Itaipu Binacional is more than a dam or even power plant. The project encompasses the Itaipu Dam and Hydroelectric Power Plant as well as Itaipu Lake and resulting environs. Built on the Paran River (which serves as the border between Brazil and Paraguay) Itaipu Binacional serves both countries by providing electricity through the Itaipu Hydroelectric Power Plant. Developed jointly by Brazil and Paraguay, Itaipu Binacional, boasts an installed power capacity of 14,000 MW from 20 generating units. The Itaipu dam was completed in 1982, forming Itaipu lake; the power plant began generating electricity in 1984.
