When the moose is loose and gets struck by a truck in Alaska, the Alaska Department of Public Safety responds. Alaska's DPS is the primary law enforcement and public safety agency for the largest of the 50 states. It includes the Division of Alaska State Troopers, which handles statewide law enforcement, crime prevention, offender pursuit and apprehension, prisoner transportation, and search and rescue efforts. Its Division of Wildlife Troopers protects Alaska's natural resources, while the Division of Fire and Life Safety protects against the loss of life and property from fires and explosions. The agency also runs the Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory and the Criminal Records and Identification Bureau.
