Abstract
The present invention is a system and method for time synchronizing a plurality of base stations in a wireless communication system. The system determines an estimate of a timing accuracy associated with each base station. When a base stations's timing accuracy is over a threshold, the system determines if there is a neighboring base station with a better timing accuracy. The base station over the threshold is adjusted in response to an estimated difference between that base station and the neighboring base station.
Claims (13)
1. A method for synchronizing a plurality of base stations, the method characterized by the steps of:
identifying a target base station that is out of synchronization among the plurality of base stations;
selecting at least one neighboring base station that has better timing quality than the target base station;
measuring a timing difference between the target base station and the at least one neighboring one base station; and adjusting timing in the target base station based on said timing difference.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the target base station transmits a signal for synchronization to the neighboring base station, and the neighboring base station determines said timing difference.
3. The method of claim 1 wherein the neighboring base station transmits a signal for synchronization to the target base station, and the target base station determines said timing difference.
4. The method of claim 1 wherein the target base station and the neighboring base station each transmit a signal for synchronization, and a user equipment determines said timing difference.
5. The method of claim 1 further comprising a step of periodically detecting end recording a timing variance between all base stations.
6. The method of claim 5 wherein the target base station is identified when the timing variance exceeds a predetermined threshold.
7. A radio network controller (RNC) for synchronizing a plurality of base stations, the RNC comprising:
means for identifying a target base station that is out of synchronization among the plurality of base stations;
means for identifying at least one neighboring base station having better timing quality that the target base station;
means for instructing measurement of a timing difference between the target base station and the neighboring base station; and means for adjusting timing in the target base station based on said timing difference.

8. The RNC of claim 7 wherein the means for detecting a target base station comprises:
a database for storing timing and timing quality information of the base stations;
means for tracking timing of the base stations; and means for calculating a timing variance between the base stations;
whereby the target base station is identified when the timing variance exceeds predetermined threshold.

9. A system for synchronizing a plurality of base stations in a communication system, the system characterized by:
at least one user equipment;
a target base station that is out of synchronization among the plurality of base stations;
at least one neighboring base station having better timing quality than the target base station; and a radio network controller for instructing measurement of a timing difference between the target base station and the neighboring base station, and adjusting timing in the target base station based on said timing difference.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein the target base station transmits a signal for synchronization to the neighboring base station, and the neighboring base station determines said timing difference.
11. The system of claim 9 wherein the neighboring base station transmits a signal for synchronization to the target base station, and the target base station determines said timing difference.
12. The system of claim 9 wherein both the target base station and the neighboring base station each transmit a signal for synchronization, and said user equipment determines said timing difference.
13. The system of claim 9 wherein the plurality of base stations are associated each other according to their timing quality, whether the timing accuracy of the base stations having lower timing quality depends on timing accuracy of the base stations having higher timing quality.
