This society has built a business catering to its animals. The San Antonio Zoological Society, a not-for-profit, operates the San Antonio Zoo, as well as the zoo's wide variety of exhibits. Its exhibits range from an African watering hole with multiple animal species to the Hixon Bird House to Prairie Chickens, Prairie Dogs, and TOADally. The zoo extends throughout a 56-acre site in San Antonio's centrally located Brackenridge Park. The San Antonio Zoo is home to some 3,500 animals, representing about 750 species. The zoo was established in 1914. Several years later, in 1929, the governing zoological society was incorporated as a business entity.
