Scribd democratizes the written word online. The company runs a social publishing Web site geared towards professional, up-and-coming, and wannabe writers looking to share their original works with the public. Everything from novels and screenplays to recipes and sheet music can be uploaded using Scribd's iPaper document reader, which converts PDF, Word, and PowerPoint files into Web documents. Launched in 2007, Scribd boasts about 60 million readers per month and writings displayed in more than 90 different languages. Authors can also sell their documents through Scribd's copyright-protected online store. Publishing house Simon & Schuster sells roughly 5,000 of its titles through Scribd.com.
