根据预定的规则对安排信息进行优先化,以确定信息对每一个观众的当前价值。系统随后按照价值增加的顺序从价值最小的信息开始删除安排信息,并继续至获得了足够的存储器空间来存储安排更新。

在任何适当的EPG平台上都可以实施本发明的系统和方法—该平台包括:用于存储节目安排信息的存储装置、用于根据本发明的各种存储器管理功能来执行存储器管理软件程序的编程处理器装置、以及用于跟踪当前日期和时间的时钟。本发明的程序可被存储在单独的存储装置或用于安排信息的同一存储装置的单独部分中。用于执行本发明的步骤的编码和程序对于本领域的技术人员来说是显而易见的。

从对本发明的概述开始是有利的,这种概述是以图1的流程图的形式给出的。本发明的主要功能,是在用于安排信息存储的存储器中产生出解脱空间。这是通过所谓的数据库“家政管理”程序100来实现的。该家政管理程序将在需要的任何时间被启动,以获得自由的存储器空间。在本发明的某些最佳实施例中,该家政管理功能至少在每一次节目安排信息更新之前进行。根据EPG的具体需要,该家政管理程序被启动的次数可多可少。例如,在本发明的某些最佳实施例中,每天、每周、或每个其他的时段,就给用户送去完整的新安排,而在完整的安排更新之间不送数据。在这些实施例中,不需要在下一个安排之前执行家政管理程序。在其他的最佳实施例中,系统并不等候到可传输新的完整安排才更新EPG。相反地,对节目安排的部分更新被连续地送到用户。在这种“周期”模式的操作中,当传输了一个安排中的所有数据时,对安排数据更新的传输立即得到开始。随后的每一次传输都包括了对已经存储在EPG中的安排信息的更新和所覆盖的时段结束的新数据。从上次传输以来过时的安排数据不被传输。由于EPG持续地接收到新的记录,家政管理程序被启动的次数要多于其中每天或其他时段传输完整的新节目安排的实施例中的次数。
一旦家政管理程序得到启动110,系统开始搜索安排数据库,以寻找过时的记录。为此,发现和删除子程序120扫描各个节目记录,以识别其时间和日期数据表明其已经过时的节目记录。所有这样的记录都被加上标签并被从节目安排数据库中删除。随后,系统判定是否已经有了足够的存储器空间来存储进入的安排信息。在此子程序130,系统将可用的存储器空间与预定的存储器效用价值相比较—系统认为可用的自由存储器空间对于在此价值来说是不够的。如果没有足够的可用自由空间存储器,系统随后启动筛选子程序140—其中如在下面详细描述的包含在未过时节目记录中的信息被分成优先等级并根据其对观众的当前价值而得到删除。筛选程序140在已经删除了足够的信息之后停止,以容纳将要存储的新安排。在此,家政管理程序结束150,以准备在需要时再次得到启动。
现在说明刚讨论的各个子程序的详细步骤。在本发明的所示实施例中,节目安排记录包括日期、节目开始时刻和各个安排的节目播放的持续时间场。对在一天开始并在另一天结束的节目播放,日期场被设定为节目结束的日期。在一个播放的日期文件大于当前的日期的情况下,发现和删除程序120保持与该播放有关的数据,作为与未来的节目安排相应的记录。当日期场小于当前日期时,节目记录对应于过时的节目且与播放有关的数据因而被删除。如果日期等于当前日期,系统将节目开始时刻和持续时间场加在一起,并将该和与当前时间进行比较。随后根据该比较的结果而删除或保持各个播放的数据。发现和删除程序120按照这种方式进行,直到整个节目安排数据库都已经得到扫描且过时的记录得到清除。在一个具体节目的所有播放都已经过时的情况下,系统删除与该节目相应的所有记录(如将要在后面描述的,它包含与该节目有关的其他信息)。如果EPG系统允许存储对时间敏感的消息,这些也能够以上述方式得到删除。一般地说,根据本发明,存储在EPG中的、可能随着时间的过去而过时的任何信息都能够得到扫描和删除。
在系统第一次通过了节目安排数据库之后,它随后判定是否已经释放了足够的存储器空间以容纳进入的数据。比较程序130通过获取一个事先存储的存储器效用参数来进行该工作,而该参数能够根据具体的系统要求而被设定为任何值。在最佳实施例中,该效用参数被选择为至少与能够在一个节目安排更新中送出的最大信息量所占用的存储器空间一样地大。以此方式,EPG能够接收相应的时段的完整的节目安排。该存储器利用参数可以被设定为根据具体EPG系统的要求的任意值。例如,在EPG接受较小(例如小于整个节目安排)的数据量的情况下,存储器利用参数可以被状态为并在EPG必须在一个更新中容纳整个节目安排的情况下低的值。在上述最佳实施例中—其中逐步的更新被连续地送给用户,系统根据它希望在下一个安排更新中支持的新节目安排数据的小时数来设定存储器利用参数。如果系统判定有足够的自由存储器,则家政管理程序100结束。另一方面,如果过时记录的删除未能释放预定的效用参数所确定的足够的存储器空间,则必须启动筛选程序140。
本发明的筛选程序140执行一种信息优先划分功能,对与各个节目记录有关的信息的当前值量化,从而能够给价值最小的信息加上标签并实时删除之。本发明的该解释性的例子中的节目安排记录除了标明节目名称的数据之外还包括:节目广播时间和该节目所在的频道、与节目的完整标题(长标题)相应的数据和节目内容的概述(信息记录)—它们都是对给定的节目只需要存储一次。其他信息记录也可作为节目记录的一部分而得到存储。然而,为了说明的目的,只考虑长标题和信息记录。应该理解的是,根据本发明,与安排中的一个节目有关的所有类型的数据都能够得到评价和优先划分。
与各个节目有关的长标题和信息记录,虽然是有用的,却不是识别节目及其相应的播放次数所需要的,且倾向于占用大量的系统存储器。在本示例性实施例中的筛选程序的目的,就是识别数据库中的长标题和信息记录,从而可以删除该数据。以此方式,可以获得存储器中的空间并同时保持安排中的各个节目的核心安排信息(节目短标题、播放次数和频道)。当然,立即可以认识到的是,根据本发明的技术,存储在EPG存储器中的任何类型的信息都能够得到评价。
在筛选程序被启动之后141,系统首先访问节目的各个安排的播放并给与该播放有关的三个节目变量的每一个分配一个值。该变量名称和它们相应的值被显示在图2的表中。如在该表中所示,较高的值被分配给更可能引起观众兴趣的时段、频道和播放次数。如在图2的表中可见,最佳实施例的EPG允许观众指定喜欢的频道并把这些频道的记录与观众已经购买的收费频道保存在一起。“一般”频道是没有指定购买或喜欢的频道,因而与它们相联系的值较低。图2所示的变量清单只是示例性的,且应该理解的是可以用其他的变量来量化节目信息的当前效用,这种变量的数目只由本发明所应用于的具体的EPG系统的容量来限定。类似地,在最佳实施例中为各个变量范围所选择的具体值也只是示例性的,且通常可根据本地地形或其他参数而改变。

其他变量可以被加到上述公式(1)中,诸如当观众已经设定了一个提醒以观看该节目或已经购买了该具体的节目时等于高值(例如8)且对所有其他节目等于一的“选定节目”变量。在公式(1)中还可  包括一个“范围”变量,它对应于与节目记录相连的数据标签的值并表示了节目的性质的“本地”程度。较高的范围值将被分配给本地倾向较大的数据,反映出观众的很大的兴趣。一旦已经计算出了每一个节目播放的安排记录值,143,系统把一个给定节目的所有安排记录值加在一起,以得到该节目的数据的总值(总节目值)。本发明的该独特的方面使EPG能够把连续范围的效用值分配给节目信息,从而将原来主观的判断(节目的价值是什么?)变成了适合于自动执行的一个客观的判断。或者,系统将得到编程,以采用节目的最高安排记录值作为节目的价值。该实施例在判定观众对具有非常高的单个安排记录值的节目(例如其最新播放将在两个小时后进行的节目)并对具有较低的单个安排记录值但有高的总节目值的节目更为有兴趣的情况下,可能是有用的。
在已经计算了存储在存储器中的每一个节目的总节目值之后,系统就准备好了对存储中的价值最小的长标题和信息记录进行判定。在一个实施例中,价值最小的信息记录和长标题只是那些与具有如上计算出的最低总节目值的节目有关的信息记录和长标题。在此情况下,系统将给相应的长标题和信息记录加上标签,并从存储器144中删除它们。数据的删除将以此方式进行,即从次价值最小的节目开始,直到产生出了足够的自由空间(在程序145中判定,如在发现和删除程序120中那样,并借助预定的存储器利用参数)。或者,系统将得到配置,以给信息记录和长标题数据加上不同的权。在本发明的该实施例中,将根据以下公式为两种数据中的每一种进行计算:

其中记录类型是由系统分配给与该节目有关的数据(信息记录或长标题)的类型的一个唯一的值。数据的删除此时将从最低的记录价值数据开始—不论它是信息记录还是长标题,并继续进行至在存储器中得到了足够的自由空间。在此实施例中公式(1)和公式(2)可被结合成单个的公式,以方便执行。不论采用哪一个实施例,价值最小的数据将被删除,直到在步骤145实现了与预定效用参数的符合。在其中两个节目记录具有相同的值的情况下,系统删除字节数大的记录。
因此,可以看到,本发明使EPG能够以比现有技术的系统更为灵活而有效的方式管理其存储器资源。不需要专门的传输协议。且在不用固定节目数据的二进制值并在此基础上在它得到存储之前对其进行拒绝的情况下,本发明在给定的安排更新中在接收存储节目数据的存储对其进行存储,并允许数据的价值在其存留期间在一个连续的范围中发生改变。观众得到了双重的好处,即在开始时具有所有潜在有价值的节目信息,同时能够在需要存储器空间时实时识别并删除存储在EPG中的价值最小的信息。

Claims (14)

1.一种在电视电子节目指南(EPG)系统中的存储器管理系统,该电视电子节目指南(EPG)系统包含用于接收包括节目名称、计划播放次数和频道的节目安排信息的装置、用于存储节目安排信息的装置、用于执行一个EPG程序的装置和用于在屏幕上显示安排信息的显示装置,该存储器管理系统包括:
用于存储与将要在相应的时段中播放的节目有关的节目安排信息的存储器;和
一种微控制器,被配置用于:
从该存储器中自动删除过时的节目安排信息,以产生出自由空间来存储新的节目安排信息;及
当需要为存储新的节目安排信息,在该存储器中产生出额外的自由空间时,根据未过时节目安排信息对观众的当前使用率值来自动删除该未过时节目安排信息。
2.根据权利要求1的存储器管理系统,进一步包括用于指定该存储器中所需要的自由空间量的装置。
3.根据权利要求2的存储器管理系统,进一步包括用于把该存储器中的实际自由空间与所需要的量相比较的装置。

6.根据权利要求5的存储器管理系统,其中的微控制器还包括用于:
向存储在该存储装置中与节目安排信息对应的各个节目,分配一个使用率值;和
按照与该信息对应的节目的使用率值的递增顺序,删除未过时节目安排信息。
7.根据权利要求6的存储器管理系统,其中的微控制器还包括用于:
为每个节目的每次安排的播放,计算与包含频道、播放次数和过去的小时使用率标准对应的部分使用率值;和
根据每个节目每次安排播放的部分使用率值,计算每一节目的使用率值。
8.一种在电视电子节目指南(PEG)系统中的存储器管理方法,该电视电子节目指南系统包含用于接收包括节目名称、计划播放次数和频道的节目安排信息的装置、用于存储节目安排信息的装置、用于执行一个EPG程序的装置和用于在屏幕上显示安排信息的显示装置,该存储器管理方法包括:
a)存储与将要在相应的时段中播放的节目有关的节目安排信息;
b)从存储装置中自动删除过时的节目安排信息以产生出自由空间来存储新的节目安排信息;
c)当需要为存储新的节目安排信息而在存储装置中产生出额外的自由空间时,根据未过时的节目安排信息的对观众的当前效用值来自动删除节目安排信息。
9.根据权利要求8的存储器管理方法,进一步包括指定存储装置中所需要的自由空间量的步骤。
10.根据权利要求9的存储器管理方法,进一步包括把存储装置中的实际自由空间与所需要的量相比较的步骤。
11.根据权利要求10的存储管理方法,其中删除过时节目安排信息的步骤是当该比较表明存储装置中的实际自由空间小于所需要的量时进行的,并在该比较表明存储装置中的自由空间大于或等于所需要的量时结束。
12.根据权利要求11的存储器管理方法,其中删除过时节目安排信息的步骤是在该比较表明存储装置中的实际自由空间小于所需要的量且在存储装置中没有过时节目安排信息时进行的,并在该比较表明存储装置中的自由空间大于或等于所需要的量时结束。
13.根据权利要求12的存储器管理方法,其中删除未过时节目安排信息的步骤包括:
给在存储装置中为其存储有相应节目安排信息的各个节目分配一个效用值;和
按照与该信息对应的节目的效用值增大的顺序来删除节目安排信息。
14.根据权利要求13的存储器管理方法,其中给节目分配效用值的步骤包括:
为每个节目的每次安排的播放计算对应于包含频道、播放次数和过去的小时的效用标准的部分效用值;及
为每个节目基于那个节目的每次安排的播放的部分效用值来计算效用值。
