Abstract

An apparatus for the manufacture of plastic bags from a flattened, tubular strip movable in the direction of production which comprises at least one roller, at least one output roller, a cutting apparatus and a transverse bag welding apparatus, wherein the cutting apparatus is structured and positioned so as to produce a wavelike cut in the strip running in the production direction, the wavelike cut defining two half strips which have complementary upper hand grips. Between the cutting apparatus and the transverse bag welding apparatus a detour apparatus is positioned which causes a phase shift in the half strips with respect to the wavelike cut and positions bag hand grips from opposing half strips over one another. The phase shifted half strips are jointly inputted into the transverse bag welding apparatus. The cutting apparatus has a cutting knife as well as a cutting knife control roller with cutting knife control thereon. The cutting knife is held in a cutting groove, that is, inputted over the grooved guide in which the cutting groove is positioned, the cutting groove having a width conforming to the amplitude of the wavelike cut previously mentioned. The control roller is positioned between two fixed support elements substantially before and above the cutting groove. The support elements carry a guide bar on which a cutting knife carriage is slidably mounted, and carries on one side a control pin which engages the cutting knife control groove and on the other side supports the cutting knife.

Description

SS3~3 Our prssent invention relatss to an apparatus or machSne for makin~
plastic bags.
The manufacture of plastic bags fro~ a flattened, tubular strip movable in a production direction with a macbine havin~ input rollers, output rollers, a cutting device and a transverse ba8 welaing dsvice is known.
The cutting device can be structurea ana positioned so as to produce a wavelike cut in the flattened, tubular strip runninS in the production direction. This wavelike cut can define two half strips which have complementary upper hand ~rips.
Between the cuttin~ device and the transverse ba~-weldin~ device a detour device is positioned which causes a phase shift in the half strips with respect to the wavelike cut when one of the half strips is passed therethrough.
The detour apparatus thus positions the ba~ han~ grips over one another. The phase-shifted half strips are ~ointly fea lnto the transverse bag-weldin~ apparatus to close the sides of the plastic ba~s. The cuttin~
apparatus has a knife as well as a knife control roller witb the cuttin~ knife ~roove therein and the cutting knife is held in a cuttin~ ~roove over which the flattened, tubular strip is fed.
In such, apparatus, e.g. as described in German Patent DE-OS 30 04 220, the flattened tubular strip is fed over a roller which extends across the entire wiath of the tubular strip.
The strip is typically synchronizea with the roller systems and bears a cut or inci6ion which when examined appears more or less sinusoidal. These rollers so to speak bracket either side of the tubular strip.
The cutting knife control roller is constructea to come near those rollers, carries the knife control groove and holds a conformin8 structure in the knife groove.
All possible effort is expended so the cutting knife control ~roove and the knife cuttin~ groove are formed with 8reat precision so that on operation the cut previously mentioned is satisfactory and results are free from chatter marks and the like. On account of, for example, the stackin~ of the manufacturea plastic bags the feed of the strip is interruptea by frequent unavoidable idle periods so that a basic inertia problem arises on renewed runnin~.

L

1~5~3~3 It is thus posslble that the cut in the str~p will not be uniform with renewed running but will show an almost contlnuous set of faults.
The ob~ect of the inventlon is to simplify this kind of apparatus from a mechanical point of view and, at the same time, to improve its operation.
This object is attained in accordance with the invent~on in that the flattened tubular strip is inputted or fed over a solid grooved guide in which a cut ~roove is positloned which has a width substantially equal to the amplitude of the previously mentioned wavelike cut.
The cutting knlfe control roller is positloned between solid support elements near and before and/or over the cutting groove.
The supporting elements support a guide rod, and a knife carriage is slidably mounted on the guide rod, the knife carriage having on one side a control pin bound thereto which engages the cutting knife control apparatus and on the other side the cutting knife.
According to the preferred embodiment of the invention the control roller has a drive which is operated as a cyclic drive and works permanently, while the operation of the input and output rollers is haltable during the idle period of the machine's function. With the input and output rollers halted the grooved guide is lowerable so as to free the working cutting knife from the strip. This avoids the previously dQscribed stored inertia that can occur in the prior art apparatuses during start up after an idle period. For purposes of ad~ustment of the cuttin~ actlon on the transport of the strip, the grooved guide and the control roller (the latter with the help of the cyclic drive) are mounted in a stand which is slidable back and forth in the motion direction of the str~p.
An advantage of these structures is that the apparatus according to the invention is noticeably simplified in regard to its mechanical structure.
This simplification can be seen in that in the apparatus of the invention a driven feed roller having a cutting knife control groove and a cutting groove on opposite sides is no longer necessary. The strip will be fed over a grooved guide which is raisable and lowerable but is however otherwise fixed and nonrotatable. Consequently the cutting knife control roller will be continually driven and the inertia problem will no longer exist after an idle period of the apparatus.

i-~ l ~25S38 The invention will now be descrlbed witb reference to the accompanying schematic drawing in which:
FIG. 1 is a top plan view of the apparatus according to the invention;
FIG. 2 is a side view of the embodiment shown in FIG. l;
FIG. 3 in contrast to FIG. 1 and FIG. 2, is an essentially larger-scale sectional view along the line III-III through the apparatus according to FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a top plan view of the apparatus accordin~ to FIG. 3; and FIG. S is a partially-sectional side view of tbe apparatus of FIG. 3.
The apparatus shown in the drawing is for the manufacture of plastic bags from a flattened tubular strip 30 movable continuously or intermittently in the production direction. The tubular strip can be provlded with a bottom fold on the margin of lts long edge. The following basic construction is used for the apparatus: Input feed rollers 1 output feed rollers 2; a cutt~ng apparatus 3 and a transverse welding apparatus 4.
The cutting apparatus 3 is structured and positioned so as to run longitudinally to the productlon direction to produce a wavelike cut 5 of amplitude A as shown in Fig. 1. One further concludes by examination of Fig.
1 that the cut 5 complements upper bag hand grips 6 and that the resulting half strips 31 and 32 are defined by the incision 5.
Between the cutting apparatus 3 on the one side and the transverse bag welding apparatus 4 on the other side one flnds a detour apparatus 7 which causes a phase shift between the running half strips 31 and 32 with respect to the wavelike cut 5.
The phase shift is such that the hand grlps 6 are positioned above one another as shown in Fig. 1.
The detour apparatus 7 works with guide rollers 8, 9, and 10 to cause a U-shaped detour in the course of one of the half strips 31 and 32. The ~-shift in the path introduces the phase shift by an ad~ustable upward and - 30 downward positioning of the aforementioned guide roller 8. The phase-shifted half strips 31 and 32 are then introduced ~ointly to the transverse bag welding apparatus 4.
Particularly one sees from a comparative consideration of Figs. 3 to 5 that the strip 30 is inputted over a grooved guide 11 in which is positloned a ~ - 3 -3~3 cutting groove 12 of a width that conforms to the height of the amplitude A of the wavelike cut 5.
A cutting knife control roller 13 is found between stationary support elements 14 in position before or, as in the example, above the cutting groove 12. The support elements 14 support the guide bar 15. On the guide bar 15 a cutting knife carriage 16 is slidably mounted having on ona side a conSrol pin 17 bound thereto and engaging a cutting knife control ~roove 18 in control roller 13 and on the other side carrying the cutting knife 19.
The control roller 13 engages a cutting knife drive (not shown) which works continuously and which engages the drive shaft 20 of the control roller 13, although the input rollers 1 and the output rollers 2 are totally stopped during the idle period of the apparatus.
The grooved guide 11 is lowerable, when the input and output rollers 1 and 2 respectively are halted by means of the cylinder piston 21. In this lowered configuration the strip 30 is disengageable from the working cutting knife 19.
The double arrows indicate in Fig. S that the grooved guide 11 and the control roller 13 are positioned in support case 22 so as to be slidable back and forth in the direction of the motion of the strip.
