Abstract

ABSTRACT
A cartridge for a caulking gun or the like comprises, a unitary plastic body having a tubular side wall and an end wall defining a cylindrical storage chamber and a discharge nipple projecting from the end wall. The discharge nipple has a side face extending longitudinally thereof in which a locking ridge is formed.
A nozzle having a discharge cavity opening inwardly from one end thereof is also provided. A portion of the discharge cavity at one end of the nozzle forms a socket which is proportioned to receive the discharge nipple. The socket has an inner side wall in wich a mounting groove is formed adjacent said one end. The mounting groove is adapted to receive said locking ridge in a close fitting sealing relationship thereby to releaseably retain the nozzle on the nipple and form a peripherally extending seal in interface therebetween which serves to prevent the escape of fluid between the side face of the nipple and the inner side wall of the nozzle. The sealing interface is sufficiently flexible to permit the ridge to snap into and out of the groove in response to axial movement of the nipple with respect to the socket. A flange projects laterally outwardly from the nozzle at said one end thereof so as to be engageable by a retaining wall of the caulking gun in use. A plunger is slidably mounted in the cylinder or in the cylindrical storage chamber.

Description

:~3~ 3 This invention relates to a cartridge for a caulking gun or the like. In particular, this invention relates to improvemen-ts in the moun-ting of a removable nozzle.
PRIOR ART
When a cartrige for a caulking gun is made from a unitary body of plastic material or the like, the nozzle is made separately and is connected to the cartridge by means of a nipple which is formed at the discharge end of the cartridge. Previously, the nozzle has either been connected by providing an interference fit between the nipple and the nozzle or by threading the nipple and nozzle with a conventional single start thread.
When an interference fit is used, the nozzles tend -to become separated from the container in use. The user frequently holds the cartridge assembly by the nozzle when attempting to mount the cartridge in a caulking gun and an interference fit is frequently inadequate to retain the nipple within the nozzle. If the interference fit is a very tight fit, considerably difficulty can be experienced in attempting to remove the nozzle. This problem is further complicated in practice by reason of the fact that the nozzle and cartridge frequently become smeared with the caulking compound which makes it difficult for the user to firmly engage the nozzle to remove it from the cartridge.
While the use of a conventional thread serves to secure the nozzle with respect to the nipple, the difficulty is still experienced in attempting to remove the nozzle.

As previously discussed, the nozzle becomes smeared with the caulking compound and becomes difficul-t to grasp. This problem is further compounded by the fact that the user frequently wears rather heavy industrial clothes which make the grasping of -the nozzle more difficult. Thus, when it is necessary for the user to rota-te the nozzle several times before it is removed from the nipple, the user's find it difficult to remove the nozzle.
Detachable nozzles have a flange at their inner end which is engaged by the tangs of the caulking gun to prevent separation of the nozzle and the nipple during the caulking opera~ion.
After the nozzle has been used, residual caul~ing compound usually remains in the discharge passage of the nozzle and this compound tends to become cured with aging. In order the clean the nozzle, it is necessary for the user to unclog the discharge passage and considerable difficulty is experienced in attempting to unclog this passage.
Some users of cartridges of this type prefer the convenience of a rupturable membrane for use in opening the output end of a cartridge while others prefer an unrestricted opening which may be closed with a plug~
I have found that the difficulties previously experienced in attempting to securely retain and easily mount and remove a nozzle can be overcome by providing a snap action fit by forming a locking ridge on the nipple and a locking groove in the socket of 3~

I have also found that -the diE~icul~ies previously experienced in the mounting of -the nozzle can be overcome by forming a coarse thread connection be-tween the nipple and nozzle which will seat the nozzle on the nipple in response to a rotation of less than 9oo ~
In addition, I have found that the difficulties previously experienced in attempting to remove residual caulking compound from the through passage of -the nozzle can be overcome by forming a detent on a cap on which the nozzle is mounted after use such that a detent becomes embedded in the surplus material so as to be anchored therein such that upon separa-tion oE -the cap and nozzle, the residual material will remain secured to the detent.
I also provide a removable plug for closing the discharge passage of the cartridge which incorporates a rupturable membrane which may be ruptured to permit discharge.
SUMMARY ~F INVENTION
According to one aspect of the present invention~ there is provided a car-tridge for a caulking gun or the like comprising a unitary plastic body having a tubular side wall and an end wall defining a cylindrical storage chamber and a discharge nipple projecting from the end wall, said discharge nipple having a side face e~tending longitudinally thereof, a locking ridge formed on sald side face and extending around said nipple adjacent said end ~ 3 wall, a no~zle having a discharge cavity opening inwardly from one end thereof, a portion of said discharge cavi-ty at said one end and forming a socket which is proportioned to receive said discharge nipple~ said .socket having an inner side wa:L1, a mounting groove in said inner side wall adjacent said one end, said mounting ~roove being adapted to receive said locking ridge in a close fitting sealing relationship thereby to releaseably retain said nozzle on said nipple and form a peripherally extending seal in interface therebetween which serves to prevent the escape of fluid between the side face of the nipple and the inner side wall of the nozzle, said sealing interface being sufficiently flexible to permit said ridge to snap into and out of said groove in response to axial movement of said nipple with respect to said socket, and a flange projecting laterally outwardly from the nozzle at said one end thereof so as to be engageable by a retaining wall of the caulking gun in use, and, a plunger slidably mounted in said cylinder or in said cylindrical storage chamber~
According to a further aspect of the present invention, there is provided a cartridge for a caulking gun or the like comprising a unitary plastic body having a tubular side wall and an end wall defining a cylindrical storage chamber and a discharge nipple projecting from the end wall, said discharge nipple having a side face extending longitudinally thereof, a plurality of coarse male thread elements formed on said side face of said nipple and æ3 extending through less than 90 of rotation, said male thread elements being circumferentially spaced at a substantial distance from one another, a nozzle having a discharge cavity opening inwardly from end thereof, a por-tion of said discharge cavity at said one ~nd forming a socke-t which is proportioned to receive said discharge nipple, said socket having an inner side wall, a plurality o~ coarse female thread grooves formed in said inner side wall of said socket, said female thread grooves being adapted to threadably engage the male thread elements of said nipple, said male and female thread elements being arranged to cause sa:id one end of sa:id nozzle to butt agains-t said end wall of said body in response to rotation of the nozzle in one direc-tion so as to releaseably lock the nozzle on the nipple, and a flange projecting laterally outwardly from the nozzle at said one end so as to be engageable by a retaining wall of the caulking gun in use, a plunger slidably mounted in said cylinder.
According to yet another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a cap adapted to be releaseably mounted on the discharge nipple. The cap has an outer end portion adapted to form a seat for the nozzle and a detent arranged to project into the discharge cavity of the nozzle when the nozzle is mounted on the seat. The detent is adapted to become embedded in any residual compound remaining in the discharge cavity of the nozzle such that upon subsequent removal of the nozzle from the seat, the residual ~3~3 compound will be retained by the cap tnereby cleaning the discharge cavity of -the nozzle for reuse.

The invention will be more clearly understood after reference to the following detailed specification read in con~unction with the drawings wherein:
Figure l is a longi-tudinal section taken through a cartridge and nozzle constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a partially sectioned side view of a cartridge and nozzle cons-tructed in accordance with a further embodiment of the present in~ention;
Figure 3 is a side view of a portion of a cartridge constructed in accordance with yet another embodiment of the present invention; and, Figure 4 is a longitudinal section taken through the discharge nipple of a cartridge which has a removable closure plug which incorporates a rupturable membrane.
With reference to Figure l of the drawings, the reference numeral lO refers generally to a cartridge cons-tructed in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention and the reference numeral 12 refers generally to a nozzle constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.

$L~3~ 3 The cartridge 10 comprises a uni-tary body 14 which is preferably made from a plastic material and is formed by an injection molding process. The unitary body 14 comprises a tubular side wall 16 and an end wall 18 which define a cylindrical storage chamber 20. A discharge nipple 22 is formed on and projec-ts from the end wall 18. The nipple ~2 has a cylindrical side face 24 upon which an angular locking ridge 26 i5 formed. The locking ridge 26 is continuous and extends around the side face 24 adjacent the end wall 18.
The discharge nipple 22 has an outer end wall in the form of a membrane 28 which is sufficiently thin so as to be rupturable upon impac-t with a sharp object. A shoulder 30 is formed at the outer end of the nipple 22. The shoulders 30 extends around the perimeter of a shallow indent 32 which serves to provide Eor the alignment of a sharp object with the membrane 8 to facilitate opening of the membrane 28. A narrow severing groove 34 extends about the nozzle 32 inwardly from the membrane 28. By severing the nipple in the plane of the severing groove 34, the membrane 28 may be removed to open discharge passage 20 oE the nipple 22.
A circumferentially extending undercut 31 is formed in the shoulder area of the tubular side wall. This undercut is provided for the purposes of forming a lip 36 which can be engaged by a stripper for stripping the molded product from the core of the mold in which it is formed in use.

The nozzle 12 is preferably made from a unitary body of plastic material and is formed hy an injection mold process~ The nozzle 12 has a discharge cavity 40 opening inwardly from the end 42. The tapered end portion 44 of the nozzle is of a conventional construction which may be cut by a sharp knife at any point along to provide a discharge oriface of varying proportion depending upon the plane in which the cut is made.
The portion 46 which opens inwardly from the end 42 forms a socket which is proportioned to receive the discharge nipple 22 in a close fitting relationship. The socke-t 46 has an inner side wall 48 in which a mounting groove 50 is formed. The mounting groove 50 extends continuously about -the circumEerence of the socket and is located adjacent the end 42 of the nozzle 12. A shoulder 52 is located at the inner end of the socket 46 and is spaced Erom the groove 50 so as to bear against the inner end face 30 of the nipple when the nipple is seated in the socket with the locking ridge 26 mounted in the mounting groove 50.
The nozzle 12 also has an angular flange 54 projecting laterally outwardly from the end 42.
A plunger 60 is slidable within the chamber 20 so as to be moveable toward the end wall 18 to discharge the content of the chamber 20 through -the nipple and nozzle in use. The outer circumference of the plunger 60 is formed with a plurality of circumerentially extending ridges 62 which serves to seal against the inner face of the chamber 20. The ridges 62 are preferably of a sawtooth construction increasing gradually in diameter from the leading end of the plunger toward the back end of the plunger decreasing sharply to the leading end of the next ridge.
In use, it is barely necessary to insert the nipple 22 into the socket 46 to move the nipple longitudinally of the socket until the locking ridge 26 snaps into the mountiny gr~ove 50. The nozzle and the unitary plastic body are proportioned so as to be sufficiently flexible to permit the locking ridge 26 to enter the socket and to cause the mounting groove 50 to close tightly abou-t the locking ridge 26 when it is snaps into mating engagement with the ridge 26. To remove the nozzle, it is merely necessary to pull the nozzle away from the unitary body.
It is to be noted that i-t is not necessary to provide an interlock between the nozzle and the nipple which is sufficient to resist -the pressure within the cartrige in use because the Elange 54 of the nozzle is engaged by the tangs of the caulking gun and thus the caulking gun serves to prevent the nozzle from becoming separated from the body during the caulking operation.
Figure 2 of the drawings illustrates a Eurther embodiment of the present invention in which the unitary plastic bod~ 14 is identical to that previously described in Figure 1 of the drawings and the nozzle 12 is identical to that described in Figure 1 of the drawings. :[n this embodiment, however, a cap 70 is moun-ted on -the nipple 22. The cap 70 has a socket 46a which is construc-ted in a manner similar to the socket 46 of the nozzle so that it will snap ~æ3~

onto the nipple 22 as previously described. The cap 70 also has an outer end portion 72 which is shaped to provide a locking ridge 26a and a support shoulder 30a onto which the nozzle 12 may be mounted such that the mounting groove 50 engages the locking ridge ~6a to secure the noæzle in the same manner in which the nozzle is secured with respect to the nipple 22 in the embodiment described in Figure 1. The cap 70 also has a detent 74 projecting laterally from one end thereof. The detent 74 i5 in the form of a cone shaped projection which has an angular groove 76 extending inwardly about the base thereof.
In this embodiment the nozzle 12 is preferably integrally connected to the cap 70 by means of a strap 78 which is sufficiently flexible to permit the nozzle 12 to be seated on the cap without severing the strap 78.
In use, the cap 70 is removed to expose the membranes 28.
The membrane 28 is then broken and the nozzle 12 is moun-ted on the nipple 22 as previously described. The nozzle 12 is cut along a suitable plane such as the plane 81 to provide a discharge oriface of the required proportions. ~he required amount of material is then expelled -through the nozzle. Thereafter, the nozzle is removed by snapping it off a previously described and the cap 70 is relocated on the nipple 22. The nozzle 12 is then seated on the cap 70 by inserting the end of the cap into -the socket 46 until the locking ridge 26a is seated in the mounting groove 50. This results ~2~ 3 in the detent 74 becoming embedded in the body of -the material which is lodged in the socket 46. This material will also Elow into the undercut 76. When this residual material sets, the detent 7~ will become securely anchored to -this body of material and upon removal of the nozzle 12 from the cap 70, the residual material will remain secured to the detent 74 and will be withdrawn from the nozzle 12 so as to clear the discharge passage in the nozzle for further use. It will be appreciated that in some ins-tances, the entire body of residual material may not be removed, however, in most instances, a major portion of the residual material will be removed making subsequent clearing of the nozzle considerably simpler than that previously experienced.
A further embodiment of the present invention is illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings wherein the locking ridge of the nipple and the mounting groove of the nozzle are replacecl by coarse male thread element~ 80 and female thread grooves 82 respectively. The threads 80 and grooves 82 have three starts which are spaced 120 from one another and extend through an arc of 60. In use, the nozzle 84 can be positioned on the nipple 86and by rotating the nozzle through 60 it's free end 88 will be wedged against the shoulder 90 of the end wall 18.
To remove this nozzle, it is merely necessary to rotate the nozzle through 60 in the opposite direction. It will be noted that the flange 54 is again provided on the nozzle so that the nozzle may be retained by means of the tangs of the caulking gun.

Yet another embodimen-t is illustrated ln Figure ~ of the drawings in which nipple 92 has an open end in which a plug 96 is moun-ted. The plug 96 is formed with a plurality of circumEerentially e~tending ridges 94 on its outer face which serve to retain it within the nipple 92 in use. The plug 96 has a recess 98 which extends to a rupturable membrane 100. A shoulder 102 is formed on the plug 9G and a head portion 10~ projects radially outwardly from the shoulder 102. When the shoulder 102 bears against this outer end of the nipple 92 a gap 106 is provided between the head and the outer end 108 of the nipple. In use the user may insert any suitable prying device between the head 104 and the outer end 108 of the nipple to remove the plug 96.
Alternatively the membrane 100 may be ruptured to permit the contents to be discharged through the nipple.
From the Eoregoing it will be apparent that the present invention provides a simple and inexpensive cartridge for a caulking gun in which the nozzle and/or closure plug can be mounted and removed with ease.

Claims (13)

The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows.
1. A cartridge for a caulking gun or the like comprising:
a) a unitary plastic body having a tubular side wall and an end wall defining a cylindrical storage chamber and a discharge nipple projecting from the end wall, said discharge nipple having a side face extending longitudinally thereof, a locking ridge formed on said side face and extending around said nipple adjacent said end wall, b) a nozzle having a discharge cavity opening inwardly from one end thereof, a portion of said discharge cavity at said one end and forming a socket which is proportioned to receive said discharge nipple, said socket having an inner side wall, a mounting groove in said inner side wall adjacent said one end, said mounting groove being adapted to receive said locking ridge in a close fitting sealing relationship thereby to releaseably retain said nozzle on said nipple and form a peripherally extending seal in interface therebetween which serves to prevent the escape of fluid between the side face of the nipple and the inner side wall of the nozzle, said sealing interface being sufficiently flexible to permit said ridge to snap into and out of said groove in response to axial movement of said nipple with respect to said socket, and a flange projecting laterally outwardly from the nozzle at said one end thereof so as to be engageable by a retaining wall of the caulking gun in use, and, c) a plunger slidably mounted in said cylinder or in said cylindrical storage chamber.
2. A cartridge as claimed in claim 1 wherein said discharge nipple has an outer end wall in the form of a rupturable membrane which has an outer face in which an alignment indent is formed.
3. A cartridge as claimed in claim 2 wherein said discharge nozzle is formed with a severing groove extending about the perimeter of the side face inwardly from said membrane.
4. A cartridge as claimed in claim 1 further comprising a cap adapted to be releaseably mounted on said discharge nipple, said cap having an outer end portion adapted to form a seat for said nozzle and a detent arranged to project into said discharge cavity of said nozzle when said nozzle is mounted on said seat, said detent being adapted to become embedded in any residual compound remaining in said discharge cavity of said nozzle such that upon subsequent removal or the nozzle from said seat, the residual compound will be retained by said cap thereby clearing said discharge cavity of said nozzle for reuse.
5. A cartridge as claimed in claim 4 wherein a detent is in the form of a conical head having a circumferentially extending undercut.
6. A cartridge as claimed in claim 4 wherein the nozzle is attached to the cap by means of a flexible strap which has a sufficient length to permit the cap to be seated on and released from the cap as required in use.
7. A cartridge for a caulking gun or the like comprising:
a) a unitary plastic body having a tubular side wall and an end wall defining a cylindrical storage chamber and a discharge nipple projecting from the end wall, said discharge nipple having a side face extending longitudinally thereof, a plurality of coarse male thread elements formed on said side face of said nipple and extending through less than 90° of rotation, said male thread elements being circumferentially spaced at a substantial distance from one another, b) a nozzle having a discharge cavity opening inwardly from end thereof, a portion of said discharge cavity at said one end forming a socket which is proportioned to receive said discharge nipple, said socket having an inner side wall, a plurality of coarse female thread grooves formed in said inner side wall of said socket, said female thread grooves being adapted to threadably engage the male thread elements of said nipple, said male and female thread elements being arranged to cause said one end of said nozzle to butt against said end wall of said body in response to rotation of the nozzle in one direction so as to releaseably lock the nozzle on the nipple, and a flange projecting laterally outwardly from the nozzle at said one end so as to be engageable by a retaining wall of the caulking gun in use, c) a plunger slidably mounted in said cylinder.
8. A cartridge as claimed in claim 7 wherein said discharge nipple has an outer end wall in the form of a rupturable membrane which has an outer face in which an alignment indent is formed.
9. A cartridge as claimed in claim 8 wherein said discharge nozzle is formed with a severing groove extending about the perimeter of the side face inwardly from said membrane.
10. A cartridge as claimed in claim 7 further comprising a cap adapted to be releaseably mounted on said diseharge nipple, said cap having an outer end portion adapted to form a seat for said nozzle and a detent arranged to project into said discharge cavity of said nozzle when said nozzle is mounted on said seat, said detent being adapted to become embedded in any residual compound remaining in said discharge cavity of said nozzle such that upon subsequent removal of the nozzle from said seat, the residual compound will be retained by said cap thereby clearing said discharge cavity of said nozzle for reuse.
11. A cartridge as claimed in claim 9 wherein a detent is in the form of a conical head having a circumferentially extending undercut.
12. A cartridge as claimed in claim 9 wherein the nozzle is attached to the cap by means of a flexible strap which has a sufficient length to permit the cap to be seated on and released from the cap as required in use.
13. A cartridge for a caulking gun comprising;
a) a unitary plastie body having a nipple through which a discharge passage opens, b) a plug removably mounted in said discharge passager said plug baving a rupturable membrane closing said discharge passage and a prying groove formed between said plug and said nipple into which a prying tool may be inserted to remove said plug as required in use.
