Abstract

In conjunction with a data communication network (53) carrying multiple telephony signals and allowing for connection of telephone sets (17), a system and method in which two external feeders (55a, 55b) connect to the data network (53) at two distinct points via two distinct devices. The data network can be based on dedicated wiring or can use existing in premises medium such as telephone, powerlines or CATV wiring. In the latter case, the wiring can still carry the original service for which it was installed. The external telephone connections can be based on the traditional PSTN, CATV network, cellular telephone network or any other telephone service provider network, using specific adapter for any medium used. In the case of connection to a POTS telephone signal, VoIP gateway (or any other converter) is required.

Claims (14)

1. A system (100) for coupling first and second telephone sets (17a, 17b) to multiple telephone services (11, 91) using a wired local area network (53) in a building carrying multiple digitized telephone channels, the system comprising:
a wired (73, 81) local area network (53) in a building;
a first service adapter (55a, 82) coupled to the network in a first point (88e) and couplable to a first telephone service (11), the adapter operative to couple the first telephone service to at least one second digitized telephone channel; and a second service adapter (55b), couplable to a second telephone service (91) and operative to couple the second telephone service to at least one second digitized telephone channel;
characterized by:
the second service adapter couples to the network in a distinct second point (72d, 88f);
said telephone sets being analog (POTS) telephone sets;
and the system further comprising:
a first telephone adapter (64a) coupled to the network, couplable to said first telephone set (17a) and operative to couple the first telephone set to a third digitized telephone channel;
a second telephone adaptor (64b) coupled to the network, couplable to said second telephone set (17b) and operative to couple the second telephone set to a fourth digitized telephone channel; and a router (52) coupled to the network and operative to couple said first and third digitized telephone channels, for allowing said first telephone set to be coupled to said first telephone service, and simultaneously to couple said second and fourth digitized telephone channels, for allowing said second telephone set to be coupled to said second telephone service.
2. The system of claim 1 further comprising a gateway (55) coupled to the network and to a telephone services for coupling an analog (POTS) telephone service signal to the network, the gateway being operative to convert at least one analog (POTS) telephone service (91) to digital telephony signals.
3. The system of claim 1 wherein the network wiring comprises a wire pair (73, 81) coupled via one or more outlets (72, 88).
4. The system of claim 3, wherein the wire pair is one out of telephone wiring (89), CATV wiring and powerline wiring (81).
5. The system of claim 1 wherein the at least part of at least one adapter is integrated into an outlet (141,151).
6. The system of claim 1 wherein at least one of the telephone services is based on cellular telephone network (213), and the system further comprises a cellular adapter (212) operative for communicating with a cellular telephone network.
7. The system of claim 6, wherein the adapter comprises a cellular telephone device (241).
8. A method for upgrading an existing wired (73, 81) local area network (53) in a building to allow for coupling first and second telephone sets (17a, 17b) to multiple telephone services (11, 91) using digitized telephone channels over the network, the method comprising:
coupling a first service adapter (55a, 82) to the network at a first point (88e), the first service adapter being couplable to a first telephone service (11) and being operative to couple the first telephone service to at least one first digitized telephone channel; and coupling a second service adapter (55b) to the network, the second service adapter being couplable to a second telephone service (91) and being operative to couple the second telephone service to at least one second digitized telephone channel;
characterized in that:
the second service adapter is coupled to the network wiring in a distinct second point (72d, 88f);
the network is operative to simultaneously carry multiple digitized telephone channels;

the telephone sets are analog (POTS) telephone sets; and the method further comprises:
coupling a first telephone adaptor (64a) to the network, the first telephone adapter being coupable to said first telephone set (17a) and being operative to couple the first telephone set to a third digitized telephone channel;
coupling a second telephone adaptor (64b) to the network, the second telephone adapter being coupable to said second telephone set (17b) and being operative to couple the second telephone set to a fourth digitized telephone channel;
coupling a router (52) to the network, the router being operative to couple said first, second end third digitized telephone channels, for allowing said first telephone set to be coupled to said first telephone service, and simultaneously to couple said second and fourth digitized telephone channels, for allowing said second telephone set to be coupled to said second telephone service.
9. The method of claim 8 further comprising coupling a gateway (55) to the network and to a telephone service, the gateway being operative to convert at least one analog (POTS) telephone service (91) to distal telephony signals, for coupling the analog (POTS) telephone service signal to the network.
10. The method of claim 8 wherein the network wiring comprises a wire pair (73, 81) coupled to one or more outlets (72, 88).
11. The method of claim 10, wherein the wire pair is one out of telephone wiring (89), CATV wiring and powerline wiring (81).
12. The method of claim 8 wherein the at least part of at least one adapter is integrated into an outlet (141, 151).
13. The method of claim 8 wherein at least one of the telephone services is based on a cellular, telephone network (213), and the method further comprises providing a cellular adapter (212) operative for communicating with the cellular telephone network.
14. The method of claim 13, wherein the adapter comprises a cellular telephone device (241).
