Five justices sit on the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, a court of last resort that supervises the state's judiciary system. Sixty-five judges preside over the 31 circuits of the state's Circuit Court, which hears cases of general jurisdiction, such as civil cases for sums of more than $300, felonies and misdemeanors, and juvenile matters. Of more limited jurisdiction is Family Court, composed of 35 judges in 26 circuits. Family Court hears such family-related matters as divorce and child custody. Also in the system are 158 magistrates in 55 counties who hear civil cases under $5,000, felony preliminary hearings, misdemeanors, and other matters.
