The college may be in Old Westbury, but its primary mission is to educate young Long Islanders and other New Yorkers. Founded in 1965 by the SUNY trustees, The College at Old Westbury began operations in 1968 at the Planting Fields Arboretum in nearby Oyster Bay, then moved to the 604-acre North Shore estate of F.Ambrose Clark in 1971. From 571 students in the early 1970s, Old Westbury's enrollment has risen to around 3,300 students today. The college offers 45 undergraduate degrees in the arts, business, and science, and confers a master's degrees in accounting.
