Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern Railroad (DM&E), one of the largest regional railroads in the US, operates about 1,100 miles of track in South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wyoming, and Nebraska. Sister company Iowa, Chicago & Eastern Railroad (IC&E), with 1,400 miles of line in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin, was consolidated into the DM&E in 2008. The railroad transports a variety of goods, including coal, grain products (including ethanol), and steel. Rival Canadian Pacific Railway acquired DM&E and IC&E in 2007 for $1.5 billion. (After review, the US Surface Transportation Board approved the deal in late 2008.)
