Unfortunately, the Massachusetts Department of Correction (DOC) doesn't have to go looking for trouble or for business. Laws do get broken and the safety of citizens threatened. Convicted offenders are placed into the custody of the state agency. The Massachusetts DOC maintains 8 correctional facilities, providing pre-release to minimum, medium, and maximum security, as well as offender substance abuse and mental health care. With an annual budget of roughly $549 million, the agency employs about 5,000 personnel and is responsible for the housing of approximately 11,000 inmates. In addition to incarceration, the agency offers rehabilitation and job training services.
