The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) is tasked with protecting the Heart of Dixie from disease. ADPH offers a variety of health care services, including cancer screening for women and nursing for HIV patients, through county health departments. The department also provides environmental services, such as testing water for cleanliness to prevent the spread of diseases. Other department functions include keeping birth, death, marriage, and divorce records, as well as health statistics. The state's Children's Health Insurance Program is adminstered by ADPH. It is one of many programs the department offers to promote access to health care for Alabamans. The ADPH has an annual budget of about $700 million.
