Among the nation's top education lenders, The Student Loan Corporation primarily offered loans under the Federal Family Education Loan Progam (or FFELP) -- that is, until 2010, when federal regulation banned private firms from making federal student loans. Through CitiAssist, the company also offered loans to students who didn't qualify for government loans or sought additional aid beyond the amount provided under FFELP. In light of major changes in the student loan industry, the company and 80%-owner Citigroup sold off its assets.
