Not your typical town crier, this publisher gives voice to issues underplayed in the mainstream press. Village Voice Media Holdings publishes more than a dozen free alternative weekly newspapers, anchored by its flagship New York City paper The Village Voice. Other titles include the City Pages (Minneapolis), the Dallas Observer, and SF Weekly (San Francisco). Village Voice Media also operates websites for its publications and sells advertising space for other alternative papers and websites. Formerly New Times Newspapers, the firm was started in 1970 by Arizona State University students opposed to the Vietnam war. It has agreed to sell its newspaper holdings to a new Denver-based venture, Voice Media Group.
