Now it's focusing on the corner market. eMusic is one of the oldest digital music subscription services in operation, allowing consumers to download music legally. However, after business suffered as customers turned to newer services from Apple and RealNetworks, eMusic repositioned itself as "the Internet's corner music store", providing music from independent labels, as well as editorial content and social networking services geared toward music lovers. Former chairman Bob Kohn and ex-CEO Gene Hoffman founded eMusic in 1998. The company is owned by Dimensional Associates, the private equity arm of JDS Capital Management.
