Southern Connecticut Gas brings energy to the Constitution State. Founded in 1847, the subsidiary of New England-based utility UIL Holdings provides natural gas services to 165,000 customers in 22 cities and towns in a 560 sq. mi. service area of Fairfield, New Haven, and Middlesex counties, primarily along the shores of Long Island Sound. The company's customer base represents approximately 25% of Connecticut's residents. In 2010, in order to raise capital, former parent Iberdrola USA sold the company to UIL Holdings. The sale was part of a $1.3 billion, three-utility deal to grow UIL Holdings' market position and give it an entry into gas distribution.
