详细描述
概览
本发明描述了为数字作品作注解以及呈现数字作品的注解。特别地，在某些实现中，可以在电子书阅读器设备或其它适合的显示设备上创建和/或呈现注解。能在电子书阅读器或其它显示设备的给定显示器上显示的内容量可受各种显示条件的影响，例如屏幕大小、字体类型或大小、屏幕分辨率、页边距、行距等。该问题的出现是由于显示在显示设备上的虚拟帧或“页”不是永久固定的，并且其可以基于显示条件的改变来重新定义或重新编页。因此，在一个显示设备上阅读数字作品的用户有意义地将页面引用传达给在另一显示设备上的同一数字作品的读者可能是困难或不可能的，因为上述显示条件中的一个或多个可能是不同的。结果，基于对数字作品的“页”引用的数字作品的注解可能无法准确传达该注解所应用到的数字作品的那部分。此外，如果显示条件不同于撰写注解时的条件，则该注解可能不会在预期位置显示。

示例性计算环境

图5示出补救与显示条件的变化相关的上述问题的示例性不变位置参考方案。如图5所示，电子书Romeo and Juliet同样被具有不同显示条件的两个显示设备400和402显示。然而，在该情况下，显示设备不是显示可随显示条件的改变而变化的虚拟页码，而是显示对应于所显示内容502的至少一部分(为了清楚，在一个文本框中示出)的不变位置参考标识符500。不变位置参考标识符500是对应于电子书中的内容502的特定位置或片段的唯一标识符，其不受屏幕大小、字体类型或大小、分辨率或其它显示条件的改变所影响。因此，不变位置参考标识符500提供了对已分配文本502的参考，而不考虑显示设备的显示条件。这允许用户容易地将特定电子书内容的位置传达给在其它显示设备上和/或在不同显示条件下阅读同一电子书的其他用户。另外，该不变位置参考方案可以应用到注解来标识该注解所应用到的文本的特定位置或章节。
不变位置参考标识符可以作为数字作品本身的任何划分标记(如页码、章编号、书籍编号、章节编号等)以及任何虚拟(可变)页编号的补充来提供，或者代替此类划分标记和/或虚拟页编号来提供。通常，不变位置参考标识符与数字作品分开，以便数字作品不被位置参考标识符所改变，但未必是这样。不变位置参考标识符提供了一种用户能够确定数字作品中内容的位置并能够确定该内容相对于数字作品的开头与结尾大概位于何处的可靠手段。不变位置参考标识符还可以用作标识注解的源、引文、或来自某电子书的节选、或当一电子书参考来自另一电子书的段落时(例如，参见莎士比亚，“Romeo and Juliet”，位置201)的手段。
在数字作品内容中或与其相关联地提供不变位置参考标识符存在多种方法。另外，划分数字作品并向其分配不变位置参考标识符存在多种方法。例如，可以将每个不变位置参考标识符分配单独的字符或词、词组、句子、段落、预定大小的文本带、数据单元或数字作品的某种其它划分。划分数字作品，产生、分配和/或存储不变位置参考标识符的附加细节在2006年12月29日提交的题为“Invariant Reference in Digital Works(数字作品中的不变参考)”的美国临时申请第60/882,870号中描述，其通过引用结合于此。
示例性注解方法
图6是用于接收和提供数字作品的注解的一种示例性方法600的流程图。方法600可以但不是必须使用图1、2和3中示出的服务器系统102和/或客户端系统104、106、130和132中的一个或多个来实现。在该特定实现中，方法600在可任选框602处开始，在这里从源获取数字作品，源包括但不限于出版商、作家或作品的其他创作人。在框604处，以其可被他人访问的方式来提供数字作品。如之前记述的，服务器系统102可以包括数字作品数据库124，其具有包含例如书籍、照片、手册、音乐、电影等所有形式的数字内容的媒体文件。数字作品数据库124中的数字作品的目录可由服务器系统102的数据库管理器220提供给客户端系统104、106、130和132。客户端系统104、106、130和132可以请求、显示、回放或者以其它方式消费包含数字作品的文件。将数字作品传送给客户端系统104、106、130和132可通过各种方式来实现，包括但不限于，下载数字文件、将数字文件从服务器系统102流传输、或者在计算机可访问的源处提供对数字作品的访问(例如，通过提供到数字作品的URL)。另外地或另选地，如以上讨论的，数字作品、注解和/或认证证书可以在对等基础上从一个客户端系统直接传送到另一个客户端系统，如图1中客户端系统106和132之间的箭头所示。
2003年9月23日提交的美国专利申请第10/669,088号(本发明的受让人共同拥有并通过引用结合于此)公开了可以结合这里描述的实现使用的其它示例性系统。这些系统可包括包含处于多种表现形式的数字作品的一个或多个数据库。数字作品的一种表现形式可包括内容的页的图像，而数字作品的另一种表现形式可包括内容的文本可搜索形式。页图像中的内容与内容的文本可搜索形式相关联。页图像可存储在页图像数据库中，而可搜索文本可存储在文本可搜索数据库中。内容的页的图像可使用本领域已知的方法来获得，例如扫描印刷页、将电子文本转换成文档图像、从存储器检索页图像、从他人接收页图像等。
对于内容的页的每一图像，可以对页图像执行识别例程，例如光学字符识别(OCR)，以标识该页上的每个词的文本、位置和大小并提供该页的文本可搜索表现形式。在该上下文中，“词”可涵盖一个或多个字符、数字或符号的任意组合。另外，词可以是独立的或与例如图片或图形等非文本对象相关联。OCR例程在电子文档处理领域里是公知的，因而不需要在此进一步讨论。对页图像上的文本进行处理而获取的所得文本、位置和大小信息可存储在文本可搜索数据库中。
文本可搜索数据库可按需要来组织，这可以包括使用为进行全文搜索而优化的数据结构。在一个合适的实现中，文本可搜索数据库中的每一个词具有与其关联的数字作品的内容标识编号(如SKU编号)以及对应于该数字作品和页图像数据库中该特定词被找到的图像的页码。此外，文本可搜索数据库通常包括标识在每一相应页图像上找到的文本(可能还标识与该文本相关联的非文本对象)的位置和大小的信息。在一个实现中，位置和大小信息被记录为“四元组(quad)”，它包括表示当文本出现在特定页图像上时该文本的X和Y位置以及宽度和高度的四个数字。所有这些信息可以编码在文本可搜索数据库中以减少所需的存储空间。
下面将要详细描述的，在某些实现中，可以接收关于数字作品的特定内容的注解。如以上讨论的文本可搜索数据库可被用来使注解的作者(或其他人、实体或设备)能够指示数字作品中的特定内容并将注解与该特定内容相关联。如记述的，文本可搜索数据库可被构造成包括有助于标识页图像数据库中对应于该特定内容的图像的信息。因此，当注解的作者通过在文本可搜索数据库中选择文本来指示数字作品中的特定内容时，所选择文本不仅标识该作者正在作注解的特定内容，而且标识页图像数据库中表示该特定内容的相对应的页图像。在这一点上，如以上讨论的词的位置和大小信息可能是有用的，因为它将文本可搜索数据库中的文本与在相对应的页图像中表示该文本的位置相关联。
例如，假设作者136(图1)想要提交对数字作品的评论，提供更新或补充资料，或者以其它方式为数字作品作注解，则作者136将注解输入到客户端系统132中。取决于客户端系统132所提供的软件和硬件，作者136可以用各种各样的格式将注解输入到客户端系统132中。例如，在一种格式中，作者136可以操作键盘来将文本注解输入到客户端系统132中。在另一种格式中，作者136可以输入图像注解，如手写笔记或绘图。图像注解可以出现在关于被作注解的数字作品的上下文中，例如，在数字作品的显示中的特定内容的页边、与其相邻、或重叠在它的上方或靠近。在客户端系统132包括易于接受手写输入的敏感屏幕的情况下，手写注解可能尤其适合。在又一种格式中，作者136可以通过提供包含与数字作品有关的图像的图像文件来为该数字作品作注解。当服务器系统102从诸如作者136等作者接收到数字作品的注解时，该作者可以指示该注解所属的数字作品中的一个或多个特定位置或内容(例如，使用来自页图像数据库的页、不变位置参考标识符、或这二者)。在某些实现中，在允许作者136向服务器系统102提交注解之前，可要求该作者登录或者以其它方式提交标识。
如在图6中的框606处所示，服务器系统102可以从作者接收数字作品的注解。在作者136正在向客户端系统132提供注解的情况下，客户端系统132通过网络108将注解传递给服务器系统102。服务器系统102接收到的注解可以与数字作品相关联地存储在注解数据库126中，如在框608处所示。与数字作品相关联地存储注解可通过任何合适的方式来实现，包括简单地将注解与该注解所属的数字作品的指示，且适当时与该注解所属的作品中的特定内容的指示一起存储在注解数据库126中。通常，服务器系统102的操作者之前已经与作者关于该作者对提交到服务器系统102的注解可能要求的任何版权或其它所有权利益达成协议。
本发明的实现具有广泛的适用性，下面的示例仅仅是其中的一小部分。下面的示例给出了为理解本发明的几个优点而选择的上下文。例如，注解可以是数字作品的评论，或者作为替换，可以是概要。注解可以是关于数字作品所呈现的相同主题的独立文章。注解可以是用户所提供的词、图表、公式、文件、图像、增强等。例如，用户可能希望通过提供旅游书籍中描述的地点的最新近图像来为该旅游书籍作注解。对于诸如音乐文件等音频数字作品，作者可以利用评论歌曲的附加内容、提供歌手或录制过程的背景信息、可选的歌词、关于作曲的技术信息、相关音乐创作等来为音乐文件作注解。在数字作品是烹饪书籍的情况下，例如，作者可以提交增强食谱的替换食材、制作味道更加浓厚的菜的食材、被认为是脂肪或碳水化合物更低的食材替代物等。在另一情况下，作为作者的学生或老师可以提供学校课本的标记。从以上所述可以理解，实际上对可被添加到数字作品的注解的类型、形式和内容没有限制。作为说明，注解还可以是到服务器系统或客户端系统可用的另一页面、文件或文档的链接或地址的形式。
服务器系统102可以向从服务器系统102获取数字作品的用户(例如图1中示出的用户120)通知该数字作品的注解是可用的。需要时，服务器系统102可以向用户120呈现注解的一个或多个概要或者注解的一部分以供预览。
如在图6的框610处所示，服务器系统102可以接收用户对数字作品注解的请求。该请求通常标识数字作品，可能还标识所需的特定注解。取决于实现，数字作品注解的分发可被限制到具有恰当的授权凭证的用户，当授权凭证呈现给服务器系统102并且被确认时，使用户能够接收所请求的注解。关于授权凭证的附加讨论将在下面提供。如在判定框612处所示，方法600确定用户是否已经呈现授权凭证。如果否，则方法600在框614处通过拒绝用户访问所请求的注解而终止。如果授权凭证已被呈现，则方法600在判定框616处确定该授权凭证是否有效。如果授权凭证无效，则方法600在框614处通过拒绝用户访问该注解而终止。否则，在框618处向用户提供数字作品的注解。将注解传递给用户可以通过下载该注解、从服务器系统102流传输该注解、将该注解从一个客户端系统传送到另一个客户端系统(对等)、或者在网络源处提供对注解的访问(例如，通过提供到注解的URL)来实现，并可能连同该注解所属的数字作品的部分或全部一起以及与其显式地相关联递来传递。
用户呈现的授权凭证可采用适于在服务器系统102中处理的任何形式。例如，授权凭证可以是包含服务器系统102中识别的符号或字母数字代码的令牌。用户可通过各种方式获得用于访问注解的授权凭证。例如，购买数字作品的用户可以自动接收到免费接收该数字作品的现有和/或未来注解的授权凭证。另选地，作者可以向服务器系统102提供某种形式的报酬，例如金钱支付或价值的其它项目或表现形式。用户还可以接收授权凭证来作为因执行服务器系统102指定的动作的激励。例如，用户可以因电子地预览数字作品或者购买一个或多个相关数字作品或注解而接收授权凭证。用户还可以因执行例如填写调查、参与游戏、或者提供对数字作品的注解等动作而接收授权凭证。在某些情况下，可以通过当用户请求访问注解时简单地给予用户授权凭证的方式来提供对该注解的免费访问。
服务器系统102被配置成从请求注解的用户接收授权凭证并确定该凭证是否有效，从而使用户能够访问该注解。可以用任何合适的方式来确定用户的授权凭证有效，包括将用户提交的凭证与已被授权并分发给用户的已知凭证的列表相比较。在凭证是旨在用于单次使用的情况下，对凭证的使用可以导致该凭证从本例的列表中移除。授权凭证的确认可以单独传递给用户或简单地跟随到用户的所请求注解的传递。
在其它实现中，可生成并分发用于与特定注解或注解组一起使用的授权凭证，并且如此其只可被用于授权对该特定注解或注解组的访问。此外，取决于授权凭证的格式，授权凭证可自行标识其所属的注解。在该情况下(其中授权凭证标识注解)，本发明的各实现可被配置成接收该授权凭证并自动认为其是对该注解的请求。因而用户可以在单个步骤中请求注解并呈现授权凭证。
授权凭证可被有利地用于建立向他人分发注解的市场。例如，当用户打算对注解提交金钱报酬时，可以向该用户给予对一数字作品的注解的价目表。然后用户可以选择其想要接收哪些注解并为其付款。在其它实现中，可以使用订阅模型，其中用户支付月/年费从而能够访问可用注解的某些组或全部。在线市场138(图1)可以使用市场上可获得的支付处理系统来从用户接收对注解的支付。
图7是示出为数字作品作注解的另一示例性方法700的流程图。方法700被描述为使用例如图3中所示的电子书阅读器设备300来实现。然而，应理解，方法700可使用诸如PC、PDA等其它任何合适的客户端设备来实现。在该实现中，方法700同样在可任选框702处开始，在这里从诸如出版商、作家或作品的其它创作人等源处获取数字作品，并且可将其存储在电子书阅读器设备300的系统存储314中。在框704处，获取数字作品的不变位置参考标识符。不变位置参考标识符可存储在与数字作品分开的索引文件中、嵌入在数字作品的数据文件中、或者以其它方式与数字作品相关联。尽管获取数字作品702以及获取不变位置参考标识符704由两个分开的框示出，但在某些实现中，不变位置参考标识符可以与数字作品本身一起获取。
在框706处，在电子书阅读器设备300处接收数字作品的注解。注解可通过各种方是来接收，包括例如，由用户/作者通过电子书阅读器设备300的用户界面输入，被下载或者以其它方式随该注解所对应的数字作品一起被获取，和/或从另一对等客户端系统直接接收。从用户/作者输入接收到的注解可使用键盘304、一个或多个用户输入310(如通过加亮文本等)来输入，和/或在屏幕306、308之一或全部是触敏的情况下使用指示笔或其它定点设备来输入。
在框708处确定注解是否专属于数字作品的某个部分或数字作品中的某个位置。如果注解不是专属于数字作品的某个部分，则该方法前进至框712。然而如果注解是专属于数字作品的某个部分(如数字作品的一段)，则在框710处，可以将对应于数字作品的该特定部分一个或多个不变位置参考标识符附加到该注解。通过这种方法，注解可在不同显示设备上一致地与数字作品的同一内容相关联，而不考虑显示特性。一旦附加了不变位置参考标识符，则该方法前进至框712。
在框712处，存储注解。注解可以本地地存储在电子书阅读器设备300的系统存储314中和/或远程地存储在诸如注解数据库126等远程数据存储中。在某些情况下，注解可被存储在电子书阅读器设备的本地存储器中，并接着被传送到远程数据存储。注解可被存储在与数字作品分开的注解文件中，嵌入在数字作品的数据文件中，或者以其它方式与数字作品相关联。如以上提及的，如果注解对应于数字作品的特定部分或数字作品中的某个位置，则注解可以包括可与该注解一起存储或者分开存储的一个或多个不变位置参考标识符。服务器系统102接收到的注解可与数字作品相关联地存储在注解数据库126中，如在框712处所示。与数字作品相关联地存储注解可以用任何合适的方式来实现，包括简单地将注解与该注解所属的数字作品的指示，且适当时与对应于该注解所属的作品中特定内容的不变位置参考标识符的指示一起存储在注解数据库126中。
在某些实现中，在框714处，可使注解对一个或多个其它计算设备可用。可通过多种方式来使得注解是可用的，包括将其置于诸如注解数据库126等远程数据存储上，直接从电子书阅读器300或其它客户端系统的存储器共享等。可以使注解是免费可用的，或者对其的访问可以要求如上述方法600中所述的有效授权凭证。
同样，在某些实现中，在框716处，注解、数字作品、授权凭证以及在电子书阅读器设备或其它客户端系统上本地地存储的其它内容可以与远程计算设备同步，反之亦然。客户端系统可与之同步的远程计算设备包括诸如服务器系统102等远程服务器、个人计算机、其它电子书阅读器设备或客户端系统等。作为示例而非限定，该同步可被安排成周期地发生(例如，每周、每隔一天、每五分钟等)，可以响应于一个或多个客户端设备上的内容中的改变发生，和/或在用户请求时发生。该同步操作的一个特定优点是使得用户能够在若干客户端设备中的每一个上访问他或她的整个数字内容库。例如，如果用户家里有PC，工作处有膝上型计算机，度假房里有电子书阅读器设备，这些客户端设备中的每个可彼此同步，使得用户能够访问他或她的所有数字作品而不考虑位置。同步可在客户端设备之间直接进行(基于对等)和/或通过网络经由远程数据存储进行。同样，如果用户的客户端系统之一丢失或被盗，则其内容会被存储在一个或多个其它位置并因而可被用户重新得到。
示例性报酬方法
建立用于数字作品的注解的市场的另一方面是向提交注解的用户提供激励。图8示出方法800的流程图，在该方法中，为注解支付金钱报酬，并且该报酬的部分或全部被分配给该注解的作者。在框802处，服务器系统102接收来自用户的对注解的支付，将该交易记录在交易信息数据库128中，并向用户提供访问该注解的授权凭证。从用户接收到的报酬可以直接支付给注解的作者，或者如图8的框804所示，交易信息数据库128可以将该支付的部分或全部存储在分开的帐户中以分配给作者。将报酬分配给作者能以用户对注解的满意度作为条件。在框806处，从用户接收关于该注解的反馈。在判定框808处，如果用户的反馈指示注解是令人满意的，则将在框804处存储的部分或全部支付分配给注解的作者。如果用户对注解不满意，则服务器系统102可以将支付退还给用户，如框810所示。
应注意“作者”和“用户”可以且通常不同于作为要对其作注解的数字作品的创建者、创作者、制作者、出版者、分发者或其它“源”的人、实体或设备。为进一步说明“作者”、“用户”和“源”之间的差别，考虑一个人A，其写了一本书，被出版者P以精装、简装、音频(例如“磁带上的书”)和/或数字形式(例如，可使用具有可视显示器的合适设备来观看的电子书)出版，这些形式的书被例如，通过诸如书店、读书俱乐部以及可通过计算机网络访问的在线市场等零售商店分发给公众。最后，出版商P可以出于促销的目的来授权这些在线市场对书的所有或所选部分进行有限的再现。
现在考虑一个人B，其希望为报纸、杂志、在线期刊、或者甚至为许诺销售该书在线市场中的一个撰写该书的评论。更具本发明的合适的实现，此人B的评论可作为(或可成为)A的书的注解，只要A、P和/或B给予为此的授权，并且此人B的评论能够在与A的书相同的在线市场和/或在其它在线市场或零售机构被购买、销售、交易、租借等。B的评论无需限制为写成独立于A的书来阅读的常规的自包含的评论文章。反之(或另外地)，根据本发明的实现，B可以把书评的部分或全部写成从属于该书的特定章节或段落并且当在该书的该特定章节或段落的上下文中阅读时能完全被理解的一组注解。
例如，B的评论可以聚焦在A的书中以B的感受看来尤其值得注意的文本段落或图片或图表，并将这些与评论的相对应部分链接或关联起来。换言之，B为这些段落或图像作注解，并且这些注解一起组成B的书评的部分或全部。
在A的原作及B的评论现在都可用的情况下，另一个人C将A的书以及B对其的评论作为数字作品来作注解成为可能。A和/或B如果愿意，可以对C的评注作出响应以及互相作出响应，所有这些评注和响应也进一步作为对A的书的注解而被添加，它们酌情适当限于或关联于有关段落和/或之前的注解并且它们在该书的有关章节或段落的上下文中阅读。
当消费者D购买、租借、交换或以其它方式使用时，使用来自A、B、C和P的适当授权来使整个注解集合或其子集(例如，仅C的注解、或仅A的响应、或仅在出版者P的命令下作的注解)可用可能是必要的(或者，在某些情况下，在合理使用的原则下或其它法律规定下无需事先授权)。因此，在本例中A和P可被认为是“源”；B、C和A(在对B和C的注解作出响应的角色中)可被认为是“作者”；并且D可被认为是“用户”。此外，特定在线市场M(或其中使得根据本发明的注解及被作注解的数字作品对用户可用的其它论坛)可被认为不是这些中的任一个，然而可以理解，在出版者P拥有市场M或反之的某些情况下，或者在A在没有常规出版者P的协助下通过M自行出版一本书的情况下，M可被看作是“源”。
以上描述了示例性注解、呈现和报酬方法600、700和800的细节。但是，应理解，取决于具体情况，方法600、700、800中的某些动作无需按所描述的次序执行，这些动作可被修改、组合和/或可被完全省略。例如，在方法700中，使注解对其它计算设备可用(714)以及将内容与远程设备同步(716)的动作可被省略。此外，来自一个方法的动作可以与来自另一个方法的动作以各种组合来组合。
同样，以上参考方法600、700和800的描述任何动作可由处理器或其它计算设备基于存储在与基于偏好的媒体警报系统和/或媒体系统相关联的一个或多个计算机可读介质上的指令来实现。
注解的示例性呈现
如将在下面参考图9-13描述的，数字作品的注解可与数字作品的显示同时或分开观看。注解能以图形形式来接收，包括手写。注解还可以包括在数字作品中加亮文本。在注解与数字作品中特定内容相关联的某些情况下，注解可通过使得该注解正常情况下被隐藏并仅当用户将光标或指针置于数字作品中的该特定内容的附近时才变为可见的方式来呈现。用于识别光标或指针在屏幕上显示的数字作品中的位置的技术在本领域是已知的。
此外，数字作品中可以包括标识具有注解的特定内容的指示符。例如，在文本数字作品中，指示符可作为位于文本中的脚注、图形图标、符号、字符或其它标记来出现。在数字作品是音频作品或视听作品的情况下，与数字作品中特定内容相关联的注解可由被提供来用于回放该数字作品的回放控制中的指示符来标识。在另一替换中，具有关于该数字作品中特定内容的注解的数字作品可以提供该数字作品的内容列表，列表中的指示符标识注解的位置。
现在转到图9中给出的示例，浏览器程序900可被用来向用户描绘网页。在图9所示的实现中，网页包括数字作品902的显示，这里包括无绳电话的手册。所示出的数字作品902提供将新电池组安装回电话听筒的说明。本例中的数字作品是文本形式的。
与数字作品902一起显示的是指示对该数字作品的注解的存在的指示符904、906。指示符904、906可以是与数字作品一起简单地显示的图形图标、字符、或符号。另选地，指示符904、906可以提供活动链接，当用户激活(例如检查或点击或在其上悬停)指示符904、906时，活动链接启动对应的注解的显示。
图9中示出的网页还包括用于显示数字作品902的注解的区域908。在某些实现中，注解908可以显示在与显示数字作品902的帧所分开的帧中。在数字作品的显示中激活指示符904和906可以引起注解部分908的出现。与用户已激活的指示符904、906相关联的特定注解在需要时可以表现为加亮的。注解还可以通过使用合适的编号系统来与指示符904、906相关联，在编号系统中指示符904、906中的编号对应于与每一注解的编号相相关联的编号(未示出)。
图10是提供根据本发明的一实现形成的另一示例性网页的web浏览器1000的简图。在该实现中，呈现文本注解，但在可重叠在数字作品1002的显示上出现的分开注解窗口1008中呈现。该实现尤其适合于其中用户可以激活指示符1004、1006来使注解窗口1008出现的环境。通常，注解窗口1008向用户提供一种关闭窗口的方式，从而用户可以继续阅读隐藏在注解窗口1008后的数字作品1002的文本，如果有的话。也可以使用标准的开窗口技术来准许用户在web浏览器1000的显示中改变注解窗口1008的大小或移动注解窗口1008。
在本发明的又一实现，如图11所示，web浏览器1100可以提供数字作品1102的网页显示，其中注解1104和1106以图形的手写格式来呈现。手写注解1104和1106可以正如他们从注解作者被接收时的样子来显示。当然，此类注解可以包括图形绘画以及手写。注解还可由与数字作品1102的文本一起显示的彩色的或加粗的高亮形式1108来提供。如图11所示，注解1104、1106和1108可被配置成重叠在数字作品的图像上来向用户呈现。
数字作品和/或注解还能以以音频或视听形式从作者接收并向用户呈现，如图12所示。图12描绘了具有包括回放控制1202的网页的web浏览器1200。回放控制1202提供了音频或视听文件的图形描绘并通常表示出音频或视听文件的时长。可提供附家回放控制1204来控制文件的回放。当数字作品是视听作品时，该数字作品的可视部分可以在网页的部分1206中显示。
对音频或视听作品的注解可由例如与回放控制1202的指示符1208和1210来指示。在图12所示的实现中，注解1208和1210与数字作品中的特定内容相关联。例如，当数字作品是图9-11所示的安装手册的录音时，注解可与在录音中出现的安装中的特定步骤相关联。例如，激活指示符1208可以引起窗口1212的出现，其具有与在音频回放中描述的特定安装步骤相关联的文本注解。
另选地，数字作品能以文本形式呈现，而注解是音频或视听格式。在数字作品的显示中激活指示符可以引起用于操作对数字作品的注解的回放的回放控制1202和控制1204的出现。如果数字作品的注解是图像，则激活数字作品中的注解指示符可以使诸如窗口1206等窗口出现为具有图像注解。从以上所述应理解，数字作品的注解的呈现与格式是没有限制的。
图13示出了本发明的其中以列表格式向用户呈现对数字作品中同一内容的多个注解的又一实现。图13中的web浏览器160被示为显示具有文本形式的数字作品1302的网页。数字作品1302中的指示符1304和1306指示一个或多个注解的存在。例如，只要用户激活指示符1304，注解窗口1308就可以出现，从而向用户提供注解列表。该列表中的注解可以按照通过参考某个准则所确定的次序来向用户呈现。例如，一个准则可以是先前已经看过并就注解的质量投过票的其他人向注解所分配的排序。具有较高排序的那些注解可以首先呈现。在其中向用户提供注解以交换金钱报酬的情况下，用户更可能选择先前被视为具有更高质量的那些注解。
用于对注解列表进行排序的另一准则是分配给每一个注解的价格。用户可以首先选择具有列出的最低价格的注解或最高价格的注解。用于确定注解次序的又一准则是每个注解的接收日期。例如，较新近的注解可以呈现在较旧的注解之上。本领域普通技术人员能够容易地认识到其它合适的准则。
在某些情况下，用户接收注解能以先前购买该注解所属的数字作品为条件。将购买底层数字作品作为接收注解的条件向用户提供了购买作品的激励。此外，底层数字作品的作者更可能向用户授予为数字作品添加注解的许可，在此类许可是必要的情况下。用户对底层数字作品的购买可以由交易信息数据库128中的交易管理器222记录，并之后当用户请求该数字作品的注解时被参考。
同样，如早些记述的，提交注解的作者可以指示该注解所属的数字作品中的特定内容。例如，在数字作品是一本书时，注解可以属于整个作品或该作品中的特定部分，例如，某一章、某些页、或某一页上的特定文本。
本发明的其它实现可以允许用户从凭证的一个或多个授权分发者接收访问注解的授权凭证。例如，仅提供数字作品的注解的实体可以与在线零售商有某种关系，这允许在线零售商将授权凭证给予数字作品的购买者，该授权凭证能够有效用于访问所购买的作品的来自该实体的注解。在另一情况下，注解的作者可以成为授权分发者并向他人分发授权凭证，从而允许他们访问该特定作者的注解。当作者希望向所选择的家庭、朋友等提供对他或她的注解的访问时，以此方式分发访问凭证可能是有利的。例如，班级或读书俱乐部中的一组学生可以各自为一数字作品作注解，并通过在组内适当地分发授权凭证来与他们组内的其他人共享其注解。在另一环境中，出版者可以是分发用于访问该出版者出版的作品的注解的有效凭证的授权分发者。
在本发明的又一些实现中，可以提供计算机实现的方法，该方法包括获得数字作品的第一表现形式，该第一表现形式包含一个或多个图像。获得数字作品的第二表现形式，该第二表现形式包含数字作品的内容，其是允许指示数字作品的特定内容的形式。该特定内容可以与在表现内容的一个或多个图像中的一个或多个位置相关。该方法还包括接收与数字作品的所指示的特定内容有关的数字作品注解，并在关于该数字作品的上下文中向用户提供注解。至于后者，可以向用户提供数字作品的一个或多个图像，以便用户将注解与数字作品中的特定内容显式地关联起来。例如，注解可被配置成重叠在数字作品的一个或多个图像上来向用户呈现。另选地，注解可被配置成与数字作品的一个或多个图像相邻地出现。该一个或多个图像还可包括注解所属的特定内容的指示。注解所属的特定内容的指示通常是从注解的作者接收的，但其也可以从其他人接收。
如之前记述的，注解可以从与数字作品的源不同的作者来接收。同样地，向其提供了注解的用户也可以与数字作品的源不同。应认识到，数字作品的注解还可从属于另一作者的注解。
在某些实现中，可通过在线市场来向用户提供注解。在需要时，注解可连同数字作品一起通过在线市场提供给用户。
尽管本发明的若干示例性实现已在上面示出并描述，但应认识到，在不背离本发明的精神和范围的情况下能够在其中做出各种改变。因此，本发明的范围应从所附权利要求书及其等效方案来确定。

Claims (33)

1.一种至少部分地由电子书阅读器设备实现的为数字作品作注解的方法，所述方法包括：
接收(706)关于所述数字作品的特定部分的注解；
将对应于所述数字作品的特定部分的不变位置参考标识符附加(710)到所述注解；以及
与所述数字作品相关联地存储(712)所述注解。
2.如权利要求1所述的方法，其特征在于，所述注解存储到远程数据存储。
3.如权利要求2所述的方法，其特征在于，存储在所述远程数据存储的注解可由至少一个其它电子书阅读器设备访问。
4.如权利要求2所述的方法，其特征在于，存储在所述远程数据存储的注解需要授权凭证才能访问。
5.如权利要求1所述的方法，其特征在于，所述注解存储到所述电子书阅读器设备的本地存储器。
6.如权利要求5所述的方法，其特征在于，还包括将所述数字作品和所述注解传送到远程数据存储。
7.如权利要求5所述的方法，其特征在于，还包括将存储在所述电子书阅读器上的内容与远程数据存储进行同步。
8.如权利要求7所述的方法，其特征在于，所述同步是周期性地执行的。
9.如权利要求7所述的方法，其特征在于，所述同步是响应于存储在所述电子书阅读器设备上的内容的改变来执行的。
10.如权利要求1所述的方法，其特征在于，还包括将所述注解传送到另一电子书阅读器设备。
11.如权利要求1所述的方法，其特征在于，所述数字作品被划分成多个片段，并且其中该数字作品的每一个片段具有为其分配的不变位置参考标识符，使得每个不变位置参考标识符被唯一地分配给该数字作品的对应片段，而不考虑显示该数字作品的显示条件。
12.如权利要求11所述的方法，其特征在于，所述不变位置参考标识符与所述数字作品分开，使得所述数字作品不被所述位置参考标识符所改变。
13.如权利要求1所述的方法，其特征在于，所述位置参考标识符存储在与所述数字作品分开的索引文件中。
14.如权利要求1所述的方法，其特征在于，所述位置参考标识符嵌入在所述数字作品的数据文件中。
15.一个或多个包含用于实现如权利要求1所述的方法的计算机可执行指令的计算机可读介质。
16.一种在电子书阅读器设备上呈现注解的方法，所述方法包括：
接收(606)数字作品的注解；
与所述数字作品相关联地存储(608)所述注解；
接收(612)授予对所述注解的访问的授权凭证；以及
如果所述授权凭证有效(616)，则在所述电子书阅读器设备上关于所述数字作品的上下文中呈现(618)该数字作品的所述注解。
17.如权利要求16所述的方法，其特征在于，所述数字作品的注解是以下列格式中的一种或多种来接收的：图形格式、文本格式、音频格式、以及多媒体格式。
18.如权利要求16所述的方法，其特征在于，提供所述注解以使得该注解能够与所述数字作品的显示同时可见。
19.如权利要求16所述的方法，其特征在于，所述注解与所述数字作品中的特定内容相关联，并且其中所述注解同与所述数字作品中的特定内容相关联的不变位置参考标识符一起提供。
20.如权利要求16所述的方法，其特征在于，提供所述注解以使得所述注解通常被隐藏，并且当光标或指针置于所述数字作品中的特定内容附近时在所述电子书阅读器上变得可见。
21.如权利要求16所述的方法，其特征在于，所述授权凭证专用于所述接收到的注解。
22.如权利要求16所述的方法，其特征在于，还包括向生成凭证的有效性的指示的确认系统提交所述授权凭证。
23.如权利要求16所述的方法，其特征在于，所述注解是从远程数据存储接收的。
24.如权利要求16所述的方法，其特征在于，所述注解是从另一电子书阅读器设备接收的。
25.如权利要求16所述的方法，其特征在于，还包括呈现所述数字作品可用的注解的索引。
26.一个或多个包含用于实现如权利要求16所述的方法的计算机可执行指令的计算机可读介质。
27.一种电子书阅读器设备(300)，包括：
处理器(316)；以及
与所述处理器通信的存储器(314)，所述存储器包含：
数字作品(318)；
与所述数字作品相关联的注解(320)，所述注解与所述数字作品分开，使得所述数字作品不因提供所述注解而改变；以及
多个唯一的不变位置参考标识符(500)，
其中，所述数字作品被划分成多个片段并且所述数字作品的每个片段被分配所述不变位置参考标识符之一，使得每个不变位置参考标识符被唯一地分配给所述数字作品的对应片段。
28.如权利要求27所述的电子书阅读器设备，其特征在于，所述存储器还包含授权对所述注解的访问的授权凭证。
29.如权利要求27所述的电子书阅读器设备，其特征在于，所述存储器还包含引用所述数字作品中的内容的目录，所述目录是基于对应于所引用的内容的不变位置参考标识符来来引用该内容的。
30.如权利要求27所述的电子书阅读器设备，其特征在于，所述存储器还包含与所述数字作品相关联的可用注解的索引。
31.如权利要求30所述的电子书阅读器设备，其特征在于，所述可用注解的索引包括存储在所述电子书阅读器设备的本地存储器中的注解以及存储在所述电子书阅读器设备远程的存储器中的注解。
32.如权利要求27所述的电子书阅读器设备，其特征在于，所述数字作品发自源并且所述注解由作者创建，并且其中所述注解的作者和所述数字作品的源是不同的。
33.如权利要求27所述的电子书阅读器设备，其特征在于，所述数字作品的注解包括下列项中的一个或多个：图形注解、文本注解、音频注解、以及多媒体注解。
