Abstract

A novel encoding system, compositions for use therein and methods for determining the source, location and/or identity of a particular item or component of interest is provided. In particular, the present invention utilizes a collection of one or more sizes of populations of semiconductor nanocrystals having characteristic spectral emissions, to "track" the source or location of an item of interest or to identify a particular item of interest. The semiconductor nanocrystals used in the inventive compositions can be selected to emit a desired wavelength to produce a characteristic spectral emission in narrow spectral widths, and with a symmetric, nearly Gaussian line shape, by changing the composition and size of the semiconductor nanocrystal. Additionally, the intensity of the emission at a particular characteristic wavelength can also be varied, thus enabling the use of binary or higher order encoding schemes.

Claims (30)

1. A composition comprising of one or more populations of member semiconductor nanocrystals, wherein each population has a distinct characteristic spectral emission.
2. A composition comprising:
(a) a support; and (b) the composition of one or more populations of member semiconductor nanocrystals of claim 1 associated with the support, to provide a support-nanocrystal conjugate.
3. A composition comprising:
(a) a composition comprising of one or more populations of member semiconductor nanocrystals, wherein each population has a distinct characteristic spectral emission; and (b) an item of interest associated with the composition, to provide a nanocrystal-item of interest conjugate.
4. The composition of claim 2, further comprising a item of interest associated with the support-nanocrystal conjugate.
5. The composition of claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, wherein the characteristic spectral emission is a wavelength of emitted light, an intensity of emitted light, or both an intensity of emitted light and a wavelength of emitted light.
6. The composition of claim 2, 3 or 4, wherein the association is selected from the group consisting of covalent, hydrophobic, van der Waals forces, adsorption, and interaction between first and second members of a binding pair.
7. The composition of claim 6, wherein the association is the interaction between first and second members of a binding pair.
8. The composition of claim 7, wherein the first member of the binding pair comprises an antibody or binding portion or fragment thereof, an antigen, avidin, streptavidin, or biotin.
9. The composition of claim 2 or 4, wherein the support comprises cellulose, polystyrene, polyacrylamide, silica gels, polystyrene cross-linked with divinylbenzene, latex, dimethylacrylamide, dimethylacrylamide cross-linked with N,N'-bis-acryloyl ethylene diamine, low molecular weight non-cross-linked polystyrene, polyacrylate, polyimide, polyethylene, polyvinyl, poly-diacetylene, polyphenylene-vinylene, polypeptide, polysaccharide, polysulfone, polypyrrole, polyimidazole, polythiophene, polyether, epoxies, siloxane, polyphosphate, hydrogel, agarose, silica, glass, grafted co-polymers, pore-glass and glass coated with a hydrophobic polymer.
10. The composition of claim 2 or 4, wherein the support is in the form of a bead, a pellet, a disk, a capillary, a hollow fiber, a needle or a solid fiber.
11. The composition of claim 3 or 4, wherein said item of interest is selected from the group consisting of a consumer product, an identification tag, a security tag, a chemical compound, a biomolecule, a fluid and a solid.
12. The composition of claim 3 or 4, wherein the item of interest is an oligonucleotide, a polypeptide, or a sugar moiety.
13. The composition of claim 1, 2, 3 or 4, wherein each nanocrystal member of each population of the collection comprises:
a core comprising a first semiconductor material; and a shell layer overcoating the core, the shell comprising a second semiconductor material having a band gap greater than that of the core, wherein the first semiconductor material and the second semiconductor material are the same or different.
14. The composition of claim 13, wherein the core is a Group II-VI, Group III-V or Group IV semiconductor.
15. The composition of claim 13, wherein the core comprises CdS, CdSe, CdTe, ZnS, ZnSe, ZnTe, MgTe, GaAs, GaP, GaSb, GaN, HgS, HgSe, HgTe, InAs, InP, InSb, InN, A1As, A1P, A1Sb, A1S, PbS, PbSe, Ge, Si, an alloy thereof, or a mixture thereof.
16. The composition of claim 15, wherein the shell comprises ZnO, ZnS, ZnSe, ZnTe, CdO, CdS, CdSe, CdTe, MgS, MgSe, GaAs, GaN, GaP, GaAs, GaSb, HgO, HgS, HgSe, HgTe, InAs, InN, InP, InSb, A1As, A1N, A1P, A1Sb, an alloy thereof, or a mixture thereof.
17. The composition of claim 13, wherein the core is CdSe and the shell is ZnS.
18. The composition of claim 13, wherein the core is a member of a monodisperse particle population.
19. The composition of claim 18, wherein the monodisperse particle population is characterized in that when irradiated the population emits light in a spectral range of about 40-60 nm full width at half maximum (FWHM).
20. The composition of claim 19, wherein the monodisperse particle population is characterized in that when irradiated the population emits light in a spectral range of about 12-15nm full width at half maximum (FWHM).
21. The composition of claim 18, wherein the monodisperse particle population is characterized in that it exhibits no more than about a 10% rms deviation in the diameter of the core.
22. The composition of claim 21, wherein the monodisperse particle population is characterized in that it exhibits no more than about 5% rms deviation in the diameter of the core.
23. A method for identifying an item of interest, comprising:
(a) providing the composition of claim 1 or 2;
(b) associating the composition with the item of interest to provide an encoded item of interest;
(c) subjecting the encoded item of interest to a light source to obtain the characteristic spectral emission; and (d) correlating said spectral emission with the identity of said item of interest.
24. A library of compounds, wherein each compound in the library is bound to an individual support, each support having associated therewith one or more populations of semiconductor nanocrystals, each population having a distinct characteristic spectral emissions.
25. The library of claim 24, wherein each nanocrystal member comprises:
a core comprising a first semiconductor material; and a shell layer overcoating the core, the shell comprising a second semiconductor material having a band gap greater than that of the core, wherein the first semiconductor material and the second semiconductor material are the same or different.
26. The library of claim 25, wherein the characteristic spectral emission is a wavelength of emitted light, an intensity of emitted light, or both a wavelength and an intensity of emitted light.
27. A method for identifying a compound having a characteristic of interest comprising:
(a) providing a library of member compounds, wherein each member of said library of compounds is attached to a support, and wherein each support also has attached thereto or embedded therein one or more populations of semiconductor nanocrystals each population having distinct characteristic spectral emissions;
(b) testing each member of said library of compounds to identify compounds having a characteristic of interest;
(c) subjecting each support to a light source to obtain the characteristic spectral emission; and (d) correlating the spectral emission with the identity of the compound having the characteristic of interest.
28. A method for identifying a molecule having a characteristic of interest comprising:
providing a first library of one or more member molecules, wherein each member of said first library is attached to a first support having attached thereto or embedded therein one or more first populations of semiconductor nanocrystals, each first population having a distinct characteristic first spectral emission;
providing a second library of one or more member molecules, wherein each member of said second library is attached to a second support having attached thereto or embedded therein one or more second populations of semiconductor nanocrystals, each second population having a distinct characteristic second spectral emission, and wherein the second spectral emission is distinct from the first spectral emission;
contacting said first library of molecules with said second library of molecules observing the first and second spectral emissions, wherein said first and second spectral emissions provide information about which of the molecules from the second library of molecules are associated with said first library of molecules, and provides information about the identity of the molecule from said first library of molecules.
29. The method of claim 28, wherein the first library of molecules and the second library of molecules are both proteins, oligonucleotides or sugar moieties.
30. The method of claim 28, wherein the first support is a first bead and second support is a second bead.
