Born Free USA (formerly Animal Protection Institute) advocates the protection of animals from exploitation and cruelty. The not-for-profit group employs public education, governmental lobbying, litigation, and grassroots organizing to prevent the keeping of exotic pets, protect animals used in entertainment, control the international wildlife trade, and abolish trapping and the use of fur in fashion. Its primate sanctuary in Texas cares for animals rescued from labs, roadside zoos, and private ownership. Founded in 1968, API merged with Born Free USA (the US arm of the UK's Born Free Foundation, formed by the stars of the film Born Free) to form Born Free USA United with Animal Protection Institute in 2007.
