The Florida Department of State's mission is promoting the state's historical and cultural heritage by supporting local library systems; ensuring fair and accurate elections; promoting cultural events; issuing corporate charters; and recording financial information. The department is headed by the Florida's secretary of state who also serves as the state's chief election officer and chief cultural officer; its historical resources division head is Florida's state historic preservation officer. The Florida Department of State was established in 1838.
