技术领域
本发明涉及传真/电子邮件通信系统。此外,特别是本发明提供由任何独立的传真机发送和/或接收电子邮件、Web网页下载和传真件。Web网页是一种超文本标记语言(HTML)出写且存贮于网络服务器的文件。当使用网络浏览器显示时,也可作为部分页面指出现的图像。
背景技术
传真图像通过把具有传真格式的传真信号转换为电子邮件格式(如,RFC-822)移至因特网。一旦转换完成,此电子邮件然后按照“简易邮件传送协议(SMTP)”或相似协议在因特网上转送至预定的目的地。因特网是根据TCP/IP(传输控制协议/网际协议)网络的全球网络。当前有允许用户在因特网上发送传真图像各种用户服务。
按照由eFax,Jfax,CallWave和Telebot等公司提供的一类服务,提供用户一个唯一的电话号。任何传真至此号的文件会转换为电子邮件格式并转送至用户的电子邮件收件箱。此类服务的一个缺点是它要求用户具有一个与电子邮件地址有关的专用电话号。第二个缺点是用户必须把个人传真电话号分发给任何可能要发送传真给用户的人员。最后,因为购置和运作这么放多个别的专用电话号的费用是昂贵的,所以,从服务提供者的角度看,此类服务的操作费很大。
UUNET公司提供另一类服务,要求用户在用户传真机和服务网络之间添设附加硬件。此类服务目的是为大容量用户减少长途传真费用。UUNET系统把传真转换为等同的电子邮件,并将此邮件经路由选择在UUNET网络上邮寄至最近的UUFAX服务器。UUFAX服务器把此邮件转回至传真形式,并用本地呼叫把传真送至目的传真机。此类服务的缺点是它们费时间,还要添设附加的前端硬件和接收此服务的开支。
发明内容
一般说来,本发明包含一种传真/电子邮件通信系统和方法,由此,用户能由任何独立的传真机通过集中Web服务器或连接至因特网的客户机发送电子邮件,也能发送传真至任何独立的传真机。
根据本发明的一个方面,提供一种由传真机传送电子邮件的系统。本系统示范实施例由下列组成:传真服务器,配置为接收来自始发场所的传真图像格式的传真,此传真包括电子邮件地址;与传真服务器通信中的字符识别器,配置为取出电子邮件地址;第1格式转换器,配置为接收传真并把传真转换为电子邮件格式的电子邮件;电子邮件服务器,配置为接收电子邮件并取出电子邮件地址且传送此电子邮件至由此电子邮件地址识别的最终场所;广告服务器,配置为生成在确认页上插入广告的确认页。
按照本发明的第2方面,提供一种由传真传送电子邮件的方法。本方法示范实施例包括下列步骤:接收来自始发场所的传真图像格式的传真,此传真包括电子邮件地址;从传真中取出电子邮件地址;把传真图像格式转换为具有电子邮件格式的电子邮件;生成带有广告在其中的确认页。
按照本发明的第3方面,提供一种在传真与电子邮件之间通信系统。此系统示范实施例包含:网络操作中心;与网络操作中心通信中的多个地理上分布的显现点,每个显现点具有传真服务器,配置为接收来自始发场所的传真图像格式的传真,此传真包括电子邮件地址;与传真服务器通信中的字符识别器,配置为取出电子邮件地址;第1格式转换器,配置为接收传真和把传真转换为电子邮件格式的电子邮件;电子邮件服务器,配置为接收电子邮件并取出电子邮件地址且把此电子邮件传送至由电子邮件地址识别的最终场所;广告服务器,配置为生成在确认页上插入广告的确认页。

按照本发明的第5方面,提供一种由电子邮件传送传真的方法。本方法示范实施例包括下列步骤:登录于网络操作中心的Web服务器;构成具有传真号在内的电子邮件;获取传真号;把电子邮件转换为传真,生成回送传真页;在回送传真页中插入广告;把传真和回送传真页发送至由传真号识别的目的地。

具体实施方式
图1是按照本发明示范实施例的传真/电子邮件通信系统5的高层方框图。系统5由有选择地耦合至普通的电话系统(POTS)和因特网的网络操作中心8(NOC),和通过POTS和因特网有选择地耦合至NOC8的多个存在点(POPs)等组成。这儿所指的“因特网”是指基于TCP/IP协议的网络的全球网络和其中所有的入网手段(如,具有电子邮件系统和耦合至因特网的局域网)。TCP/IP是“传输控制协议/网际协议”,是一种控制因特网上所有计算机之间通信的语言。
以下将详述,系统5的各种功能中,包含允许用户由任何独立的传真机2发送电子邮件和接收来自传真或电子邮件发送方的传真,不需要给传真或电子邮件发送方分发一个唯一的预先规定的传真号。这儿必须强调,传真机2,如图1所示,仅是一个工作例子,换句话说,在本发明上下文中使用的传真机也可由遵从任何传真协议的通信装置所组成。同样,图1中计算机工作站4也是一个工作例子。换句话说,任何能发送电子邮件的装置也可加以使用,来替代计算机工作站4。
POP 10分布地地理区域较广,如美国或全世界。POP10示范实施例示于图2。POP10由1个或更多调制解调器组20、1个或更多传真服务器22、广告和统计服务器24(ad/stat)、以太网交换机30;IP路由器32和T-1通道服务单元34(CSU)等组成。必须强调,图2的POP10只是个例子。例如,其他配置也在本发明的精神和范围内,其中包括但不限于使用较高容量因特网接入线路(如,T-3)、多重交换机电子邮件服务器设备等等。图1和图2将在下面描述的上下文中进一步加以详细说明。
参照图3A,按照本发明示范实施例示出用户如何由传真服务器22取得“地址页”。在步骤40,用户由传真机或电话拨打一个专门免费回传号(如,1-800)。根据用户的地理场所,此回传号由电话网络通过POTS,选择传至POP10。如图2所示,POP10的传真调制解调器库20在由24路由话群组成的B-1线上接收传真。然后,在步骤42上,PO10发送空白电子邮件“地址页”返回到用户,并带有如何从用户传真机发送电子邮件的进一步指示。
电子邮件地址看上去象正常的传真封面页,但它含有若干行空白字符框和用户能使用的当地电话号,使用户能不花费用发传真。本地电话号是通过自动号码识别由表驱动翻译处理而生成的,可以从拨出号1-800检测该识别。在另一实施例中,使用单一的免费号,就可接通系统5的各个POP10。电子邮件地址页示范实施例示于图4。在一个示范实施例中,字符框61在各个字符框61边缘上有“位置标记”63。位置标记63的作用在于迫使用户把字符写入字符框61但离开字符框边缘,因为在往后过程中,当进行字符识别时,字符可更精确地得到识别。
现参照图3B,按照本发明示范实施例,示出为了由传真机5发送电子邮件,用户如何与本发明的系统5产生交互作用。在步骤44上,用户以正常手写体填充字母框,并附有想发送的最终电子邮件地址,如“john doe@generic.com”。另一种方法是电子邮件地址以机器可读的格式打印。在另一示范实施例中,电子邮件地址页包括“高级特征页”,它可下载至用户传真,使用户可建立组分布表。
在步骤46上,用户发送传真至所选择的POP10的本地号,由传真服务器22上的传真调制解调器组20接收。传真调制解调器组20包括输入的传真假脱机程序60,此程序把传真转换至图像文件格式,如,标准G3TIFF格式,然后,把图像传真暂时贮存在光盘驱动器上的假脱机程序区(图中未示出)。此图像电子邮件地址页然后传送至POP10的传真服务器22中的1个,作进一步处理。
除了传真假脱机程序60之外,如图5所示,每个传真服务器22的软件结构70由前页(即地址页)字符识别模块62传真至电子邮件网关64、电子邮件至传真网关66和外发传真假脱机程序68等组成。
在步骤48上,前面字符识别模块62工作,从图像电子邮件地址页中取出图像电子邮件地址。最好是前页字符识别模块62通过光学字符识别(OCR)来完成此工作。
在步骤50上,对传真的电子图像由传真至电子邮件网关64进行封装,并进行格式化,成为遵照MIME的电子邮件信息“MIME”代表“多媒体因特网函件扩展”,并指电子邮件信息必须如何格式化,才能在不同的电子邮件系统之间进行交换的正式因特网标准。然后,传真的电子图像作为电子邮件的附件传送至电子邮件服务器26。
在由电子邮件服务器26接收传真图像时,电子邮件服务器26把电子邮件发送状态传送至广告和统计服务器(ad/stat)24。如图5所示,ad/stat服务器24的软件结构71由确认和指令页编制器72、题目页编制器74和PostScript页面描述语言核心程序76等组成。确认和指令页编制器72从电子邮件服务器26接收电子邮件投送状态,然后以PostScript页面描述语言格式生成投送或无投送通知和用户指令页。
在步骤52上,确认和指令页编制器72生成确认和指令页后,在步骤54上,从ad/stat服务器24中检索广告并把广告编入于确认和指令页。此外,在步骤56,确认和指令页编制器72从ad/stat服务器24中检索例如在标题格式编入电子邮件的广告。最好是把编入于确认和指令页的广告专门针对用户的理理场所。系统5从用户传真号前辍和区域代码中决定用户地理场所,然后根据用户邻域的人口统计特性(如平均收入等级)为广告定目标。在另一实施例中,电子邮件地址确认页包括电子商务方面,其中在确认和指令页上给用户“检查框”,用户检查此检查框,可指出进一步关注某一广告报价。确认和指令页示范实施例示于图6。
另一示范实施例中,在过程开始时就提供用户一个收费号(如,1-900),即代替图3A的步骤10,供用户在上述免费广告补贴服务或确认和指令页上不插入广告的每次使用收费服务之间进行任选。
在编制确认和指令页后,由PostScript页面描述语言核心程序76把它光栅化,成为传真编码的位图图像,然后发送至传真服务器22,在那儿,外发传真假脱机程序68工作,把此光栅化的确认和指令页存贮在当地光盘驱动器中,供往后提交。因为位图图像描绘过程要大量计算,为了在一些传真服务器22之间分配光栅化处理,用户可使用均分负载软件,这作为另一个示范实施例。
在步骤58上,电子邮件(带有广告)在因特网上发送至使用SMTP协议的接收方,作为标准格式中的一个附件如,GIF文件在大多数平台上都可观察到的。
最后,在步骤59上,确认和指令页在POTS上发送至用户,此编入广告的确认和指令页在上面已解释过。
在这点上,必须强调,示出的图5的软件结构的软件模块分布于多个服务器,但本行业技术人员应该理解,所有软件模块可常驻在单个服务器上,或在与图5示范实施例不同的服务器上。
在另一示范实施例中,用户能与本发明系统产生交换互作用,由一独立的传真机发送传真至任何其他独立的传真机。为此,用户取得“传真号页”,与上述步骤40和42中取得电子邮件地址页相似。然后,用户以手写格式或打印的机器可读格式输入预定的传真接收方的传真号,再发出此传真至所选择的POP10的本地号(或另一种方法,输入每次使用付费的服务费号)。在由选择的POP10接收传真时,取出传真号,由传真至电子邮件网关64把传真的电子图像格式化,成为遵照MIME的电子邮件信息,与上述步骤48和50相似。其次,电子邮件服务器26发送MIME图像至常驻于另一个POP10的电子邮件至传真的网关66,网关66把MIME图像转换为文本式(如,PostScript页面描述语言)文件。然后,PostScript页面描述语言核心程序96工作,把文本式文件光栅化,成为传真编码位图图像。最后,外发传真假脱机程序68接收传真编码位图图像,并发送它至预定的传真接收方。
在本发明又一示范实施例中,Web页可通过传真下载。在此示范实施例中,提供用户如上所述的“地址页”。此地址页提供一些字母框,用于输入所需的Web地址(如,此地址能以一般手写格式或打印的机器可读格式来输入)和某种指示器,用户用它从用户要下载的Web地址中请求页数。有关地址页的一类指示器,如可以是位于地址页上预定位置上的一连串磁泡。
参照图7中,按照本发明示范实施例示出网络操作中心(NOC)8。NOC8作用如系统司令部,其配置为与所有POP10通信,如图1所说明。NOC8包含因特网接入路由器和通过如T1通道服务单元84(CSU)耦合于因特网和以太网交换机86之间的防火墙构件(IP路由器)82,数据速率为100Mbps;耦合于IP路由器82的Web服务器88;通过例B-1线耦合于电话网络的专用小交换机(PBX)90;耦合于PBX90的交互作用式语音应答单元(IVR)92和耦合于IVR单元92和以太网交换机86之间的计算机-电话综合服务器(CTI)等组成。耦合于以太网交换机86还有NOC统计服务器96、NOC广告统计服务器98、NOC工作站100和管理/开发工作站102等。
NOC广告统计服务器98贮存给广告商利用的有关广告商的广告设计,如广告发送次数、来自广告收看者的积极响应次数等等。
NOC管理/开发工作站的作用是对登录于Web服务器的用户起到求助台作用,并允许系统提供者进行开发,如提高由Web服务器88所提供的Web网站功能性。
IVR单元92允许用户利用用于上述的传真至电子邮件过程开始时使用的同样的1-800免费接入号,通过PBX90拨号进入NOC。IVR92提供用户话音提示,用户使用电话键盘对提示作出应答。此提示涉及使用指令,或允许用户从因特网下载信息,如,股票行情、天气预报、旅游信息等等。
在本发明另一示范实施例中,用户可从例如计算机工作站4登录至Web服务器88(见图1),然后,由电子邮件发送传真至任何独立的传真机。完成该示范实施例的过程示于图8A。
在步骤110上,用户登录于Web服务器88后(见图7),用户把电子邮件发送至Web服务器88。然后,在步骤112上,Web服务器获取并存贮想发送传真的用户的电子邮件地址和传真号,此信息在因特网上经过中继至电子邮件服务器26,最好是与传真号有关的最近的POP10的电子邮件服务器26。如图5所示,每个电子邮件服务器26包含接收来自NOC8的电子邮件的电子邮件传送代理39。电子邮件至传真的网关66工作,把电子邮件信息转换为PostScript页面描述语言文本。
在步骤114上,标题页编制器74生成回送传真页,在步骤116上,由ad/stat服务器24检索广告,并在回送传真页上编入广告。最好使广告专门针对传真接收方场所。系统5通过把存贮在ad/stat服务器24的地区代码号和前辍号与接收方传真号前辍和地区代码进行比较,决定此场所。一旦邻域被识别,就根据接收方邻域的人口统计数据特性(如平均收入等)为广告作定目标。另一示范实施例中,回送传真页包括电子商务方面,其中在回送传真页上给传真接收方提供“检查框”,接收方可检查此检查框,指出进一步关注的某一广告的报价。
编制回送传真页后,此页和经转换的传真图像由PostScript页面描述语言核心程序76加以光栅化,成为传真编码位图图像,然后发送至POP10的传真调制解调器组20,其中外发传真假脱机程序68工作,把光栅化传真和回送传真页存贮在本地光盘驱动器中,作往后发送。
在步骤118上,传真和返回送传真页在POTS上发送至传真接收方。
参照图8B,在步骤120上,在接收传真和回送传真页时,传真接收方使用回送传真页应答传真,并在步骤122上发送应答传真。
在步骤124上,ad/stat服务器24的标题编制器74工作,生成编入第2广告的确认页,然后在步骤126上,送回至回送传真页用户。步骤124和126基本上按照步骤54和59,如参照图3B的传真至电子邮件过程所述。
本发明系统和方法的广告补贴方面也允许用户由任何独立的传真机免费发送传真至任何另外的独立的传真机,因此可避免支付专门为长途传真传输而付出的长途电话费用。为了达到此目的,用户可简单地拨打免费长途接入号(1-800),如上所述,以便取得POP10的本地号。然后本地的POP10把地址页回传至用户。然后进行步骤44和48,如图3B所示,接下来是步骤110至118,如以前图8A所述。上述过程中唯一差别是在地址页上提供传真地址的字母框和提供取出传真地址的OCR性能。
在本发明另一示范实施例中,NOC8包括本地数据库(图7中未示出),它配置为存贮用户常用的电子邮件地址薄。用户可登录Web服务器88,使用各个电子邮件地址上载地址薄和关联的别或或真名(如“John Doe”所用地址是john doe@geheric.com)。这样做,用户通过用期望接收方的别名或真名填地址页字母框,就可方便地由任何独立的传真机发送电子邮件(如以前图3B所述)。
最后,在本发明另一示范实施例中,提供广告商“动态印刷广告”服务,由此,广告商可登录NOC8的Web服务器88,开帐户,建立广告,并根据特定人口统计信息按需要订制广告。
归纳起来,本发明方法和装置允许用户由任何独立的传真机发送电子邮件;接收来自另一方的传真,不需要用户事先得到并分发事先规定的唯一传真号;通过登录于由集中式操作中心提供的Web服务器,由电子邮件发送传真。
虽然本发明已按照最佳方法和结构来加以描述,但对于本行业技术人员来说,这点很明显,按照本发明,对已揭示的示范实施例还可作出许多改进和变动。因而,这些改进和变动要当作在附录的权利要求书所规定的本发明的精神和范围之内。

Claims (38)

1.一种把电子邮件从遵照传真协议的通信装置传送至电子邮件目的地的系统,包括:
传真服务器,配置为从与用户相关联的遵照传真协议的通信装置接收传真图像格式的传真,此传真包括对应于所述电子邮件目的地的电子邮件地址;
与所述传真服务器通信的字符识别器,所述字符识别器被配置为从所述传真中取出所述电子邮件地址;
第一格式转换器,配置为接收所述传真并把此传真图像格式转换为适合于在电子邮件系统上传送的电子邮件格式;
服务器,配置为确定广告;以及
电子邮件服务器,配置为形成包括附件并结合电子邮件消息部分内的广告的电子邮件,所述电子邮件消息部分被定址到从所述传真取出的电子邮件地址,所述电子邮件服务器并被配置成将所述电子邮件传送至所述电子邮件目的地以及向所述服务器提供所述电子邮件的传送状态;以及
其中所述服务器被配置成向所述用户提供所述传送状态。
2.如权利要求1所述的系统,其特征在于,遵照传真协议的通信装置包括传真机。
3.如权利要求2所述的系统,其特征在于,传真机配置为接收传真硬拷贝,此硬拷贝具有包括在封面页上位于事先决定地方的电子邮件地址的封面页。
4.如权利要求1所述的系统,其特征在于进一步包括与电子邮件服务器通信中的广告服务器,配置为从电子邮件服务器接收投送状态。
5.如权利要求4所述的系统,其特征在于,广告服务器包括配置为生成具有传真图像格式的确认页的确认页编制器。
6.如权利要求5所述的系统,其特征在于,确认页编制器配置为接收投送状态并生成投送和无投送通知。
7.如权利要求6所述的系统,其特征在于,传真服务器配置为接收传真格式的投送和无投送通知,以便传输至遵照传真协议的通信装置。
8.如权利要求5所述的系统,其特征在于,确认页编制器进一步配置为检索来自广告服务器的广告并把广告编入于确认页中。
9.如权利要求8所述的系统,其特征在于,传真服务器是配置为接收传真格式的确认页,以便传输至遵照传真协议的通信装置。
10.如权利要求1所述的系统,其特征在于,字符识别器通过光学字符识别取出电子邮件地址。
11.如权利要求1所述的系统,其特征在于,电子邮件地址是手写的。
12.如权利要求1所述的系统,其特征在于,电子邮件地址是以机器可读的格式打印的。
13.如权利要求1所述的系统,其特征在于,广告服务器进一步配置为存贮广告统计。
14.一种把电子邮件从遵照传真协议的通信装置经由存在点POP传送至电子邮件目的地的通信方法,其特征在于,包括以下步骤:
从遵照传真协议的通信装置接收传真图像格式的传真,所述传真包括相当于电子邮件目的地的电子邮件地址;
从该传真中取出电子邮件地址;
把传真图像格式转换为适合于在电子邮件系统上传送至电子邮件目的地的电子邮件格式;
生成传真图像格式的确认页,发送该确认页至遵照传真协议的通信装置。
15.如权利要求14所述的方法,其特征在于,遵照传真协议的通信装置包括传真机。
16.如权利要求14所述的方法,其特征在于,所述传真包括具有电子邮件地址的封面页,所述电子邮件地定位在所述封面页的预定位置。
17.如权利要求14所述的方法,还包括在所述接收步骤之前,将空白电子邮件“地址页”发送给所述遵照传真协议的通信装置的步骤。
18.如权利要求17所述的方法,其特征在于,电子邮件地址被填充到所述空白电子邮件“地址页”并在所述传真图像格式的传真中经由所述遵照传真协议的通信装置被发送到所述存在点。
19.如权利要求14所述的方法,其特征在于,取出步骤是由光学字符识别来进行的。
20.如权利要求14所述的方法,其特征在于,电子邮件地址是手写的。
21.如权利要求14所述的方法,其特征在于,电子邮件地址是以机器可读的格式打印的。
22.如权利要求14所述的方法,其特征在于,进一步包括把广告编入于确认页的步骤。
23.如权利要求21所述的方法,其特征在于,进一步包括把确认页发送至遵照传真协议的通信装置。
24.一种把电子邮件从遵照传真协议的通信装置传送至电子邮件目的地的系统,其特征在于,它包括:
网络操作中心;
多个地理上分布的显现点,这些显现点具有:
传真服务器,配置为从与用户相关联的遵照传真协议的通信装置接收传真图像格式的传真,此传真包括对应于所述电子邮件目的地的电子邮件地址;
与所述传真服务器通信的字符识别器,所述字符识别器被配置为从所述传真中取出所述电子邮件地址;
第一格式转换器,配置为接收传真并且把传真转换为具有适于在电子邮件系统上传送的格式的电子邮件;
电子邮件服务器,配置为形成包括附件并结合电子邮件消息部分内的广告的电子邮件,所述电子邮件消息部分被定址到从所述传真取出的电子邮件地址,所述电子邮件服务器并被配置成将所述电子邮件传送至所述电子邮件目的地以及向所述服务器提供所述电子邮件的传送状态;以及
其中所述服务器被配置成向所述用户提供所述传送状态。
25.如权利要求24所述的系统,其特征在于,遵照传真协议的通信装置包括传真机。
26.如权利要求24所述的系统,其特征在于,遵照传真协议的通信装置配置为接收传真的硬拷贝,此硬拷贝具有包括位于封面页上事先规定地方上的电子邮件地址的封面页。
27.如权利要求26所述的系统,其特征在于,封面页由网络操作中心通过免费电话号来提供。
28.如权利要求24所述的系统,其特征在于,每个显现点包括与有关电子邮件服务器通信的广告服务器,配置为从电子邮件服务器接收投送状态。
29.如权利要求28所述的系统,其特征在于,广告服务器包括配置为生成确认页的确认页编制器。
30.如权利要求29所述的系统,其特征在于,确认页编制器配置为接收投送状态并生成投送和无投送通知。
31.如权利要求30所述的系统,其特征在于,传真服务器配置为接收传真格式的投送和无投送通知,以便传输至遵照传真协议的通信装置。
32.如权利要求29所述的系统,其特征在于,确认页编制器进一步配置为从广告服务器中检索广告并把广告编入于确认页上。
33.如权利要求32所述的系统,其特征在于,传真服务器配置为接收传真格式的确认页,以便传输至遵照传真协议的通信装置。
34.如权利要求24所述的系统,其特征在于,字符识别器通过光学字符识别取出电子邮件地址。
35.如权利要求24所述的系统,其特征在于,电子邮件地址是手写的。
36.如权利要求24所述的系统,其特征在于,电子邮件地址是以机器可读的格式打印的。
37.如权利要求24所述的系统,其特征在于,网络操作中心进一步包括:
在与显现点的广告服务器通信中的广告和统计服务器,它可为贮存广告和广告统计工作。
38.如权利要求37所述的系统,其特征在于,网络操作中心进一步包括话音交互作用式装置,用于使用话音输入,与广告和统计服务器进行通信。
