Abstract
A trocar system (10, 12) includes a cannula (100, 500) having a cannula head (110, 510) and a cannula tube (300, 600), and an obturator (400, 700) having a cap and either a rounded tip or a cutting blade. The head and cap form an ergonomically shaped bulbous handle. At least a portion of an outer surface of the cannula head (110, 510) may include a resilient non-slip material (140).
The cannula head (110, 510) may also include a monolithic housing (130) having a port (160) with a Luer Lock fitting and an integrally formed passageway (150) for receiving a stopcock valve (170).
The cannula head (110, 510) may also include a monolithic housing (130) having a port (160) with a Luer Lock fitting and an integrally formed passageway (150) for receiving a stopcock valve (170).
Claims (34)
1. A cannula head-(110, 510) for use in a trocar system (10, 12) having an obturator (400, 700), said cannula head (110, 510) comprising:
a housing (130) having a first passageway (136) extending therethrough for receiving the obturator (400, 700), said housing (130) having a distal opening (134) and a proximal opening (135) to said first passageway (136); and characterized by:
a lower seal (180) attachable across said first passageway (136);
a releasably attachable upper seal (200) connectable to said housing (130) across said proximal opening (135);
wherein an outer surface of said housing (130) comprises a reduced distal portion, an enlarged proximal portion, an enlarged top portion, and a reduced bottom portion; and wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of said housing (130) comprises a resilient non-slip material (140).
a housing (130) having a first passageway (136) extending therethrough for receiving the obturator (400, 700), said housing (130) having a distal opening (134) and a proximal opening (135) to said first passageway (136); and characterized by:
a lower seal (180) attachable across said first passageway (136);
a releasably attachable upper seal (200) connectable to said housing (130) across said proximal opening (135);
wherein an outer surface of said housing (130) comprises a reduced distal portion, an enlarged proximal portion, an enlarged top portion, and a reduced bottom portion; and wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of said housing (130) comprises a resilient non-slip material (140).
2. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 1 wherein said resilient non-slip material (140) extends along at least some of a bottom portion of said housing (130).
3. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 1 wherein said resilient non-slip material (140) extends around said distal opening (134).
4. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 1 wherein said resilient non-slip material (140) forms a seal between said distal opening (134) and a cannula tube (300, 600).
5. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 1 wherein said resilient non-slip material (140) extends along at least some of a bottom portion of said housing (130) and around said distal opening (134).
6. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 1 wherein said housing (130) defines a recess (132) for receiving said resilient non-slip material (140).
7. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 1 wherein said lower seat (180) comprises a flapper valve (190).
8. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 1 wherein said a first passageway comprises an axis (A) and wherein said housing is asymmetrically disposed relative to said axis (A).
9. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 1 wherein said housing (130) comprises a reduced distal portion, an enlarged proximal portion, an enlarged front portion, and a reduced rear portion.
10. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 1 wherein said housing (130) comprises a port (160) having a Luer Lock fitting, said port (160) being connectable in fluid communication with said first passageway (136),
11. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 1 wherein said housing (130) comprises a port (160) having a Luer Lock fitting, and a second passageway (150) for receiving a stopcock valve (170) for controlling fluid through said port (160) into said first passageway (136) and out of said first passageway (136).
12. A cannula head (110, 510) for use in a trocar system (10, 12) having an obturator (400, 700), said cannula head (110, 510) comprising:
a housing (130) having a first passageway (136) extending therethrough for receiving the obturator (400, 700), said housing (130) having a distal opening (134) and a proximal opening (138) to said first passageway (136);
a port (160) having a Luer Lock fitting, said port (160) extending from said housing and being connectable in fluid communication with said first passageway (136); and characterized by:
said housing (130) comprising a second passageway (150) having a first end opening into said first passageway (136) and a second end opening on said housing for receiving a stopcock valve, and wherein said port (160) opens onto said second passageway (150); and wherein said housing (130), said second passageway (150), and said port (160) with said Luer lock fitting are monolithic.
a housing (130) having a first passageway (136) extending therethrough for receiving the obturator (400, 700), said housing (130) having a distal opening (134) and a proximal opening (138) to said first passageway (136);
a port (160) having a Luer Lock fitting, said port (160) extending from said housing and being connectable in fluid communication with said first passageway (136); and characterized by:
said housing (130) comprising a second passageway (150) having a first end opening into said first passageway (136) and a second end opening on said housing for receiving a stopcock valve, and wherein said port (160) opens onto said second passageway (150); and wherein said housing (130), said second passageway (150), and said port (160) with said Luer lock fitting are monolithic.
13. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 12 wherein said housing (130) comprises a reduced distal portion, an enlarged proximal portion, an enlarged front portion, and a reduced rear portion.
14. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 12 further comprising a stopcock valve (170) receivable in said second passageway (150) for regulating the flow of fluid through said port (160), said stopcock valve (170) being receivable in said second passageway (150).
15. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 14 wherein said stopcock valve (170) comprises a first position for allowing pressurized fluid through said port (160) into said first passageway (136), a second position for inhibiting transfer of fluid between said first passageway (136) and said port (160), and a third position for venting pressurized fluid from said first passageway (136).
16. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 12 wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of the housing (130) comprises a resilient non-slip material (140).
17. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 12 further comprising a lower seal (180) attachable across said first passageway (136).
18. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 12 further comprising a releasably attachable upper seal (200) connectable to said housing (130) across said proximal opening (135).
19. The cannula head (110, 510) of claim 14 wherein said stopcock is operable by a thumb of a user.
20. A cannula head (110, 510) for use in a trocar system (10, 12) having an obturator (400, 700), said cannula head (110, 510) comprising:
a housing (130)having a first passageway (136) extending therethrough for receiving the obturator (400, 700), said housing (130) having a distal opening (134) and a proximal opening (135) to said first passageway (136); and characterized by:
a lower seat (180) attachable across said first passageway (136);
a releasably attachable upper seal (200) connectable to said housing (130) across said proximal opening (135); and wherein an outer surface of said housing (130) comprises a reduced distal portion, an enlarged proximal portion, an enlarged top portion, and a reduced bottom portion.
a housing (130)having a first passageway (136) extending therethrough for receiving the obturator (400, 700), said housing (130) having a distal opening (134) and a proximal opening (135) to said first passageway (136); and characterized by:
a lower seat (180) attachable across said first passageway (136);
a releasably attachable upper seal (200) connectable to said housing (130) across said proximal opening (135); and wherein an outer surface of said housing (130) comprises a reduced distal portion, an enlarged proximal portion, an enlarged top portion, and a reduced bottom portion.
21. A cannula head (110, 510) for use in a trocar system {10, 12) having an obturator 400, 700), said cannula head (110, 510) comprising:
a housing (130) having a first passageway (136) extending therethrough for receiving the obturator (400, 700), said housing (130) having a distal opening (134) and a proximal opening (135) to said first passageway (136) for receiving the obturator (400, 700);
a port (180) having a Luer Lock fitting, said port (160) being connectable in fluid communication with said first passageway (136):
a stopcock valve (170) having a lever (172) installed in said housing (130) for regulating the flow of fluid through said port (160);
at least a portion of an outer surface of said housing (130) comprising a resilient non-slip material (140);
a flapper valve (190) disposed across said first passageway (136) within said housing (130);
a releasably attachable seal (200) connectable to said housing (130) across said proximal opening (135); and wherein an outer surface of said housing (130) comprises a reduced distal portion, an enlarged proximal portion, an enlarged forward portion, and a reduced rear portion.
a housing (130) having a first passageway (136) extending therethrough for receiving the obturator (400, 700), said housing (130) having a distal opening (134) and a proximal opening (135) to said first passageway (136) for receiving the obturator (400, 700);
a port (180) having a Luer Lock fitting, said port (160) being connectable in fluid communication with said first passageway (136):
a stopcock valve (170) having a lever (172) installed in said housing (130) for regulating the flow of fluid through said port (160);
at least a portion of an outer surface of said housing (130) comprising a resilient non-slip material (140);
a flapper valve (190) disposed across said first passageway (136) within said housing (130);
a releasably attachable seal (200) connectable to said housing (130) across said proximal opening (135); and wherein an outer surface of said housing (130) comprises a reduced distal portion, an enlarged proximal portion, an enlarged forward portion, and a reduced rear portion.
22. A cannula (100, 500) for use in a trocar system (10, 12) having an obturator (400, 700), said cannula (100, 500) characterized by:
a cannula head (110, 510) and a reusable and releasably attachable cannula tube (300, 600) defining a passageway (136)-extending.
therethrough, and wherein said cannula head (110, 510) comprises a housing (130) having an outer gripable surface comprising a resilient material (140), a portion of said resilient material disposed for engaging said cannula tube (300, 600) and forming a seal between said housing (130) and said cannula tube (300, 600).
a cannula head (110, 510) and a reusable and releasably attachable cannula tube (300, 600) defining a passageway (136)-extending.
therethrough, and wherein said cannula head (110, 510) comprises a housing (130) having an outer gripable surface comprising a resilient material (140), a portion of said resilient material disposed for engaging said cannula tube (300, 600) and forming a seal between said housing (130) and said cannula tube (300, 600).
23. The cannula (100, 500) of claim 22 wherein said cannula tube (300, 600) comprises titanium.
24. The cannula (100, 500) of claim 22 wherein said cannula head (110, 510) and said attachable cannula tube (300, 600) are connectable with a bayonet connector.
25. A trocar system (10, 12) comprising:
a cannula head (110, 510) of claim 1 and a cannula tube (300, 600);
an obturator (400, 700) receivable in said cannula head (110, 510) and cannula tube (300, 600).

an obturator (400, 700) receivable in said cannula head (110, 510) and cannula tube (300, 600).
26. A trocar system (10, 12) comprising:
a cannula head (110, 510) of claim 12 and a cannula tube (300, 600); and an obturator (400, 700) receivable in said cannula head (110, 510) and cannula tube (300, 600).
a cannula head (110, 510) of claim 12 and a cannula tube (300, 600); and an obturator (400, 700) receivable in said cannula head (110, 510) and cannula tube (300, 600).
27. A trocar system (10, 12) comprising:
a cannula head (110, 510) of claim 20 and a cannula tube (300, 600); and an obturator (400, 700) receivable in said cannula head (110, 510) and cannula tube (300, 600).
a cannula head (110, 510) of claim 20 and a cannula tube (300, 600); and an obturator (400, 700) receivable in said cannula head (110, 510) and cannula tube (300, 600).
28. A trocar system (10, 12) comprising:
a cannula head (110, 510) of claim 21 and a cannula tube (300, 600); and an obturator (400, 700) receivable in said cannula head (110, 510) and cannula tube (300, 800).
a cannula head (110, 510) of claim 21 and a cannula tube (300, 600); and an obturator (400, 700) receivable in said cannula head (110, 510) and cannula tube (300, 800).
29. A trocar system (10. 12) comprising:
a cannula (100, 500) of claim 22; and an obturator (400, 700) receivable in said cannula (100, 500).
a cannula (100, 500) of claim 22; and an obturator (400, 700) receivable in said cannula (100, 500).
30. An ergonomically shaped trocar system (10, 12) comprising:
a cannula (100, 500) having a proximal head;
an obturator (400, 700) having a proximal cap; and characterized by:
said head and said cap being shaped so that when said obturator (400, 700) is inserted into said cannula (100, 500) with the head and cap in alignment, said head and said cap together comprise a handle having a reduced distal portion, an enlarged convex proximal portion, an enlarged forward portion, and a reduced rear portion.
a cannula (100, 500) having a proximal head;
an obturator (400, 700) having a proximal cap; and characterized by:
said head and said cap being shaped so that when said obturator (400, 700) is inserted into said cannula (100, 500) with the head and cap in alignment, said head and said cap together comprise a handle having a reduced distal portion, an enlarged convex proximal portion, an enlarged forward portion, and a reduced rear portion.
31. The trocar system (10, 12) of claim 31 wherein at least a portion of an outer surface of said head comprises a resilient non-slip material (140).
32. The trocar system (10, 12), of claim 31 wherein said obturator (700) comprises a locking mechanism (900) disposed in said cap for locking a shield (710) in a first position over a blade (740) when said obturator (700) is withdrawn from said cannula (100, 500) and unlocking said shield (710) when said obturator (700) is inserted into said cannula (100, 500) so that said shield (710) is retractable to a second position to expose said blade (740) when a force is applied to said shield (710).
33. A method for forming a monolithic cannula head (110, 510) for use with a trocar system (10, 12) having an obturator (400, 700), the method characterized by:
integrally forming a housing (130) having a port (160) extending from said housing and having a Luer Lock fitting, the housing (130) having a first passageway (136) extending therethrough for receiving the obturator (400, 700), the housing (130) having a distal opening (134) and a proximal opening (135) to the first passageway (136), the housing having a second passageway (150) having a first end opening into said first passageway (136) and a second end opening on said housing for receiving a stopcock valve, and the port (160) being connectable in fluid communication with the first passageway (136).
integrally forming a housing (130) having a port (160) extending from said housing and having a Luer Lock fitting, the housing (130) having a first passageway (136) extending therethrough for receiving the obturator (400, 700), the housing (130) having a distal opening (134) and a proximal opening (135) to the first passageway (136), the housing having a second passageway (150) having a first end opening into said first passageway (136) and a second end opening on said housing for receiving a stopcock valve, and the port (160) being connectable in fluid communication with the first passageway (136).
34. The method of claim 34 wherein the integrally forming step further comprises integrally forming an outer recess (132) on the housing (130) for receiving a non-slip material (140).
