Proof that Illinoisans have been born, married, in the military, divorced, and have died is all housed in the Illinois State Archives. The archives' building in Springfield houses records created by state and federal agencies such as censuses and military documents. It's also home to a collection of documents written in Abraham Lincoln's hand. The Illinois Regional Archives Depository (IRAD) houses records created by county, city, town, village, and township governmental agencies such as deeds, wills, and marriage licenses. IRAD has seven sites on university campuses around the state. The archives' records management section assists state and local government agencies with record disposal.
