Independent liberal arts institution Claflin University offers undergraduate degree programs, select graduate programs, internships, and other career-focused and continuing education programs to students from some 25 states and over 15 countries. Enrollment is about 1,800, with a student/faculty ratio of 12-to-1. About 96% of the students receive tuition and financial assistance. It is South Carolina's oldest historically black college or university, tracing its roots to 1866 and its founding to 1869. (The university awarded its first bachelor's degree in 1882.) Claflin University is affiliated with the United Methodist Church.
