The U.S. stock market marched higher Tuesday, giving the Standard & Poor's 500 index its best day of the year. Investors rallied behind an encouraging report on the Chinese economy as well as strong quarterly results from Apple and other big companies.
Stocks ended a wild day mostly lower Wednesday as indexes recovered much of an early plunge. Investors dumped risky assets in heavy trading and parked their money in investments seen as relatively safe, such as U.S.
The Dow Jones industrial average finished the day down over 115 points, turning negative for 2014. The decline comes one day after the blue-chip Dow index plummeted 335 points in its worst day of trading since June 2013.
