Black Press Group is a leading international newspaper publisher with about 150 papers in Canada and the US. Its Canadian portfolio includes many smaller papers in British Columbia and Alberta, including several community newspapers serving markets around Vancouver and Victoria. In the US, Black Press owns a cache of community papers in the Seattle market and other parts of Washington through subsidiary Sound Publishing, while its Beacon Journal Publishing unit operates The Akron Beacon Journal in Ohio. Black Press also owns the Star-Advertiser in Honolulu. The company is controlled by CEO David Black and his family; Toronto Star publisher Torstar has a 20% stake in Black Press.
