TORONTO (Reuters) - Canada's main stock index rose to a fresh nine-month high on Thursday as mining stocks rallied, while stronger-than-expected earnings from the country's biggest bank by market value helped financials edge higher.
Higher U.S. earnings also helped bottom lines of TD, Royal Bank; soured energy loans weighed on BMO's second-quarter results. TD's iconic towers on Bay St. in Toronto, flanked by the other major banks.
CIBC saw its second-quarter profit grow to $941 million, up 3.3 per cent from the same period last year despite an increase in provisions for soured loans to the oil and gas sector and writeoffs in its personal lending portfolios.
It is difficult trying to discern what Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz really thinks about the exchange rate. Officially, he is agnostic.
