Abstract
A method and device for the delivery of a substance into skin via the rotational movement of a microabrader device reduces the effects of operator variability. The method includes applying a substance to an area of a patient's skin through the rotational movement of microprotrusions. The movement of the microprotrusions can be imparted by a spring device or the like present in the microabrader device or the motion of the operator through the handle of the microabrader device. The rotational motion localizes the administration of the drug or vaccine dosage in the abraded skin area. The device can include means for monitoring pressure of the device against the skin and thereby promote consistency between applications and control of penetration depth. The substance, drug or vaccine may be placed on the microprotrusions and a reconstituting liquid included in the microabrader device.
Claims (10)
1. A rotary abrader device comprising:
a housing comprising at least one housing element, wherein said at least one housing element is selected from the group consisting of an upper housing, a lower housing, an internal housing, an external housing, and combinations thereof;
at least one housing element adapted to rotate;
at least one array of microprotrusions adapted to disrupt the skin of a subject when rotated;
a mechanical rotating means for mechanically rotating said at least one array of microprotrusions against the skin of a subject with sufficient force to disrupt and substantially penetrate the stratum corneum of the subject without piercing said stratum corneum.
a housing comprising at least one housing element, wherein said at least one housing element is selected from the group consisting of an upper housing, a lower housing, an internal housing, an external housing, and combinations thereof;
at least one housing element adapted to rotate;
at least one array of microprotrusions adapted to disrupt the skin of a subject when rotated;
a mechanical rotating means for mechanically rotating said at least one array of microprotrusions against the skin of a subject with sufficient force to disrupt and substantially penetrate the stratum corneum of the subject without piercing said stratum corneum.
2. The rotary abrader device of claim 1, further comprising at least one substance delivery port adapted for applying a substance to the skin of said subject at a delivery site prior to or simultaneously with the mechanical rotation of said array at said delivery site.
3. The rotary abrader device of claim 2, wherein the housing further comprises at least one stationary element.
3. The rotary abrading device of claim 3, wherein the at least one element adapted to rotate is further adapted for manual rotation.
3. The rotary abrading device of claim 3, wherein the at least one element adapted to rotate is further adapted for manual rotation.
4. The rotary abrader device of claim 1, further comprising:
an interlock mechanism disposed within said abrader housing for holding said microabrader array stationary until deactivated
an interlock mechanism disposed within said abrader housing for holding said microabrader array stationary until deactivated
5. The rotary device according to claim 4, wherein said interlock mechanism comprises:
a button protruding through the abrader housing, said button being coupled to a longitudinally moveable rod; and a spring within said abrader housing and surrounding said longitudinally moveable rod, wherein said microabrader array is coupled to an end of said longitudinally moveable rod so that said spring holds said microabrader array stationary until said button is depressed thereby deactivating said interlock mechanism.
a button protruding through the abrader housing, said button being coupled to a longitudinally moveable rod; and a spring within said abrader housing and surrounding said longitudinally moveable rod, wherein said microabrader array is coupled to an end of said longitudinally moveable rod so that said spring holds said microabrader array stationary until said button is depressed thereby deactivating said interlock mechanism.
